Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to attain and sustain an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. Frequent ED may be a symptom of health problems including heart disease, obesity, alcoholism, stress, smoking, and depression, that need treatment. This study aimed to effect of complex extract (CPL) including Cornus officinalis on sexual function factor in the erectile dysfunction rat model. The erectile dysfuction rat model was induced by cimetidine (500 mg/kg in 5% ethanol, oral injection 2 weeks). Rats were oral administered with different concentration of CPL in rat erectile dysfunction model. As a results, sexual function factors (NO, cGMP) significantly improved in CPL treated groups (CPL-300, 600, 900 mg/kg) compared to CON group. Serum testosterone was increased in a dose-dependent manner after CPL treatment. Furthermore, administrations of CPL restored lumen areas of the prostate in the erectile dysfunction rat model. These results indicated that CPL alleviated erectile dysfunction by increasing sexual function factor and testosterone in rat model. CPL could be used to natural treatement for erectile dysfunction. However, further study is required to identify active ingredient and its mechanism of erectile dysfunction.
The abilities of petroleum ether-extracts prepared from 75 plants to inhibit tyrosinase activity were evaluated in reverse micelles composed of isooctane/AOT(100 mM)/phosphate buffer(20 mM, pH 8.0) containing tyrosinase(105.3 units/mL) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine(0.18 mM). Compared with control which has no plant extracts, garlic could completely inhibit in vitro melanogenesis by tyrosinase, and Chinese quince, sweet potato, onion, radish bud and apple did more than 60%. Lipophilic extracts of medicinal plants and herbs such as rosemary, coriander, cinnamomi ramulus, crataegii fructus, ramulus biotae folium, mume fructus, menthae herba, eucommiae cortex and clove also inhibited tyrosinase activity more than 60%. When the extraction yield of lipophilic materials was considered together with their inhibition effect on tyrosinase, it was possible to select plants of which tyrosinase inhibitors could be produced in high quantity from unit weight. Using reverse micelles, the analysis of the capacity of lipophilic materials to inhibit tyrosinase activity which was difficult up to present could be possible.

To develop sustainable new natural anti-aging ingredients from Korean native plants, we investigated the cultivation potential of Nymphoides indica using the eco-friendly aquaponics system, and tested the anti-aging effects from N. indica extracts. N. indica could be grown in aquaponics system using floating leaved deep water culture method, and propagated through rhizome propagation. It was confirmed that the nitrate ($80{\mu}g/mL$), potassium ($63.5{\mu}g/mL$) and water temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) greatly affected the cultivation of the N. indica. In addition, synergistic effects were found when two major components (3,7-di-O-methylquercetin-4'-O-${\beta}$-glucoside & sweroside) were present at more than about $5{\mu}g/mL$. The extract had a significant effect on the recovery of skin cells damaged by environmental pollutant such as $benzo[{\alpha}]pyrene$, ammonium nitrate, formaldehyde. It also suppressed $PGE_2$, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and COX-2, and inhibited the production of MMP-1. Taken together, the results suggested that the standardized extracts of N. indica cultivated in the aquaponics has considerable potential as a new cosmetics ingredient with an anti-aging effect.
The purpose of this study was to determine antioxidant and physiological activities of water and 70% ethanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri by extraction methods. The yield of water and ethanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri was 15.23% and 17.45%, respectively. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri (LEE) were $17.17{\pm}4.38mg/g$, $35.06{\pm}6.69mg/g$, respectively. The electron donating ability and SOD like activity, and ABTS radical ability of all Ligularia fischeri extracts were increased in a dose dependent manner, and those was the highest in LEE. Nitrite scavenging ability was higher in pH 1.2 than that in pH 3.0, and ethanol extract showed higher ability in pH 1.2 and 3.0. The xanthine oxidase and inhibition effect of all Ligularia fischeri extracts on tyrosinase were dose-dependently increased, and those was the highest in ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri. Reducing power was 1.2 at extract concentration $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ in water and ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri and the highest in water extract of Ligularia fischeri at concentration of $62.5-500{\mu}g/mL$. These results may contribute to development of processed food and health functional food with Ligularia fischeri.
Dental caries suppression effect of herb extracts were measured in comparison with sucrose. The result of susceptibility test for dental caries by using Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3065, Streptococcus cricetus KCTC 3292, Streptococcu rattus KCTC 3294, Actinomyces naeslundii KCTC 9013 indicated that Astragalus membranaceus BUNGE was effective than another herbs.
High concentration of antibiotics has been used to treat the outbreak of edwardsiellosis caused by Edwardsiella tarda in aquaculture. However, not all of the bacteria have been killed with high concentrations of antibiotics treatment by the formation of persister cells with a dormant state. The main objective of this study was to kill persister cell using antibiotics with the addition of natural plant compounds. Antibiotics used in this study consist of 100 mg/ml florfenicol and 100 mg/ml amoxicillin. Ten natural plant compounds with persister cell inhibitor activity to E. coli were obtained from Protein Engineering and Systems Biology Lab. of Sungkyunkwan University. The persister cell inhibition activities of those natural plant compounds were evaluated in test tube. Concentrations of the antibiotics were in the ranges of 25~200 ${\mu}g/ml$. The persister cell formation was observed after 16 hours of culture. Persister cells were killed by antibiotics with natural plant compounds. Among ten natural plant compounds, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Mallotus japonicus, and Orixa japonica showed persister cell formation inhibition activities. The optimal concentrations of G. pentaphyllum, M. japonicus, and O. japonica for the inhibitor of persister cell formation were 100 ${\mu}g/ml$, 100 ${\mu}g/ml$, and 200 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In vivo study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the antibiotics with natural plant compounds using aquacultural fish, olive flounder, as test animals. G. pentaphyllum, M. japonicus, and O. japonica of 30 ${\mu}g/ml$, 10 ${\mu}g/ml$, and 10 ${\mu}g/ml$ with antibiotics reduced cumulative mortalities, showing the effectiveness of persister cell inhibition.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of essential oils and ethanolic extracts of approximately 650 plant species on acetylcholine esterase (AChE) enzyme activity using Ellman's colorimetric method in 96-well microplates. The results showed that the ethanolic extracts from twig of Sophora subprostrata, twig of Phellodendron amurense, seed of Corylopsis coreana, and essential oil (EO) from Citrus paradisi, Cupressus sempervirens, Ocimum basilicum, Pinus sylvestris and Rosmarinus officinalis inhibited more than 80% of AChE activity. Among these, EO from Pinus sylvestris, C. sempervirens and C paradisi exhibited higher values of AChE inhibitory activity, which were 75, 84 and 99% at a concentration of 50 ug/ml, respectively. Finally, EO from C paradisi (grapefruit, GEO) showed the highest inhibitory activity towards AChE, which showed 91% of inhibition at a concentration of 20 ug/ml. We also examined the anti-dementia effects of GEO in mouse by passive avoidance test and Morris water maze test. The model mouse (male, ICR) of dementia (negative control) was induced by administration of scopolamine (1 mg/kg body weight). The latency time of sample group administrated with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.) increased significantly as compared with negative control on passive avoidance test. There were significant recovery from the scopolamine-induced deficits on learning and memory in water maze test through daily administrations with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.). From these results, we conclude that GEO treatment might enhance the cognitive function, suggesting that the EO of C. paradis may be a potential candidate for improvement of perceptive ability and dementia.
