  • Recently, consumers using cosmetics have a great interest in raw material safety. Among them, interest in natural preservatives is increasing, and as the demand for cosmetics excluding paraben preservatives increases, a method of replacing synthetic preservatives with antibacterial essential oils is being considered. The antibacterial effect of essential oils depends on the components, concentrations and interactions between the main active compounds. Effective preservatives should have antimicrobial activity against a wide range of strains even at minimal concentrations. All preservatives should be considered to increase skin concentration and cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Consumers recognize that essential oils from nature are safe, but some should be careful because they can cause contact allergies or phototoxic reactions. As such, it is important to balance natural preservatives with maximum preservative effects and low toxicity. This paper describes the characteristics of essential oils focused on antibacterial properties, efficacy and safety as cosmetic preservatives.

  • Natural essential oils showed anti-microbial activity on relatively broad spectrum of bacterial and fungal species. These materials had much more intensive anti-microbial activities than synthetic preservatives on C. albicans, A niger, and P. acnes, especially. In the experimental group, anti-microbial activity was order of tea tree oil (from Melaleuca alternifolia) > methylparaben > phytoncide (from Chamaecyparis obtusa). Also, natural essential oils had anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. These results suggest that natural essential oils can be useful as good cosmetic ingredients such as natural preservatives and anti-oxidants.

  • To evaluate the possibility as a natural preservative of Cornus officinalis seed extracts, we investigated the anti-microbial activity and preservation effect of cosmetics. Cornus officinalis seed extracted with 1,3-Butylene Glycol(1,3-BG) and Ethanol(EtOH). As a result, Cornus officinalis seed extracts showed anti-microbial activity at Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes and Cornus officinalis seed 1,3-BG extracts(COS-A) showed $26.7{\pm}4.0mm$ clear zone at the $1000.0{\mu}l/ml$. Minimum inhibitory concentration of S. epidermidis was observed at Cornus officinalis seed EtOH extracts(COS-B) $25.0{\mu}l/ml$. The result of challenge test for preservation effect on cosmetics, S. aureus and S. epidermidis was 100% eliminated from emulsion containing COS-A and COS-B after 7 days. These results suggest that Cornus officinalis seed extracts may have possibility as the natural preservative instead of synthetic perservative on cosmetics.

  • We investigated the effect of polyethylene glycol(PEG) treatment of preservative treated green japanese cedar(Cryptomeria japonica) round posts on their preservative penetration and check formation during the air drying. The round rods were dip-treated in 10% preservative solution of Basilit CFK for 1 day, followed by application(3, 5, and 10 times) with 50% PEG-400 solution, and then dried for 30 days under natural conditions. The rate of preservative penetration into sapwood was a low by 23.2% without PEG treatment, whereas that was a high by about 51.2~64.5% with PEG treatment. From these results, it was assumed that PEG played an affirmative role in the penetration of preservative components loaded onto the surface of round rods by dipping. During the air drying, the formation of drying checks decreased significantly with increasing application times of PEG. Even though some drying checks in PEG treated rods were developed, the number and size of checks was reduced remarkably by PEG treatment. After 2 months of outdoor exposure, PEG treatment failed to reduce checking in preservative-treated rods whereas finishing of polyurethane resin lacquer after PEG treatment was significantly effective in preventing check development.

  • This study was carried to investigate the efficiency of antimicrobial plant extracts as natural preservative in the cosmetic formulations. Ethanol extracts of different plants were tested using the disc diffusion (paper disc) method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method for their antimicrobial activity against the common poultry pathogens. Terminalia chebula and Rhus japonica (gallut) extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Cinnmomum cassia extract exhibited antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger while the remaining plant extracts showed no activity. A study of the preservative efficacy of the cosmetic formular containing the T. chebula, R. japonica and C. cassia extracts demonstrated sufficient preservative efficacy against bacteria and eukaryotic test microbes. Also, the cosmetic formulations containing antimicrobial plant extracts more effectively inhibited the microoranisms than the mixture of traditional chemical preservatives. These results suggest that the mixture of antimicrobial plant extracts, T. chebula, R. japonica and C. cassia is incorporated as preservative in the cosmetic formulation and the mixture have considerable effect on its efficacy.

  • In order to develop a natural food preservative, Korean plants were extracted with an ethanol and then antimicrobial activity was tested. The antimicrobial activity of the alcohol extract from the sample(Juniperus chinensis, Arundinaria simonii, Pinus densiflora, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis) was so high as to use for a food preservative. It was found that it had the antibacterial effect against a broad spectrum of saprogenous Bacillus sp. such as Bacillus subtilis KCTC 1021. Spraying them to the Ham, it was improved 2 days in its storage period compared to the control.

(Deans and Waterman, 1993).
