Purposes: The objective of this study was to develop a management program for Korean elementary school students suffering from asthma, which would be based on the Australian Asthma-Friendly Schools (AFS) program. Methods: On the basis of the AFS program, we designed a 6-month pilot project for asthmatic students in two elementary schools in a rural area and one elementary school in an urban area of Korea. The pilot project consisted of the following processes: identifying students with asthma in a school, educating school staffs and the parents of an asthmatic child, registering those with asthma, and installing emergency kits for asthma attacks in school health rooms. In order to evaluate these processes, group discussions were held between project team members and school staffs in each area. In addition, we conducted a postal survey of 144 households having an asthmatic child. Results: The screening process adopted in this program resulted in the early diagnosis in asthma; however, it needs to be evaluated economically due to expensive diagnostic test for asthma. For the school nurses, asthma lessons were evaluated as being very helpful for their tasks, while teachers tended to take less interest in the program with only 45% of all teachers attending these lessons. Almost all participating parents reported that such lessons would be beneficial for the care of their child, even though only 24.2% of the survey respondents (122 households) attended the lessons. Installing emergency kits in school health rooms was regarded as a key feature of this project. The introduction of a register card containing more specific health records of asthmatic students was considered necessary to replace the existing list of students with asthma. Conclusion: This study has merit in that a Korean asthma-friendly schools program was developed for the first time, despite the many obstacles to such programs becoming more common.
The aim of this study was to confirm the relationship between asthma and dental caries in Korean children. Using the data of the 2017 The Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC), logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between asthma and dental caries in 331,457 9-year-old children. As a result of this study, asthma was associated with dental caries(unadjusted odds ratio [OR]: 2.75, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.63-2.88). In addition, after all confounders were controled, their association became stronger(adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.65-2.91). Further studies are needed to clearly confirm the relationship between respiratory disease and dental caries and their causal relationship in children.

This study was conducted to identify the preservice teacher's health perception and health promoting behavior, and attitudes towards children with asthma, as well as to examine the relationship between these variables and the influencing factors. The participants were 329 third and fourth grade students from the national university of education in G city. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 23.0. The score for the participants' health perception was 2.85 out of a possible 4, health promoting behavior about 2.49 out of a possible 4, and their score for attitude towards asthma was 3.67 points of a possible 5. The health perception and health promoting behavior showed a positive correlation with the attitudes about child with asthma. Interpersonal relations and health perception and grade had a significant influence on the attitudes about child with asthma. These variables accounted for 12.2% of the attitudes about child with asthma. The results highlight the need for intervention strategies to enhance the health promoting behavior and health perception.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting childhood asthma and atopic dermatitis. Methods: For this study, data for 1,170 children (1-11 years) from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-2, 2011) were analyzed. First correlation matrices were computed to test the normality of every data set and then to be in accordance with the real demographic composition, data were added weight before being analyzed. Results: The child with asthma of a three generation family (OR=3.91, 95% CI [1.33, 11.45], p=.013) compared with a two generation family showed higher asthma development, and maternal asthma (OR=9.71, 95% CI [2.66, 35.40], p=.001) showed higher asthma development in child. The only factor affecting atopic dermatitis was parental perceptions of child health: poor (OR=3.40, 95% CI [1.29, 8.98], p=.014). Conclusion: These results suggest that childhood asthma and atopic dermatitis are both affected by parental perceptions of child health. Accordingly, management and support programs for children who have asthma and/or atopic dermatitis and their families should be comprehensive and also give attention to any other health problems because health perception represents quality of life.
In an attempt to investigate the psycho-social environment of, and to identify contributing factors to asthma, an explorative study was designed. An in-depth interviews of thirteen mothers nth asthmatic children on their child-rearing experiences were carried out from May through October, 1992. Data were gathered and analysed concurrently. The child-rearing experiences were classified into five categories; perceiving the attributes of, perceiving the health status of, affective interactions with, socialization of, and health management of asthmatic children. Thus, a comprehensive approach for the care of asthmatic children, and studies of family on multi-dimensional contributing factors on asthma are strongly recommended.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify knowledge about asthma, attitude to asthma, and empathy for children with asthma as held by university of education students, and to examine the relation between these variables and factors that influence them. Methods: Participants were 347 third and fourth year students from a national university of education in G city. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients, ANOVA and Tukey test with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: The score for participants' knowledge about asthma was 0.53 out of a possible 1, for empathy, 3.63 out of a possible 5, and for attitude towards asthma, 3.33 points of a possible 5. The attitude towards asthma showed significant differences according to year, satisfaction with major, and satisfaction with practice teaching. Knowledge about asthma and empathy showed a positive correlation with attitudes to children with asthma. Year and Knowledge about asthma, and empathy showed a significant influence on attitudes to children with asthma. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that development of appropriate knowledge and empathy in students in a university of education should lead to positive attitudes to children with asthma. This development could be enhanced with structured and on-going education about asthma.

Purpose: Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. It's important mother's caring for management of children with asthma. This study was to provide the evidenced data for preparing an educational program by identifying the knowledge level and educational demand about pediatric asthma of mothers of children with asthma. Method: The subjects were 91 mothers of children with asthma who admitted at 3 hospital in Busan. The data were collected through a self-reporting questionnaire from Feburary to May, 2005. The data was analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program. Results: The total mean percentage of correct answer of knowledge about pediatric asthma was 55.6% and the total mean $score{\pm}SD$ of educational demand about pediatric asthma was $4.40{\pm}0.50$. The knowledge level was statistically different by recurrence number(F=3.08, p=.049). There was not correlation between knowledge level and eucational demand. Conclusions: The mothers of children with asthma had a medium knowledge level and a high educational demand. Based on the results, mothers' knowledge is an important part of children with asthma management. Therefore nursing intervention program for mothers of children with asthma should be developed and the mothers should cope with asthma effectively.

The impervious surface was frequently employed as a proxy of the total environmental burden in the urban area. The impervious surface was extracted from a satellite image and the GIS (Geographical Information System) database for childhood asthma hospitalizations was generated for a total of 62,136 children using the National Health Insurance database of South Korea. Children living in an impervious environment do result in almost twice as many hospitalizations (26.58%) for asthma, as compared to the sub-urban pervious living (15.82%). Furthermore, the risk zones with persistently high hospitalizations for three years were specifically identified over the impervious sub-district alone. The impervious zone showed a small inter-year variation of hospitalizations (r: 0.937) while the sub-urban pervious fringe was found to display a yearly variation(r: 0.371). The strong temporal autocorrelation means that the impervious areas have frequent long-lived hospitalizations for asthma, thus children living in impervious areas were likely to have had more chronic asthma attacks than those living in pervious areas. These experimental results indicate that an impervious surface as thematic parameter of analysis is a crucial explanatory variable for asthma hospitalizations and its longer persistence among children.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an asthma management education program for preschool children using Roy's adaptation theory as a framework and examining the effects of this program on adaptation to asthma treatment. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pre-post-test design was used with 43 preschool children diagnosed with asthma and required to be hospitalized for inhalation therapy. An intervention group (n=23) participated in the educational program and a control group (n=20) received regular treatment. The education program was conducted and evaluated from June 30 to October 31 2012, a maximum 3 times every 24 hours during hospitalization. Two nurses conducted the program using the teaching method of Gagn$\acute{e}$ and Briggs; instruction design theory through questionnaires to measure perception of disease, behavior of adaptation to treatment with inhalation therapy. Results: Effects of asthma management education program; scores for face-pain rating decreased and time of adaptation to treatment increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group but no significant differences were found for perception of the disease's cause and treatment. Conclusion: Results indicate that the asthma management education program has positive effects on adaptation to asthma treatment of preschoolers.
