  • Objectives : The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale-Revised is a recently revised scale which has been reported as a valid tool for the assessment of depressive symptoms. It encompasses cardinal symptoms of depression described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders, fourth edition. In this study, we assessed the reliability, validity and psychometric properties of the Korean version of the CESD-R(K-CESD-R). Methods : Forty-eight patients diagnosed as major depressive disorder, dysthymia, depressive disorder NOS according to the DSM-IV criteria using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and 48 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. They were assessed with K-CESD-R, K-MADRS, PHQ-9, KQIDS-SR, STAI to check cross-validation. Statistical analyses were performed using calculation of Cronbach's alpha, Pearson correlation coefficient, Principal Component Analysis, ROC curve and optimal cut-off value. Results : The Cronbach's alpha of K-CESD-R was 0.98. The total score of K-CESD-R revealed significantly high correlations with those of K-MADRS, PHQ-9, KQIDS-SR(r=0.910, 0.966 and 0.920, p<0.001, respectively). Factor analysis showed two factors account for 76.29% of total variance. We suggested the optimal cut-off value of K-CESD-R as 13 according to analysis of the ROC curve which value sensitivity and specificity both equally. Conclusions : These Results showed that the K-CESD-R could be a reliable and valid scale to assess depressive symptoms. The K-CESD-R is expected as a useful and effective tool for screening and measuring depressive symptoms not only in outpatient clinic but also epidemiologic studies.

  • Mutual information as an association measure, has been used for various purposes as well as for calculating term similarity. There we, however, some limits in mutual information. It tends to emphasize low frequency terms extremely because the marginal value of mutual information changes inversely to frequency of terms. To compensate for this limit this study suggests relative mutual information(RMI) coefficients which normalize mutual information, and examines their characteristics in some details. The RMI coefficients also improve effectiveness of global query expansion when they are adapted to three different collections.

  • The purpose of this study is to add and revalidate items of learning cognition and learning emotion factors for online use of the K-LSS for junior college. It is important for self-reflection and improvement of academic achievement to specifically explore and analyze the sub-factors of learning cognition, learning behavior, and learning emotion for each item that can affect the learning strategy of junior college students. The added items are two items for diagnosing the concentration of attention in the learning information processing process of the learning cognitive factor and two questions about the interpersonal anxiety factor for diagnosing the level of anxiety about others in the learning emotional factor. The study area was conducted in 5 areas nationwide, and the subjects of the study were 923 junior college students excluding 327 respondents who answered insincerity. The K-LSS_r scale is a learning strategy diagnosis scale of 52 questions composed of three sub-elements of learning cognition (18 questions), learning emotion (15 questions), and learning behavior (19 questions), and reliability for generalization in this study. As a result of the verification, Cronbach's α coefficient of the entire scale was .896, and Cronbach's α coefficient of the three factors ranged from .876 to .910. The half-segment reliability coefficient of the scale was .858 in total, and the half-segment reliability coefficients of the three factors ranged from .792 to .843. The test-retest reliability verification result for 3 weeks for 350 Junior college Students in 5 regions was .884, and the validity test for generalization also confirmed that the recruitment validity is significant.

  • This study aims at developing a method for estimating passenger car equivalency (PCE) values for various vehicle types that could be considered in estimating capacity and delay at intersections without traffic signals, especially at modern small 3-leg roundabouts. Unlike signalized intersections, the PCE value has not yet been treated explicitly in traffic operations involving unsignalized intersections. Both empirical and theoretical approaches for determining the PCE values at modern small 3-leg roundabouts were evaluated. As a result, the PCEs derived in this study were highly correlated with those of field measurements.

  • In this study, experiments for selection of association terms were conducted in order to discover the optimum method in selecting additional terms that are related to an initial query term. Association term sets were generated by using support, confidence, and lift measures of the Apriori algorithm, and also by using the similarity measures such as GSS, Jaccard coefficient, cosine coefficient, and Sokal & Sneath 5, and mutual information. In performance evaluation of term selection methods, precision of association terms as well as the overlap ratio of association terms and relevant documents' indexing terms were used. It was found that Apriori algorithm and GSS achieved the highest level of performances.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate Korean Game Addiction Scale for children and adolescents. Data from a representative sample of 3,115 children and adolescents residing in Korea were analyzed to identify the factor structure and reliability of the scale. In addition, criterion-related evidence of validity (concurrent and convergent) was examined. Consistent with our theoretical assumptions, the Korean Game Addiction Scale revealed a stable higher order factor structure (second order-one factor, first order-seven factors), and the reliability of the scale was high (average Cronbach's alpha = .84, six week test-retest reliability = .75). The scale was also showed high levels of concurrent and convergent validity. Implications of the findings and directions for future research on game addiction are discussed.

  • Digital mammography is the most common technique for the early detection of breast cancer. To diagnose the breast cancer in early stages and treat efficiently, many image enhancement methods have been developed. This paper presents a multi-scale contrast enhancement method in the Laplacian pyramid for the digital mammogram. The proposed method decomposes the image into the contrast measures by the Gaussian and Laplacian pyramid, and the pyramid coefficients of decomposed multi-resolution image are defined as the frequency limited local contrast measures by the ratio of high frequency components and low frequency components. The decomposed pyramid coefficients are modified by the contrast measure for enhancing the contrast, and the final enhanced image is obtained by the composition process of the pyramid using the modified coefficients. The proposed method is compared with other existing methods, and demonstrated to have quantitatively good performance in the contrast measure algorithm.

  • Association measures are applied to various applications, including information retrieval and data mining. Each association measure is subject to a close examination to its tendency to prefer high or low frequency level because it has a significant impact on the performance of applications. This paper examines the frequency level preference(FLP) tendency of some popular association measures using artificially generated cooccurrence data, and evaluates the results. After that, a method of how to adjust the FLP tendency of major association measures such as cosine coefficient is proposed. This method is tested on the cooccurrence-based query expansion in information retrieval and the result can be regarded as promising the usefulness of the method. Based on these results of analysis and experiment, implications for related disciplines are identified.

  • Sparse ratings data hinder reliable similarity computation between users, which degrades the performance of memory-based collaborative filtering techniques for recommender systems. Many works in the literature have been developed for solving this data sparsity problem, where the most simple and representative ones are the methods of utilizing Jaccard index. This index reflects the number of commonly rated items between two users and is mostly integrated into traditional similarity measures to compute similarity more accurately between the users. However, such integration is very straightforward with no consideration of the degree of data sparsity. This study suggests a novel idea of applying different similarity measures depending on the numeric value of Jaccard index between two users. Performance experiments are conducted to obtain optimal values of the parameters used by the proposed method and evaluate it in comparison with other relevant methods. As a result, the proposed demonstrates the best and comparable performance in prediction and recommendation accuracies.

  • The most common method in the psychological measuring method for measuring user's emotions is to indirectly measure the user's emotion by using adjectives, called emotional words. The previous research, in order to observe user's emotional changes while they interact with a product, has extracted some emotional words and representative emotions, and made a set of subjective evaluation scale. In addition to adjective checklists, self-report questionnaire-type scales have been extensively used to assess user's emotions. This research suggested a self-report questionnaire-type scale using the representative emotions and a set of subjective evaluation scale made in the previous research. Also the reliability of the suggested self-report questionnaire-type scale was confirmed through the analysis of Cronbach's coefficient alpha. Therefore, the self-report questionnaire-type scale extracted through this research can be used in various ways to measure a user's user's emotions naturally expressed while using a product.
