Time-Dependent Deflections of Prestressed Concrete Bridges Constructed by the Segmental Cantilever Method (캔틸레버 시공법에 의해 가설되는 프리스트레스트 콘크리트 교량의 장기처짐해석)

  • A numerical procedure is developed to analyze the time-dependent deflections of prestressed concrete bridges constructed by the segmental cantilever method. The developed computer program accounts for the time-dependent properties of prestressed concrete materials due to the varying modulus of elasticity, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. It also accounts for the stiffness increase due to the presence of the steel reinforcements and the effects of the shear deformation of the prestressed concrete bridge girders. The program is applied to a multi-span continuous segmental prestressed concrete bridge to demonstrate its capabilities and to explore the behavior characteristics of the segmental bridges.

Optimal design of hybrid laminated composite plates (혼합 적층 복합 재료판의 최적설계)

  • In this paper, optimization procedures are presented considering the static and dynamic constraints for laminated composite plate and hybrid laminated composite plate subject to concentrated load on center of the plates. Design variables for this problem are ply angle or ply thickness. Deflection, natural frequency and specific damping capacity are considered as constraints. Using a recursive linear programming method, the nonlinear optimization problems are solved. By introducing the design scaling factor, the number of iterations is reduced significantly. Composite plates could be designed optimally combined with FEM analysis under various conditions. In the optimization procedure, verification for both analysis and design of the laminated composite plates are compared with the results of the others. Various design results are presented for the laminated composite plates and hybrid laminated composite plates.

Surface Generation in End Milling considering Tool Deflection (엔드밀 가공시 공구변형을 고려한 표면형성 해석)

  • End milling operation is very important in machining precision components. Deterioration of surface roughness and surface geometry will cause more process for surface finishing. According to the feed rate and the cutting edge geometry, the cusp which is geometrically uncut surface is determined. To reduce the cost for dinishing operation after end milling, the cusp must be remaianed in small size as possible. Due to the cylindrical type of the end mill, tool deflection is one of the main problems in surface generation. The cutting resistance and the rigidity of the end mill will determine the size of tool deflection. One more important factor which deteriorate surface quality comes from the error in manufacturing end mills. Run-out of end mill which is the difference of the radius of each cutting edges will produce the difference of the cusp size in every rotation of end mill. These three major factors to the surface quality will be analized and the result will be compared with experimental ressult.

  • To develop composite bridge deck, comparative study on the flexural characteristics of deck fabricated with filament winding and pultrusion was performed. In this study, composite deck of triangular shape was fabricated with filament winding process and flexural tests were conducted along with pultruded 'Duraspan' deck. Failure load, maximum deflection and strains were compared with each other. Also finite element analysis for filament winding deck was carried out and the results were compared with those from experiments.

  • The study developed an automatic design method of steel frames which uses nonlinear analysis. The geometric nonlinearity was considered using stability functions. Likewise, the transverse shear deformation effect in a beam-column was explained. A direct search method was used as an automatic design technique. The unit value of each part was evaluated using LRFD interaction equation. The member with the largest unit value was replaced one by one with an adjacent larger member selected from the database. The weight of the steel frame was considered as an objective function. On the other hand, load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and ductility requirement were used as constraint functions. Case studies of a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional two-story frames were presented.

An Accelerated Life Test for Burnout of Tungsten Filament of Incandescent Lamp (텅스텐 백열전구의 필라멘트 단선에 대한 가속수명시험)

  • This paper presents an accelerated life test for burnout of tungsten filament of incandescent lamp. From failure analyses of field samples, it is shown that their root causes are local heating or hot spots in the filament caused by tungsten evaporation and wire sag. Finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the effect of vibration and impact for burnout, but any points of stress concentration or structural weakness are not found in the sample. To estimate the burnout life of lamp, an accelerated life test is planned by using quality function deployment and fractional factorial design, where voltage, vibration, and temperature are selected as accelerating variables. We assumed that Weibull lifetime distribution and a generalized linear model of life-stress relationship hold through goodness of fit test and test for common shape parameter of the distribution. Using accelerated life testing software, we estimated the common shape parameter of Weibull distribution, life-stress relationship, and accelerating factor.

  • The objective of this study is aimed at developing a new class of polymer concrete, in which hydration of cement and curing of a thermosetting resin can take place simultaneously during the mixing of concrete components. For the selected mix-proportion of the new polymer, the physical and mechanical properties needed for designs are presented. These important properties are compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, direct strength, fatigue characteristics and fracture parameters. The observed properties are always compared with conventional concrete to serve as reference for engineer in deciding or selecting the proper materials for their projects, and shore protecting structure.

  • The behavior of composite materials bridge decks for use in deteriorated bridge decks replacement are investigated experimentally in this study. As for the performance evaluation of bridge decks, experimental studies on the 5 test specimens with 1/10 scale of full size were carried out. Three specimens were fabricated from sandwich upper flange and two specimens were fabricated from laminated upper flange. The constituents of bridge decks were glass fiber performs and epoxy resin. The experimental results, i.e., the maximum strength stiffness, stiffness, and deformation capacity, were summarized. The results of the finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results for the verification of validity.

Scale Effects on the Structural Behavior of Steel Unstiffened Plates Subjected to Lateral Collisions (횡충돌 하중을 받는 비보강 강판의 구조거동에 대한 크기 효과)

  • The scale effects on the permanent deformations and fractures of structures subjected to impact loadings have been aware by structural engineers for a long time. Experimental investigations have been performed with various structures to demonstrate the effects, but very few are directly related with marine structural elements. Furthermore, the causes of the scale effects have not clearly been answered yet. In this study, to quantify the scale effects on the permanent deflections, lateral collision tests were performed on steel unstiffened plates and the numerical analyses of the tested models were also conducted using a commercial package, Abaqus. After the substantiation of the numerical tool using the test results, a parametric study was carried out considering and neglecting the strain-rate hardening. Based upon the parametric study results, it may be concluded that the main cause of the scale effects on the permanent deflections of steel unstiffened plates subjected to lateral collision loads is the strain-rate effects.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse deformation properties by carrying out of flexure experimentations after fabricating polymer concrete sandwich panels which are composed of the polymer concrete in facing and expanded polystyren in cores, and to provide the basic data necessary to design, fabricate and operate the structure using these polymer concrete sandwich panels The analysed result of this study is summarized as follows. 1. The result of experiment on flexural deflection indicated that the thicker the thickness of both cores and facing of the polymer concrete sandwich panels, the smaller the deflection but the larger the ultimate shear force. In addition, it was also shown that the thicker the thickness of these cores and facing, the smaller the increasing rate of the deflection with the increase of load. 2. The breaking shape of polymer concrete sandwich panels by experiment on flexure was different according to the thickness of facing. When the facing was 5mm in thickness, it was the flexure while it was the flexure and shear failure when the facing was 5mm in thickness. As a result, it seems that the thickness of the facing has a great effect on failure. 3. There were induced not only the related formula between load, deflection and deformation according to the thickness of cores and facing on the basis of the flexure experiment, but also formula between load, horizontal displacement, Then, it seems that it will be possible to estimate the above elements by using these related formulas.
