  • In this study, as part of the practical development of technology for CLSM using pond ash, the characteristics such as flowability, bleeding rate, and strength of the CLSM according to physical properties such as particle size distribution and particulate content of the pond ash were reviewed. As a result of analyzing the properties of the collected pond ash, it was found that the characteristics of density and particle size distribution were different. As a result of evaluating the characteristics of the CLSM for three types of pond ash, it was found that the blending conditions to satisfy the quality stipulated in ACI 229R were different, and mainly affected the particle size distribution characteristics and particulate content of the pond ash. In case of coarse-grained pond ash (PA-3), mixing conditions that satisfy the performance requirements stipulated in ACI 229R were not derived. But it is considered that further review is necessary according to particle size adjustment.

  • In this paper, AUTODYN blasting simulation of single blast hole were conducted to evaluate the blasting effects of Polymer Gel. The coupling mediums used as the filling material around an explosive charge were air and gelatin. each simulation case was D I(decoupling index) 1.0, 1.25, 1.56 with air or polymer gel coupling materials. In order to evaluate blast effects full charge model was used as a reference for evaluation of blasting effects. The results of numerical analysis showed that fragmentation of a limestone model of were much more fractured by polymer gel medium than by air medium. As expected, the transmitted peak pressure was higher polymer gel coupled model than in air medium.

  • When narrowly excavated in the urban area, the wall of backfill space is not only symmetrical but also asymmetrical. In this case, the horizontal stress induced by backfilling depends mostly on the wall asymmetry and the wall friction angle. Therefore, in this study, the model test in the laboratory was conducted to investigate horizontal earth pressure with depth considering various boundary conditions such as base width, wall friction, relative density of backfill, and wall angle. As the wall is smoother and wall angle is lower from the bottom, the results showed higher the horizontal stresses due to the increase of vertical stresses.

  • The impact protection system consists of an arrangement of circular sheet pile cofferdams-denoted dolphin structuredeeply embedded in the seabed, filled with crushed rock and closed at the top with a robust concrete cap. Centrifuge model tests were performed to investigation the behaviors of dolphins in this study. Total 7 quasi-model tests and 11 dynamic model tests were performed. The main experimental results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, The experimental force-displacement results for quasi-static tests show a limited influence on the initial stiffness of the structure from the change in fill density and the related change in the stiffness of the fill. And by comparing the dissipation at the same dolphin displacement it was found that the denser fill increase the dissipation by 16% for the 20m dolphin and by 23% for the 30m dolphin. The larger sensitivity for the large dolphin is explained by a larger contribution to the dissipation from strain in the fill. In low level impacts the dynamic force-response is up to 26~58% larger than the quasi-static and the dissipation response is showed larger in small displacement. Hence, it is concluded conservative to use the quasi-static response characteristics in the approximation of the response, and it is further concluded that the dolphin resistance to low level impacts is demonstrated to be equivalent and even superior to the high level impacts.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to infiltrate $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles into a porous silicon film and a monitoring technique to detect packing density of nanoparticles within the film. Recently, research to use porous silicon as a drug carrier or a new functional sensor material by infiltrating $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles has been extensively performed. However, it is still necessary to enhance the packing density and to develop a monitoring technique to detect the packing density in real time. In this light, we forcibly injected a nanoparticle solution into a rugate-structured free-standing porous silicon (FPS) film by applying a pressure difference between the two sides of the film. We found that the packing density by the pressure-infiltration method proposed in this paper is enhanced, relative to that by the previous diffusion method. Moreover, a continuous shift in wavelength of the rugate reflectance peak measured from the film surface was observed while the nanoparticle solution was being injected. By exploiting this phenomenon, we could qualitatively monitor the packing density of $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles within the FPS film with the injection volume of the nanoparticle solution.

  • This study represents basic research into the utilization of mixed ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from the ash pond of the Taean Thermal Power Plant as a construction material. We conducted physical and mechanical experiments on the mixed ash and examined its engineering characteristics in terms of its use as a material for road landfill and structure backfill. We evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the ash by performing tests to determine specific gravity, maximum and minimum density, liquid limit and plastic limit, grain size distribution, composition (by X-ray diffraction), and loss on ignition. We also evaluated the mechanical characteristics by testing for permeability, compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression. The experiments on the mixed ash yielded a specific gravity of 2.18-2.20, dry density of $9.38-13.32\;kN/m^3$, modified CBR of 16.5%-21%, permeability coefficient of 1.32 to $1.89-10^{-4}cm/sec$, and drained friction angle of $36.43^{\circ}-41.39^{\circ}$. The physical and mechanical properties of the mixed ash do not meet the quality standards stipulated for road landfill and structure backfill materials. Mixed ash with a high content of fly ash failed to meet some of the quality standards. Therefore, in order to utilize the mixed ash as a material for road landfill and structure backfill, it is necessary to improve its properties by mixing with bottom ash.

  • During earthquake, force components acting on quay walls consist of inertia force, earth pressure and water pressure. The earth pressure is largely influenced by the backfill condition such as soil density and the installation of gravel backfill. Therefore, shaking table tests were performed by using four different model sections, which were designed by varying the soil density and the backfill materials. The magnitude and the phase of force components acting on quay wall were analyzed. Test results showed that the gravel backfill and the soil compaction were effective to reduce the excess pore pressure in backfill and the magnitude and phase of backfill thrust were much influenced by the excess pore pressure in backfill. When the input acceleration was 0.10g, the average ratios of the inertia force, the front dynamic water force and the thrust to the total force were $64\%,\;21\%\;and\;16\%$, respectively. As the excess pore pressure increased, the ratio of the thrust to the total force increased.

  • The many countries are facing the shortage of natural resources, and the supply of aggregates are being exhausted. To consider this situation a variety of studies were performed for the development of alternative resources. In particular, high density filler material was used for shielding radioactive waste, large amount of natural aggregates are required in order to produce filler material. Also, in order to improve the shielding performance of filler material, it is required to increase the density of the filler material. Therefore, in this study was carried out to provide basic data for expanding the feasibility of high density industrial waste resource as aggregate in heavyweight concrete. From the test results, OPC case, concrete strength decreased by using heavyweight waste glass as fine aggregate, however, it is improved by using mineral admixture as binder. Therefore, when the heavyweight waste glass and steel slag are applied to heavyweight concrete, it is desirable to use mineral admixture, especially to use BFS than FA. Meanwhile, when the steel slag was replaced as coarse aggregate of heavyweight concrete, elasticity of modulus and radiation shielding performance can be improved owing to high density of steel slag.

  • Presently, 3D printers manufactured by material extrusion are economical and easy to use, so they are being used in various fields. However, this study conducted a tensile test on the infill pattern and density of the PLA+ material, due to the limitations of long printing time as well as low mechanical strength. The infill area for the infill density change was measured, using a vision-measuring machine for four infill patterns (concentric, zigzag, honeycomb, and cross) in which the nozzle path was the same for each layer. The tensile strength/weight[MPa/g] and tensile strength/printing time[MPa/min] of the tensile specimens were analyzed. In this study, efficient infill density and patterns are suggested, for cost reduction and productivity improvement. Consequently, it was confirmed that the infill area and infill percentage of the four patterns, were not constant according to the infill pattern. And the tensile strength of the infill density 40% of the honeycomb pattern and infill density 20% of the cross pattern, tended to highly consider the weight and printing time. Honeycomb and cross patterns could reduce the weight of the tensile specimen by 19.11%, 28.07%, as well as the printing time by 29.56%, 52.25%. Tensile strength was high in the order of concentric, zigzag, honeycomb, and cross patterns, considering the weight and printing time.

  • Various sizes of gravels are included in the most field soils that are utilized for civil constructions. Especially, the small amounts of gravel are often included in selected soils for backfill materials, earth dams, and subbase ground. In such cases, the small amounts of mixed gravel and its shape may influence the determination of dry density of soils, which results in an inaccurate degree of compaction for soils in the field. In this study, a dry density of sand with various gravel contents (0, 10, 17, 23, 29 and 33%) and three different sizes (2.0-2.36, 3.35-4.75, 5.6-10.0 mm) was experimentally investigated for compacted or loosely packed conditions. The loosely packed sand with gravels was simulated by pouring sand into compaction mould and its density was determined. When a 33% of gravel content was mixed with sand, its dry density increased up to 15-20% for compacted specimen and 20-23% for loosely packed specimen. When a gravel content and size were the same, a dry density of compacted specimen was $0.1-0.16g/cm^3$ higher than that of loosely packed specimen. Even though the same gravel content was used, a dry density of sand with big gravels was $0.04-0.08g/cm^3$ higher than that of sand with small gravels for compacted specimen and $0.03-0.05g/cm^3$ for loosely packed specimen.
