  • In this paper, the stability of cantilever composite laminated structures with open channel section is studied. This paper deals with the buckling behavior under the variation of the geometrical shape (length ratio, crank angle in the open channel section), the fiber reinforced angle, and so on in order to offer a effective and reliable design data. Also, sensitive analyses are carried out on the stability by the interaction of design factors. Based on this fact, the proper channel section and lamination scheme of composite material cantilever structures are considered in the engineering aspect.

  • Our study aims to understand the flow of liquid in an open-top rectangular microchannel that can be used in micro total analysis systems ($\mu$-TAS) because it has advantages in terms of light transmission and energy efficiency. We measured the liquid velocity using particle tracking technique and conducted a simulation with computational fluid dynamics by altering the area of channel cross section and channel length for the capillary-driven flow in the open-top rectangular microchannel. When liquid water drops to an entrance of the fabricated microchannel with a height of 20 μm and a width of 20 ${\mu}m$, it flows along the microchannel by only capillary force. In the wetting behavior of the liquid, important parameters of this flow are channel size, contact angle and liquid properties such as surface tension and viscosity, which are used to control the flow of liquid in the microchannel.

  • Single-channel seismic exploration has proven effective in delineating subsurface geological structures using small-scale survey systems. The seismic data acquired through zero- or near-offset methods directly capture subsurface features along the vertical axis, facilitating the construction of corresponding seismic sections. However, substantial noise in single-channel seismic data hampers precise interpretation because of the low signal-to-noise ratio. This study introduces a novel approach that integrate noise reduction and signal enhancement via matrix rank optimization to address this issue. Unlike conventional rank-reduction methods, which retain selected singular values to mitigate random noise, our method optimizes the entire singular value spectrum, thus effectively tackling both random and erratic noises commonly found in environments with low signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, to enhance the horizontal continuity of seismic events and mitigate signal loss during noise reduction, we introduced an adaptive weighting factor computed from the eigenimage of the seismic section. To access the robustness of the proposed method, we conducted numerical experiments using single-channel Sparker seismic data from the Chukchi Plateau in the Arctic Ocean. The results demonstrated that the seismic sections had significantly improved signal-to-noise ratios and minimal signal loss. These advancements hold promise for enhancing single-channel and high-resolution seismic surveys and aiding in the identification of marine development and submarine geological hazards in domestic coastal areas.

  • In this study, we investigated the potential changes in the cross sectional area of the rectangular microchannel with various zeta potentials and hydraulic diameters. We changed height/width ratio as 1, 1/2, and 1/3 and investigated its effect on the potential change. For this research, FEMLAB(Comsol, verson 3.0) was used to investigate the theoretical potential distribution. The potential changes in the cross section shows that right and left surfaces affect to some ranges. For the same area and shape, the potential value is directly proportional to the zeta potential change. With the decrease in the H/W ratio, the electrical double layer is condensed to the side surfaces.

  • This study deals with free vibrations of laminated composite structures with a channel section using finite element method. In this paper, the mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite interpolation functions is adopted and a high-order plate theory is used to analyze laminated composite non-prismatic folded plates with a channel section more accurately for free vibration. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress and requires no shear correction factors supposed in the first-order plate theory. An 32×32 matrix is assembled to transform the system element matrices from the local to global coordinates using a coordinate transformation matrix, in which an eighth drilling degree of freedom (DOF) per node is appended to the existing 7-DOF system. The results in this study are compared with those of available literatures for the conventional and first-order plate theory. Sample studies are carried out for various layup configurations and length-thickness ratio, and geometric shapes of plates. The significance of the high-order plate theory in analyzing complex composite structures with a channel section is enunciated in this paper.

  • A growing bubble can be squeezed for water, and it will then encounter flow instability, which reverses toward upstream in straight micro-channels. To reduce the flow instability, a micro-channel that expands at the downstream end has been found to be effective. In the expanding area, a growing bubble will tend to move downstream because the net surface tension force of a vapor-liquid interface is inversely proportional to the local radius of curvature. We propose a static flow instability model and validate it experimentally. Moreover, we apply the local-instability parameter concept to the real design of a stable evaporative micro-channel with an expanding area. Based on the localinstability model, we establish a static design for stable expanding evaporative micro-channels.

  • In a liquid rocket engine using hydrocarbon fuels, cooling of the combustion chamber wall is necessary to prevent the combustion chamber wall from melting or structurally deforming due to high heat flux. Among the various methods, regenerative cooling, which uses fuel as a coolant and then injects it into the combustion process, has good performance. This study investigated the heat transfer characteristics of kerosene as a coolant by varying the copper cross-sectional area, the flow rate in the channel, and the current applied to the channel. Convective heat transfer occurred rapidly when the cross-sectional area of the copper channel was small and when the kerosene flow velocity was fast.
