  • During installing sheet piles for an impermeable wall or a retaining wall, vibratory hammers are widely used. Among vibratory hammers, a hydraulic hammer is used most commonly. However, a hydraulic hammer causes excessive vibration and noise due to resonance by change of natural frequency according to movements of eccentric shaft when the hammer starts and stops. In this study, new variable amplitude type hammer is developed in order to reduce the vibration and noise due to resonance produced in starting and stopping the hammer. By controlling horizontal angle in two pairs of eccentric body inside of the hammer, the amplitude and vibration of the new hammer can be controlled. The performance tests with the new hammer and existing hammers such as the hydraulic hammer and electric hammer are carried out, and the new hammer shows reduced vibration and noise results in comparison with existing hammers from performance tests. Also, this study shows that penetration rates of sheet pile using the new hammer increase due to impellent force of a backhoe in comparison with the electric hammer and penetration rate increase in comparison with a general hydraulic hammer, since the new hammer can control the amplitude during penetration of sheet pile according to soil condition.

  • In the mobile computing environment, in order to make copies of important files available when being disconnected the mobile host(client) must store them in its local cache while the connection is maintained. In this paper, we propose the prefetching mechanism for the client to save files which may be accessed in the near future. Our mechanism utilizes analyzer, prefetch-list producer, and prefetch manager. The analyzer records file access patterns of the user in a FAP(File Access Patterns) profile. Using the profile, the prefetch-list producer creates the prefetch-list. The prefetch manager requests a file server to return this list. We set the parameter TRP(Threshold of Reference Probability) to ensure that only reasonably related files can be prefetched. The prefetch-list producer adds the files to a prefetch-list if their reference probability is greater than the TRP. We also use the parameter TACP(Threshold of Access Counter Probability) to reduce the hoarding size required to store a prefetch-list. Finally, we measure the metrics such as the cache hit ratio, the number of files referenced by the client after disconnection and the hoarding size. The simulation results show that the performance of our mechanism is superior to that of the LRU caching mechanism. Our results also show that prefetching with the TACP can reduce the hoard size while maintaining similar performance of prefetching without TACP.

  • The ground in cold region consists of active and permafrost layers. The active layer at the unstable state may cause ground corrosion and uplift, when the temperature of frozen ground increases due to seasonal changes. The thermosyphon is one of the stabilization methods to maintain the ground stability in the frozen ground. The thermosyphon is a closed two-phase convection device that extracts heat from the ground and discharges it into the atmosphere. In this study, ground freezing experiment using a thermosyphon and simulated ground with the isolation material was conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of the thermosyphon. In order to consider the thermal performance of the thermosyphon, commercial numerical program (TEMP/W) was adopted. Likewise, the thermal performance of thermosyphon and thermal properties of ground were applied in the numerical model. In a series of comparisons with experiment results and numerical study, thermal performance of thermosyphon can be evaluated.

  • The establishment of a green remodeling strategy is focused on technology, so the necessity of establishing a customized strategy considering the field situation has emerged. This paper examined the technology strategy through sensitivity analysis as a methodology for guiding strategy. For a 90-square-meter detached house, nine models of the construction standards of pre-1980s, 1984, and 2010 in Seoul, Daejeon, and Busan were assessed using the optimization method that combines the energy plus engine and the ModeFrontier. Sensitivity analysis was performed, and the remodeling strategy priority was derived. For pre-1980 models, the strategy for enhancing the roof insulation performance had a significant priority. The SHGC values of the windows were found to have the next highest priority regardless of the region and the time of completion, showing that the performance standard, including the SHGC, needs to be expanded. The possibility of remodeling while maintaining the existing geometry was confirmed because the adjustment of the window wall ratio accompanying large-scale demolition works has low priority. The priorities of technology strategies in each case showed very different patterns, suggesting the possibility of establishing a remodeling strategy by a comprehensive evaluation along with economics and constructability analysis.

  • Recently, finishing materials at spandrel area, a part of curtain-wall system, are gradually forced to improve thermal insulation performance in order to enhance the building energy efficiency. Also, Building Integrated Photovoltaics(BIPV) systems have been installed in the exterior side of the spandrel area, which is generally composed of windows. Those BIPVs aim to achieve high building energy efficiency and supply the electricity to building. However, if transparent BIPV module is combined with high insulated spandrel, it would reduce the PV efficiency for two major reasons. First, temperature in the air space, located between window layer and finishing layer of the spandrel area, can significantly increase by solar heat gain, because the space has a few air density relative to other spaces in building. Secondly, PV has a characteristics of decreased Voltage(Voc and Vmp) with the increased temperature on the PV cell. For these reasons, this research analyzed a direct interrelation between PV Cell temperature and electricity generation performance under different insulation conditions in the spandrel area. The different insulation conditions under consideration are 1) high insulated spandrel(HIS) 2) low insulated spandrel(LIS) 3) PV stand alone on the ground(SAG). As a result, in case of 1) HIS, PV temperature was increased and thus electricity generation efficiency was decreased more than other cases. To be specific, each cases' maximum temperature indicated that 1) HIS is $83.8^{\circ}C$, 2) LIS is $74.2^{\circ}C$, and 3) SAG is $66.3^{\circ}C$. Also, each cases yield electricity generation like that 1) HIS is 913.3kWh/kWp, 2) LIS is 942.8kWh/kWp, and 3) SAG is 981.3kWh/kWp. These result showed that it is needed for us to seek to the way how the PV Cell temperature would be decreased.

  • Biomass bamboo charcoal is utilized as anode for lithium-ion battery in an effort to find an alternative to conventional resources such as cokes and petroleum pitches. The amorphous phase of the bamboo charcoal is partially converted to graphite through a low temperature graphitization process with iron oxide nanoparticle catalyst impregnated into the bamboo charcoal. An optimum catalysis amount for the graphitization is determined based on the characterization results of TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. It is found that the graphitization occurs surrounding the surface of the catalysis, and large pores are formed after the removal of the catalysis. The formation of the large pores increases the pore volume and, as a result, reduces the surface area of the graphitized bamboo charcoal. The partial graphitization of the pristine bamboo charcoal improves the discharge capacity and coulombic efficiency compared to the pristine counterpart. However, the discharge capacity of the graphitized charcoal at elevated current density is decreased due to the reduced surface area. These results indicate that the size of the catalysis formed in in-situ graphitization is a critical parameter to determine the battery performance and thus should be tuned as small as one of the pristine charcoal to retain the surface area and eventually improve the discharge capacity at high current density.

  • This paper presents optimized searching technique to improve the performance of H.264/AVC. The proposed CAVLC encoder uses forward and backward searching algorithm to compute the parameters. By zero-block skipping technique and pipelined scheduling, the proposed CAVLC encoder can obtain better performance. The experimental result shows that the proposed architecture needs only 66.6 cycles on average for each $16{\times}16$ macroblock encoding. The proposed architecture improves the performance by 13.8% than that of previous designs. The proposed CAVLC encoder was implemented using VerilogHDL and synthesized with Megnachip $0.18{\mu}m$ standard cell library. The synthesis result shows that the gate count is about 15.6K with 125Mhz clock frequency.

  • The most important issue in providing multimedia traffic on a mobile computing environments is to guarantee the mobile host(client) with consistent QoS(Quality of Service). However, the QoS negotiated between the client and network in one cell may not be honored due to client mobility, causing hand-offs between cells. In this paper, a call admission control mechanism is proposed to provide consistent QoS guarantees for multimedia traffics in a mobile computing environment. Each cell can reserve fractional bandwidths for hand-off calls to its adjacent cells. It is important to determine the right amount of reserved bandwidth for hand-off calls because the blocking probability of new calls may increase if the amount of reserved bandwidth is more than necessary. An adaptive bandwidth reservation based on an MPP(Mobility Pattern Profile) and a 2-tier cell structure has been proposed to determine the amount of bandwidth to be reserved in the cell and to control dynamically its amount based on its network condition. We also propose a call admission control based on this bandwidth reservation and "next-cell prediction" scheme using an MPP. In order to evaluate the performance of our call admission control mechanism, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of our call admission control mechanism, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of hand-off calls, and bandwidth utilization. The simulation results show that the performance of our mechanism is superior to that of the existing mechanisms such as NR-CAT1, FR-CAT1, and AR-CAT1.

  • A dozer is a construction machinery used to move soil mass along large open tracts of land. Soil thrust generated on the soil-track interface determines the performance of the dozer; to improve the tractive performance of the dozer, the outer surface of the continuous-track is designed to protrude with grousers. In this study, we calculated soil thrust of the dozer equipped with grousers with various shape ratios, and evaluated the optimal grouser shape ratio considering ground conditions. Grouser generated additional soil thrust on the side of the continuous-track (e.g., side soil thrust) and converted the shearing surface (e.g., from soil-track interface to soil-soil interface), increasing the soil thrust of dozer by about 1.3 to 1.6 times. The effect of grouser's shape ratio on the soil thrust of dozer differed with the relative density of the ground. As the shape ratios of grouser increased, soil thrust of dozer decreased at the relative density of 40% and increased at the relative density of 80%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the shape ratio of grouser severely affects the dozer's performance; thus, careful consideration of the optimal shape ratio of grouser is of great importance in the mechanical design, evaluation, and optimization of the undercarriage of dozers.

  • The high-level nuclear waste (HLW) repository is exposed to complex environmental conditions consisting of high temperature, high humidity, and radiation, resulting in structural deterioration. Therefore, structural health monitoring is essential, and piezo sensors are used to detect cracks and estimate strength. However, since the monitoring sensors installed in the disposal tunnel and disposal container cannot be replaced or removed, the quantitative life of the monitoring sensor and its suitability must be assessed. In this study, the life of a piezo sensor for monitoring was assessed using an accelerated life test (ALT). The failure mode and mechanism of the piezo sensor under high temperature conditions were determined, and temperature stress's influence on the piezo sensor's life was analyzed. ALT was conducted on temperature stress and the relationship between temperature stress and piezo sensor life was suggested. The life of the piezo sensor was assessed using the Weibull probability distribution and the Arrhenius acceleration model. The suggested relationship can be used in multiple stress ALT designs for more precise life assessment.
