Case Study on Success and Innovation Activities of Women Entrepreneurs: Focusing on Startups (여성 창업가의 성공과 혁신활동에 대한 사례 연구 : 스타트업을 중심으로)

  • For the national economic development, the participation of women in the social and economic activities is crucial. The popularization of start-ups, digital transformation, and WEconomy trends have lowered the barriers to opportunities for women to start a business and provide an environment in which women can grow faster. This paper examines the significance and process of success of women entrepreneurs and the characteristics of innovation strategies and achievements by linking the recently changing business environment of a company, factors influencing the success of women entrepreneurship, and innovation activities. To this end, four companies' cases were analyzed in the fields of distribution/service and consumer products/services, which are areas of large investment among female startups. The result shows that women entrepreneurs recognize the meaning of success as creating and continuing to create a 'corporate value through establishing a trust relationship with customers' within the 'balance between personal life and work.' In terms of the business ecosystem, women entrepreneurs strive for 'business activities based on the win-win growth of consumers, producers and sellers' for success, and rather 'focus on the process with a problem-solving approach' rather than achieving performance-oriented goals. Also through excellent power of observation, flexibility, and execution power, women entrepreneurs conduct business by adapting to changing trends. In terms of innovation activities, the innovation strategy of women-led companies puts priority on 'creating the value customers want' and focuses on innovation in the 'customer-centric business model' rather than technological innovation. As such, women-led companies show several differentiated characteristics, which enable them to create corporate value and achieve sustainable growth. The barriers to challenges and opportunities for women to start a business have been lowered, and an ecosystem has been created for female startups to grow. But why are there still so few women entrepreneurs, and the answer to where we need to close these gaps is ultimately a close analysis and investigation of the field. We must present milestones for growth steps through the accumulation of case studies of women startups that have exited. In addition, women can stand as economic agents only when the policy targets are subdivided and specific approaches to child-rearing and childcare for women entrepreneurs must be taken. This paper expects to serve as basic data for follow-up studies and become the basis of research for women entrepreneurs to grow as economic agents.

The Impact of Social Capital and Laboratory Startup Team Diversity on Startup Performance Based on a Network Perspective: Focusing on the I-Corps Program (네트워크 관점에 기반한 사회적 자본 및 실험실 창업팀 다양성이창업 성과에 미치는 영향: I-Corps program을 중심으로)

  • As supreme technologies continue to be developed, industries such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robots, aerospace, electric vehicles, and solar energy are created, and the macro business environment is rapidly changing. Due to these large-scale changes and increased complexity, it is necessary to pay attention to the effect of social capital, which can create new value by utilizing capital increasing the importance of relationships rather than technology or asset ownership itself at the level of start-up strategy. Social capital is a concept first proposed by Hanifan in 1916, and refers to the overall sum of capabilities or resources that are latent or available for use in mutual, continuous, organic relationships or accumulated human relationship networks between individuals or social members. In addition, the diversity of start-up teams with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and capabilities, rather than one exceptional founder, has been emphasized. Founding team diversity refers to the diversity of in-depth factors such as demographic factors, beliefs, and values of the founding team. In addition, changes in the macro environment are emphasizing the importance of technology start-ups and laboratory start-ups that lead industrial innovation and create the nation's core growth engines. This study focused on the I-Corps' program. I-Corps, which means innovation corps, is a laboratory startup program launched by the National Research Foundation (NSF) in 2011 to encourage entrepreneurship and commercialization of research results. It focuses on forming a startup team involving professors, researchers and market discovery activities. Taking these characteristics into account, this study empirically verified the impact of social capital from a network perspective and founding team diversity on I-Corps start-up performance. As a result of the analysis, the educational diversity of the founding team had a negative (-) effect on the financial performance of the founding team. On the other side, the gender diversity and the cognitive dimension of social capital had a positive (+) effect on the financial performance of the founding team. This study is expected to provide more useful theoretical and practical implications regarding the diversity, social capital, and performance interpretation of the I-Corps Lab startup team.

An Empirical Study on the Duration of Self-employment (자영업 지속기간의 결정요인)

  • The recent experience about self-employment shows three main trends: first, its share out of the total workers has steadily increased, recording 37.6% in 2001, implying its prevalence and importance; second, its share out of male workers has caught up female workers', implying its importance to males as well as females; and finally, during the recent Economic Crisis when there was mass layoff and large scale bankruptcy, its share rapidly increased, reflecting its role of a buffer to economic fluctuation. However, there have been few studies on self-employment, mainly focusing on what makes someone choose it as an alternative to being employed. This study analyzes the determinants of the duration to terminate self-employment, by applying the proportional hazard model to the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey(KLIPS) by the Korea Labor Institute. The KLIPS started the first wave in 1998 with the 5,000 household sample (and about 12,000 individual sample of household members aged 15 and more). In this study, the first four waves are used for analysis. The average duration of 5,357 spells of self-employment is 130 months. It shows slight difference between males(124 months) and females(138 months) while it widely ranges over industries (296 months for agriculture industry while 50 months for restaurant and hotel industry). Estimates of the proportional hazard model of the self-employment duration show that females are more likely to terminate self-employment while it is not statistically significant. The effect of age at starting self-employment on the hazard shows the inverse V-shape, which implies that, until a certain age(47 years), the hazard become higher as aging while, since then, it become lower as aging. The level of education has a positive effect on the hazard, implying that more education is related to the higher probability to be employed. The measures of economic performances, annual sales and earnings, are positively related to continuing self-employment while hardship at the start of self-employment measured by several ways has a negative effect. Training before opening business has a positive effect on keeping on self-employment and its effects are different over its providers, significantly positive for public providers while insignificant for private providers. More and further research on self-employment is urgent in the rapidly ageing society. To help workers to be self-employed, more public assistance is necessary for education, training, financing, marketing, management, and human resource management in order to make the olders consider self-employment as a good alternative rather than an inevitable one.

An Exploratory Study on the Business Failure Recovery Factors of Serial Entrepreneurs: Focusing on Small Business (연속 기업가의 사업 실패 회복요인에 관한 탐색적 연구: 소상공인을 중심으로)

  • Recently, as social distancing have been raised due to the re-spread of COVID-19, the number of serial entrepreneurs who are closing their business is rapidly increasing. Learning from failure is a source of success, but business failure can result in psychological and economic losses and negative emotions of the serial entrepreneur. At this point, it is very important to find a way to recover the negative emotions caused by business failures of serial entrepreneurs. Recently, a strategic model has emerged to deal with the negative emotions of grief caused by business failures of serial entrepreneurs. This study identified the recovery factors from the grief of business failures of serial entrepreneurs and analyzed Shepherd's(2003) three areas: loss orientation, restoration orientation, and dual process. To this end, individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 small business serial entrepreneurs who challenged re-startup to identify the attributes of recovery factors that were not identified with quantitative data. As a result of the study, first, recovery factors were investigated in three areas: individual orientation, family orientation, and network orientation. It was found to help improve recovery in nine categories: self-esteem, persistence, personal competence, hobbies, self-confidence, family support, networks, religion, and social support. Second, recovery obstacle factors were investigated in three areas: psychological, economic, and environmental factors. Nine categories including family, health, social network, business partner, competitor, partner, fund, external environment, and government policy were found to persist negative emotions. Third, the emotional processing process for grief was investigated in three areas: loss orientation, restoration orientation, and dual process. Ten categories such as family, partner support, social member support, government support, hobbies, networks, change of business field, moving, third-party perspective, and meditation were confirmed to enhance rapid recovery in the emotional processing process for grief. The implications of this study are as follows. The process of recovering from the grief caused by business failures of serial entrepreneurs was attempted by a qualitative study. By extending the theory of Shepherd(2003), This study can be applied to help with recovery research. In addition, conceptual models and propositions for future empirical research were presented, which can be discussed in carious academic ways.

Study on job satisfaction and organizational commitment between regular and irregular workers of Distribution Companies (유통업체 정규직 / 비정규직의 직무만족과 조직몰입에 관한 연구)

  • This study has the purpose to research on the actual conditions of discriminative treatment between regular and irregular work and find what kind of environment factors can effect on the job-satisfaction, organizational commitments. Especially, this study has addressed to improvement of conditions for irregular work and researched the difference factors between regular and irregular workers's job-satisfaction, organizational commitment, and employment - environmental. For the data collection, a total of 400 questionnaires were distributed for survey, 195 responses were available for statistical analysis. This questionnaires were sent to the distribution companies that has a variety type of employment as regular and irregular worker in Seoul province by e-mail and direct way. And SPSS 12.0(ver.) was used to analyze the data. The main results were as the following; First, the human relationship and the normative commitment were statistically different between regular and irregular work in the part of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Second, income were important to improve the satisfaction of job environment and personnel policy and the normative commitment. Corporation welfare were important for the satisfaction of human relationship, job environment and personnel policy, normative commitment affective commitment and continuous commitment. Stability of employment were important to improve the satisfaction of human relationship and job environment, normative commitment and affective commitment.

  • 인간의 생태계를 근본적으로 위협하고 있는 기후변화와 같은 환경오염 문제는 글로벌 경쟁시대의 기업 경영에 있어 강력한 제재요인 중 하나로 관심이 집중되고 있다. 국내에서도 이러한 환경문제가 중요 이슈로 부각되고 있는데, 특히 인류생존에 필수적인 자연환경을 기반으로 사업을 영위하는 농업분야는 더욱 깊은 연관성을 갖는다. 정부는 이러한 농업분야에 대하여 도시와 농촌 간 소득 불균형이나 농촌인구 노령화 등의 문제를 해결하고 미래 성장산업으로 발전시키고자 6차산업화 인증 제도를 시행 중에 있으며 앞으로의 성장이 기대된다. 또한 최근 기업의 환경을 포함하는 사회적 책임활동에 대한 관심이 높아지고 능동적으로 참여하려는 소비자의 특성 변화에 따라 6차산업화 인증을 받은 기업들도 성장하기 위해서는 기업 활동의 근간이 되는 소비자 니즈에 더욱 집중할 필요성이 제기되므로 기업의 새로운 성장 방안으로써 고객과 환경에 집중하고 사회적 가치를 창출해 나가야 할 것으로 추측된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 6차산업화 인증을 받은 기업을 대상으로 고객지향성과 경영성과 간 관계에서 환경지향성이 조절효과를 가지는 지를 밝히고자 하였으며, 연구 결과 고객지향성은 경영성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치며, 이러한 관계 속에서 환경지향성은 정(+)의 조절효과를 가진다는 것을 실증하였다. 즉, 6차산업화 인증기업이 경영성과를 제고시키기 위해서는 소비자의 변화와 기업이 수행해야 할 사회적 책임을 명확히 인식하여, 소비자 니즈기반의 환경보존과 같은 사회적 가치를 창출하고 공유하려는 친환경 지향적인 새로운 혁신전략을 수립하고 실행해 나가야 할 것이며 이를 통해 지속적인 성장을 견인할 수 있을 것이다.

공공부문 소프트웨어사업의 대기업 참여제한 제도: 최근 연구결과 및 추가연구를 위한 제안사항 검토

  • 디지털 전환(Ditigal Transformation)이 가속화되고 있는 가운데 소프트웨어는 변화를 이끄는 주요한 기반 기술로 자리매김했다. 이러한 흐름에 따라 정부도 미래 국가경쟁력 확보를 위한 국가 디지털 정책 로드맵을 발표하며 다양한 정책을 추진하고 있다. 성공적이고 지속 가능한 디지털 전환을 위해 정부와 민간이 함께 힘을 모으고 걸림돌이 될 수 있는 규제와 같은 요인에 대해서도 해결책을 찾아야 한다. 많은 규제 중에서 해결이 필요한 부분 중 하나는 국내 공공부문 소프트웨어 시장에 적용 중인 대기업 참여제한 제도가 있다. 제도가 시행된 이후부터 다양한 의견이 엇갈리고 특히 기업규모에 따른 이해당사자 간 사회적 갈등이 해결되지 않는 모습이다. 그동안 제도의 실효성과 영향도를 확인하고자 하는 여러 시도가 있었지만 보다 종합적인 관점에서 조망 가능한 검토는 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 검토를 제공하고 이를 바탕으로 향후 대기업 참여제한 제도와 관련된 연구에서 추구해야 할 방향을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 제도의 입법이 시작된 2012년 이후부터 현재까지의 관련 문헌을 검토한 결과, 제도의 취지에 부합하는 중소기업 시장 참여 및 외형 성장 증가의 측면에서 긍정적인 부분이 확인된 반면 수익성 및 품질 저하, 시장구조 왜곡으로 인한 산업 전체 경쟁력 저하, 제도의 법리적 문제점 등 부정적인 부분이 다수 확인되었다. 종합적으로는 부정적인 영향 또는 제도에 대한 지적이 더욱 많은 것으로 나타났고 제도의 유지, 철폐 등의 향후 제도의 운영 방향에 대해서도 전반적인 연구에서 유지 보다는 철폐 또는 전면 개선 등의 의견이 다수를 이루었다. 이와 같은 결과를 토대로, 본 연구에서는 건전한 산업 생태계 조성을 통한 소프트웨어 경쟁력 강화를 위한 향후 연구 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

  • 글로벌로 핵심기술 경쟁 및 최상의 기술을 적용한 제품 제조를 실현해야 하는 ICT 분야의 수출 제조 중소기업은 내부, 외부적인 환경적 요인뿐 아니라 다양한 위기상황을 겪게 된다. 이러한 위기상황을 극복하고자 기업 자체적인 전략을 다방면으로 모색하고 실행하여 성공한 수출 제조 중소 벤처기업인 '(주)쎄믹스'가 있다. 2000년에 설립한 (주)쎄믹스는 반도체 검사장비 중 하나인 Wafer Prober 제조 전문기업으로, 'Simple Perfection'이라는 슬로건 아래 23년간 'OPUS' 및 'OPERA'를 생산, 판매에 전념하고 있는 글로벌 강소기업이며, 지속적인 핵심기술 연구개발을 통해 품질혁신에 성공하였고 글로벌 반도체 검사장비 시장에서 기술적 신뢰와 브랜드 명성을 인정받고 있는 벤처기업이다. 현재 (주)쎄믹스의 입지를 구축하기까지 수출 제조기업으로서 겪은 환율관리 실패인 키코손실에서 기인한 회사 위기를, 자체적으로 기술혁신, 조직혁신, 핵심인재 육성 등 전략적 기업혁신에 성공하여 회사의 존폐위기였던 상황을 극복하였다. 우선 키코손실을 떨쳐내고 새로이 시작하기 위한 S사와의 합병, 분할 후 조직 내부에 기업가정신을 고취하였고 핵심기술을 발굴하여 세계일류상품 인증, 월드클래스 300 선정 및 완수, 6개국에 7개의 자회사 설립 통한 조직혁신, 과감한 인재등용, 인재육성 위한 사내 컨퍼런스 제도 도입, TRIZ 등을 통한 과감한 교육혁신, 인재를 위한 특별한 복지정책 구현 등을 실천하였다. 본 연구는 '(주)쎄믹스'의 위기극복 사례를 통해 일본의 두 곳 대기업만이 누리고 있던 Wafer Prober 장비 시장에서 독자적인 글로벌 판로개척을 통한 자생적 성장시스템 구축과 창의적이고 자기 주도적인 혁신체제를 구축하는 계기를 제공하여 다양한 위기상황에 직면하였거나 위기를 미연에 방지하여야 할 중소기업인과 임직원들에게 성공 사례를 제공하고자 하였다.

  • 최근 국내에서는 인구감소에 따른 일부 지역소멸이 화두가 되고 있다. 대부분이 농촌지역으로 여러 가지 원인이 있으나, 원인 중의 하나로 농업경영체의 성과 미흡에 따른 소득향상의 어려움이 있기 때문이다. 이를 극복하기 위해 정부와 지자체에서는 다양한 정책을 수립하여 지속해서 지원하고 있지만 큰 성과를 내지 못하고 오히려 농엉경영체의 요구사항만 많아지고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 경영자역량이 기업성과에 미치는 영향관계를 살펴보고 경영자역량과 기업성과 간에 있어 시장지향성이 매개역할을 하는지에 대해 분석하는데 있다. 본 연구에서는 농업경영체의 경영자역량을 독립면수로 하여 히위변수에 창의적역량, 네트워킹역량, 자기통제역량, 기술적역량을 선정하고 종속변수에는 기업성과를 매개변수로 시장지향성을 선정하고 연구를 진행하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 농업경영체의 경영자역량이 기업성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있고 시장지향성이 매개효과가 있을 것이라는 인과적 경로를 검증하고자 한다. 세계적인 불확실한 경제환경과 빠르게 변화되고 있는 국내 산업의 구조변화는 농업경영체들이 적응함에 있어 어려움이 존재하고 있는 상황에서 농촌에서 기업활동을 하고 있는 농업경영체 경영자역량의 주요 요인들을 설정하여 연구를 진행하였고 경영자들이 기업성과를 달성함에 있어 도움이 될 것이다.
