  • The purpose of this paper is to show a way for measuring the rankings of efficient seaports in Korea by using DEA(data envelopment analysis) and model suggested by Jahanshahloo et al(2006). Two inputs(birthing capacity, and cargo handling capacity) and three outputs(export cargo handling amount, import cargo handling amount, and number of ship calls), and one cross sectional data(2004) for 26 Korean seaports are considered for measuring the efficiencies. An empirical main result indicates that ranking order of efficient seaports are Okpo, Samcheok Ulsan, Daesan, Busan, Gohyun Ports. Samcheok Port is classified as the most strong efficient port among 16 general ports except 10 container ports. The Korean seaport authority can adopt the new measurement way introduced in this paper for measuring the exact ranking order of efficient seaports when it decides the development and investment to each efficient seaport.

  • This paper analyzes the technical efficiencies of 38 Korean engineering and construction firms and the efficiency changes from 1999 to 2003 using data envelopment analysis (DEA). Best practice firms in terms of technical efficiency and profit are identified. For inefficient firms, performance targets to be efficient are suggested. Technical efficiencies had been increased over the five year period, and the efficiency difference between firms had been reduced during this period. The differences in efficiency due to the differences in cooperate governance structures are statistically significant. In addition, the technical efficiency is correlated with product portfolios, degree of subcontract, rates of value added, returns on invested capital, and EBITDA.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine the dynamics of pension insurance policy-making and policy outputs under the developmental state of Korea, by analysing the first attempt to establish the national pension scheme in the early 1970s. To the aim, this article formulated the comprehensive analytical framework from the viewpoint of process-oriented perspective, linking policy-making dynamics with the policy context as an external constraint and policy output as a result of policy-making. Policy context was explored in terms of three variables of politics, civil society and economy, whilst policy-making and policy network dynamics were examined by employing the following variables: i) initiators, motivation and triggering devices, ii) number of participants and key players, iii) participants' interests, iv) major conflicting parties and key differences of allegation, and v) interactions between participants. Policy outputs were analysed by looking into the mainly reflected interests and the change of intended policies.

  • During early pregnancy, before the development of a functioning thyroid gland, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a very sensitive marker of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy. Normal values have been modified during gestation with a downward shift. The fetus is influenced by the TSH supplied by the mother. TSH and free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations vary during pregnancy and conventional units can vary between laboratories. A downward shift of the TSH reference range occurs during pregnancy, with a decrease in both the lower and upper limits of maternal TSH, relative to the typical non-pregnant TSH reference range. Each laboratory produces its own reference TSH and FT4 concentrations because there are many different assays that yield different results in pregnancy. Therefore, automated immunoassays used for serum FT4 analysis are still used widely, but the important considerations discussed above must be noted. The use of population-based, trimester-specific reference ranges remains the best way to handle this issue The slight downward shift in the upper reference range of TSH occurring in the latter first trimester (7~12 weeks) of pregnancy, typically not observed prior to 7 weeks. Their use indicates high or low levels in a quantitative manner independent of the reference ranges. These data highlight the importance of calculating population-based pregnancy-specific thyroid parameter reference intervals. A precision medicine initiative in this area will require the collection and analysis of a large number of genetic, biological, psychosocial, and environmental variables in large cohorts of individuals. Large prospective randomized controlled trials will be needed to resolve these controversies.

  • After analyzing the location, arrangement, inner structure, and form of the hunting pit in the Bronze Age, this paper sets up three types and talks about types of hunting pits. After analyzing the types of the hunting pit, three types of hunting pits are derived: mountain district - large group's arrangement - long oval - I II type(A), mountain district - arrangement in a line - oval - I type(B), flat area - arrangement in a line - oval - I III type(C). Literature, the ways in hunting pits, the purpose of the installations, and the characters are studied and compared with those of the anthropological cases. Even though hunting pits of types A and B are constructed to hide and get protein and bone of animals for breeding, there are differences in the ways in hunting and characters. Type of A seems to be constructed only for occupation that is the standardized hunting method on a small works. However, type B is the chasing method to hunt as a group and it has various purposes including main occupation. For example, it is for improving the war skills by practicing the hunting strategies and cooperating with the people. In addition, it is for getting a sacrifice for god. The type C hunting pit is estimated that it plays a role to protect themselves from invasion. It's inferred that there are many purposes for military defense and protection of people or animals within the village. It is the reason why the construction is spread in hunting pit including various purposes in the Bronze age that originates in social and economical specialization like the increase in agricultural productivity and appearance of a chief.

The film shows the changes in Charles Dickens while he wrote the book 『A Christmas Carol』. 『A Christmas Carol』 was published when the Christmas traditions were almost forgotten. The book enlightened the value of love-thy-neighbor and revived the tradition of having Christmas meals with family. The article illustrates the process of recognizing shadow while a man overcomes the life crisis of losing his persona. Referring to the biography of Charles Dickens and the historical background of his time, the article explores how the collective issues of capitalism influence his personal life. Christmas is a timeless symbol of death and rebirth then becomes a solace for those who suffer from capitalism.
