A recent study of visual working memory(VWM) under a change detection paradigm proposed an idea that the comparison process of VWM representations against incoming perceptual inputs can be performed more rapidly than the process of forming durable memory representations into VWM. To test this hypothesis, we compared the size of interference effect caused by pattern-backward masks following after either the sample(sample-mask condition) or test items (test-mask condition). In Experiment 1, subjects performed a color change detection task for four colored-boxes, and pattern masks with mask-onset asynchronies(MSOA) of either 64ms or 150ms followed each item location either after the sample or after the test items. The change detection accuracy was both comparable in the sample-mask condition regardless of the MSOAs, whereas the accuracy in the trials with a MSOA of 150ms was substantially higher than the MSOA of 65ms in the test-masking condition. In Experiment 2, we manipulated setsizes to 1, 2, 3, 4 items and also MSOAs to 117ms, 234ms, 350ms, 484ms and compared the pattern of interference across a variety of setsize and MSOA conditions. The sample-mask condition yielded a pattern of masking interference which became more evident as the setsize increases and as the MSOA was shorter. However, this pattern of interference was less apparent in the test-mask condition. These results indicate that the comparison process between remembered items in VWM and perceptual inputs is less vulnerable to interference from pattern-backward masking than VWM consolidation is, and thus support for the recent idea that the comparison process in VWM can be performed very fast and accurately.

Blocking electromagnetic waves on the exterior walls of buildings effectively reduces the intensity of electromagnetic fields in buildings, which leads to attenuation of electromagnetic disturbances, so there is a great interest in developing technologies. In this study, SiC by-products and graphite generated in the semiconductor field were selected and mixed into mortar after pretreatment such as pulverization to evaluate their physical properties and electromagnetic wave shielding performance. Considering the economic efficiency of each shielding material, only 10% volume of the outermost side of the experiment was mixed with each shielding material to evaluate the shielding performance. The shielding performance was predicted when the experiment was manufactured by mixing the shielding material with the entire volume of the experiment using the shielding effect evaluation formula. The results of the experiment showed that the shielding performance was up to 20 dB when SiC grains were mixed with shielding materials, the shielding performance was up to 18 dB when graphite powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was up to 28 dB when SiC powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was close to 30 dB, which is known to have a shielding rate of 99.9%.

In various industrial fields and infrastructure based on electronic components, such as communication equipment, transportation, computer networks, and military equipment, the need for electromagnetic pulse shielding has increased. Two methods for applying electromagnetic pulse shielding are effective. The first is construction using shielding materials, such as shielding concrete, shielding doors, and shielding windows. The other is coating shielding paints on non-shielding structures. Electromagnetic pulse shielding paints are made using conductive materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphite, carbon black, and carbon fiber. In this paint, electromagnetic pulse shielding performance is added to the commonly used water-based paint. In this study, the shielding effectiveness and bonding performance of paints using conductive graphite and carbon black as shielding materials were evaluated to develop electromagnetic pulse shielding inorganic paints. The shielding effectiveness and bonding performance were evaluated by applying six mixtures composed of different kinds and amounts of shielding material. The mixture of conductive graphite and carbon black at a weight ratio of 1:0.2 was the most effective in shielding as 33.6 dB. Furthermore, the mixture produced using conductive graphite only showed the highest bonding performance of 1.06 MPa.
Shielding for reducing exposure dose can make the diagnosis limited. The purpose of this study is to increase the efficiency of radiation protection and minimize the loss of image information by producing the shielding made of the water and the contrast medium which has different proportion and finding out the ideal proportion of them. Each shielding materials were made of water and water-soluble iodine contrast medium with the different proportion. The attenuation rate of absorbed dose was evaluated by the shielding materials in the plastic contents for measuring the efficiency of the radiation protection. As a result, the higher ratio of the contrast medium, the more efficient it is for radiation attenuation. The anatomical structure was observed most properly in case of the solution with 20 ml of the contrast medium and most difficultly in case of more than 60 ml of the contrast medium. In case of the signal intensity between skeleton and gas, the difference of average value had a significant as p < 0.001. Shielding with contrast medium attenuates less than the conventional shielding but in the examination for the sensitive part to radiation, it can be used to minimize the loss of the image information and reduce the exposure dose.
The purpose of this present study was to evaluate the surface radiation dose reduction and radiograph artifact images in computed tomography (CT) for the manufactured radiation shields by using sea-shells. The radiation convergence shields were made from silicons, sea-shells, barium powders, producted circle types of diameter 50 mm, thickness 3.5 mm for 5 kinds (only silicon shield, only barium shield, mixed sea-shells with silicon shield, mixed barium with silicon shield, mixed sea-shells with barium and silicon shield). Radiation generation and acquisition were used 4-channel multi-detector CT. The results of this study showed that mixed sea-shells with silicon shields could reduce the surface dose of 5.3% without radiograph artifact images. In the future, we will expect the radiation convergence shield as environmentally friendly materials by using the recycling of sea-shells with the advantages of silicon which can make various shapes.

Radar beam blocking which is partially or entirely interrupted by obstacles like a mountain causes underestimation of the rainfall. In this paper, partially blocked radar reflectivity is retrieved using the ARM(Accumulated Reflectivity Map). ARM is made by accumulation of the radar reflectivity and very useful product to analyze the beam blockage. The blockage correcting map could be obtained by assuming the spatially uniform reflectivity field in the ARM. This method is applied to the cases of typhoon and Changma, and we obtain the MFE(Mean Fractional Error) from two radar data, the one is objective radar data which is affected by blockage and the other is comparative radar data which is not affected by blockage. Before blocking correction, MFE is 20-35%. However, after correction, MFE decreases to 7-10%.
The CT can accurately present the anatomical structure of an organ in the human body, and the resolution of the image is excellent. On Brain CT examination, the radiation sensitivity of the orbit is high and it is subject to many exposure effects. To reduce exposure dose of lens, this study compares change of exposure dose and shielding rate about non-shielding and shielding in a way of using two shielding materials, bismuth and tungsten. In this study, we used bismuth and tungsten filament as shielding materials made by 3D printing to measure the exposure dose according to the materials thickness and each of slices. To compare each shielding rate, 1 mm to 5 mm of two materials was measured with the head phantom fixed and the Magicmax universal dosimeter placed on the eye when the shielding material is not placed, and the shielding material is placed on it. In the 1 mm thick filament, the bismuth filament showed 26.8% and the tungsten filament showed 43.1% shielding rate. Therefore, tungsten presents much greater shielding effect than bismuth.

The purpose of this study was to derive the directionality of technology development of high-power electromagnetic pulse (EMP) shielding concrete and standardization of a shielding performance evaluation method. Because the EMP shielding mechanism of concrete has not been identified clearly, and the verification method for EMP shielding performance has not been standardized, it is difficult to compare the research results between researchers. The development direction of EMP shielding concrete was derived from a consideration of the electromagnetic wave loss mechanism of metal. The standardization direction for verifying the EMP shielding performance of concrete was derived from a consideration of the electrical properties of concrete and the shielding performance evaluation methods of previous studies. As a result, the development of electrically conductive concrete is required, and test methods classified by the electromagnetic wave loss mechanism should be applied. For quality verification, the development of EMP shielding concrete will be feasible and its performance can be evaluated if a test method referencing the generalized shielding evaluation method (MIL-STD, etc.) is applied.
Multilayer transparent electromagnetic wave shielding film with 1 m wide, was fabricated by using roll to roll DC plasma coating with ITO and Ag layer on PET substrate. By optimizing properly the design parameters, such as a processing condition, the surface resistance and the thickness of each layers, the homogeneous film could be obtained. Electromagnetic wave shielding film showed the high shielding effectiveness of 23dB(99.5%) in 2-18 GHz range and the transmittance of 83.1% in 400-700nm.

In this study, we perform the weight reduction and miniaturization of the shielding element that is applied for gamma-ray detectors for imaging of gamma-ray source. Through previous studies, we implemented a lead-based shielding element that represents the shielding effectiveness and performance of commercially available gamma-ray imaging apparatus similar to the shielding body. In this paper, we designed a tungsten-based shield for weight reduction and miniaturization than lead-based shield. We performed the MCNP simulation for shield design and then we obtained the results of reducing the weight of the 17% and 51% of the volume.
