  • This study was performed to establish valid methodology for determining dynamic stability(DS) of deformation-cycle curve which is obtained through wheel tracking(WT) test, the most widely used method for forecast of rutting tendency of asphalt mixture. Existing Korean and Japanese methods for DS are unrealistic and do not really reflect characteristics of rut resistance of asphalt concretes especially when the slope of deformation-cycle curve is stabilized at the end. It was proved that the new DS developed in this study reflected rut resistance characteristics better than existing methods. It is especially effective to distinguish the mixtures with high DR(depth of rut) but stable slope at the end of curve from the mixture with lower DR and continuous slope. The field evaluation must be followed to prove whether the mixture which shows a high DS value this method perform well in the filed.

  • This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the behavior of retaining walls subject to cycles of wetting and drying due to rainfall infiltration. Reduced-scale model walls equipped with a water spraying system that can simulate the wetting process were first constructed and a series of tests were conducted with due consideration of different rainfall intensities and backfill soil types. The results indicate that cycles of wetting and drying process have adverse effects on the wall behavior, increasing wall deformation as well as earth pressure acting on the wall, and that the first cycle of wetting and drying process has more pronounced effect on the wall performance than the ensuing cycles. It is also shown that the degree to which the wetting and drying cycles affect the wall behavior depends greatly on the backfill soil type, and that the larger the fine contents, the greater is the effect of cycles of wetting and drying on the wall behavior. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • The cyclic triaxial strength test is commonly applied as a laboratory test for evaluating the liquefaction resistance ratio. However, the test procedure was not standardized in South Korea until recently; thus, the test results could significantly differ depending on the performer and apparatus, even when identical soil is used. In this study, the American and Japanese standards for the cyclic triaxial strength test were analyzed and the Korean standard was developed considering domestic circumstances. To verify the effectiveness of the standardization of liquefaction laboratory tests, several cases of cyclic triaxial strength tests were conducted and analyzed (1) following the Korean standard and (2) without following any specific instructions for the test procedure. Under (1), the deviation of the liquefaction resistance ratio dramatically decreased.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the axial displacement of the hexagonal and conical abutment in internal conical connection implant after screw tightening and cyclic loading. Materials and Methods: Internal conical connection implants were divided into two groups (n = 10): group HEX, hexagonal abutment; and group CON, conical 2-piece abutments. The axial displacement and removal torque values were measured after 30 Ncm torque tightening and 250N loading test of 100,000 cycles. The Student t test with 5% significance level was used to evaluate the data. Results: HEX group demonstrated significantly higher axial displacement values after 30 Ncm tightening in comparison to the CON group (P < 0.05). No significant difference was found in axial displacement after cyclic loading (P = 0.052). Removal torque loss before and after the cyclic loading both revealed no significant difference between groups (P = 0.057 and P = 0.138). Removal torque value decreased after cyclic loading in both groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overall, both abutment with or without hexagon index presented similar biomechanical performance except HEX group demonstrated significantly more axial displacement after applying tightening torque.

  • It is required to evaluate the axial strain of reinforced concrete beams in order to predict the ductility of reinforced concrete beams subjected to reversed cyclic loading. A model was proposed to determine the axial strains In reinforced concrete beams by analysing the behavior of reinforced concrete sections and comparing with published test results. The proposed axial strain model inclusively reflected four kinds of paths : Path 1-steel bar in an elastic stage or a unloading region; Path 2-after flexural yielding; Path 3-a slip region; and Path 4-a reversing loading region. The equations to predict the axial strains of each path were proposed. The proposed equations took into account the effects of the loading program. Comparison of axial strains between experimental results and the results from proposed equations showed to be in a good agreement with experimental results.

  • To examine the sample variability of zooplankton, samples were collected at two stations in the nearshore off Anhung (Chungnam, Korea), using a NORPAC net (76 Cm diameter, 0.333 mm mesh size) for two days, April 5 and 6, 1989. The net was towed vertically to eliminate the source of variation due to vertical migration. During the period of 6 hours, triplicate sampling was done every one or two hour at each station. Species composition and abundances at two stations were not so different, but the abundances at each station varied greatly with respect to sampling time. Greater abundance at one sampling time ranged 2.3-8.7 times of smaller abundance at another sampling time. At the level of ${\alpha}=0.05$, however, mean abundances of different sampling time did not differ significantly from each other due to the large variance. It was believed that the large variance was caused by the time dependent effect of patchiness of which parameters were varied with time because of sea water movement. From the variation within the triplicate samples, it was considered that the abundance data obtained from single tow were not significantly different from the data in the range of 50-200% of those from single tow. From these results, the necessity for the replicate and time dependent sampling was indicated. In the nearshore like the sampling site of this study, it seemed to be better to reduce the number of stations for the replicate and time dependent sampling though the proper sampling scheme was to be decided based on the goal of the study.

  • Purpose: The present study was conducted to compare any difference caused by pigmentation in the centrations and movement patterns on the cornea between circle and soft contact lens with identical material and parameters during lens wearing. Methods: Soft and circle contact lenses with identical material and parameters were applied to twenty eyes with normal tear volume for 3 hrs a day during a total of 5 days and then their lens centrations, the moving distances and rotations by repeat blinking were compared. Results: The lens centration beyond the fitting criteria was shown in initial wears of both soft contact lens and circle contact lens. However, the centration of soft contact lens was changed to the pupil center for being suitable to the fitting criteria with longer wearing time. On the other hand, the decentration of circle contact lens in the horizontal direction was still presented even with longer wearing time. The moving distances of soft contact lens and circle contact lens decreased with the expand of lens wearing but were not significantly different between total wearing period and daily wearing time. The rotation of circle contact lens by repeat blinking was significantly different from that of soft contact lens even when the wearing period was extended. Conclusions: We revealed that the lens centration and movement of circle contact lens on cornea were different from those of regular soft contact lens resulting in bigger difference with the expand of wearing period in the study.

  • This work was carried to evaluate effect of different raising periods on fatty acids and amino acids properties of Korean native commercial ducks. Korean native ducks (n = 90) from National Institute of Animal Science (RDA, Korea) were divided into 6 groups (15 birds/group) and were fed with meat-type duck diets for 8 wk old. When ducks grew at specific wk (6, 7 and 8 weeks), 2 ducks per group were slaughtered at 6, 7 and 8 wk old. Myristic acid (C14:0) and palmitic acid (C16:0) of saturated fatty acid (SFA) were the highest and arachidonic acid of unsaturated fatty acid (USFA) was the lowest at the age of 6 weeks old (P<0.05) at the age of 6 weeks old among treatments. Stearic acid of SFA was the highest at the age of 7 weeks old among treatments. There was no significant difference on other fatty acids among treatments. SFA and USFA have significant difference at the age of 8 weeks (P<0.05). Histidine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine and threonine of essential amino acid increased with passing weeks (P<0.05). There was no significant difference on isoleucine and valine (P>0.05). Every non-essential amino acids were the highest at the age of 8 weeks among treatments (P<0.05). In conclusion, fatty acid contents and amino acid contents increased until the age of 8 weeks old, but further research was needed because of deficiency of data to suggest the correct shipping time.

  • Purpose: Partial volume effect (PVE) is the phenomenon to lower the accuracy of image due to low estimate, which is to occur from PET/CT 3D image acquisition. The more resolution is declined and the lesion is small, the more it causes a big error. So that it can influence the test result. Studied the optimum image reconstruction method by using variation of parameter, which can influence the PVE. Materials and Methods: It acquires the image in each size spheres which is injected $^{18}F$-FDG to hot site and background in the ratio 4:1 for 10 minutes by using NEMA 2001 IEC phantom in GE Discovey STE 16. The iterative reconstruction is used and gives variety to iteration 2-50 times, subset number 1-56. The analysis's fixed region of interest in detail part of image and compute % difference and signal to noise ratio (SNR) using $SUV_{max}$. Results: It's measured that $SUV_{max}$ of 10 mm spheres, which is changed subset number to 2, 5, 8, 20, 56 in fixed iteration to times, SNR is indicated 0.19, 0.30, 0.40, 0.48, 0.45. As well as each sphere's of total SNR is measured 2.73, 3.38, 3.64, 3.63, 3.38. Conclusion: In iteration 6th to 20th, it indicates similar value in % difference and SNR ($3.47{\pm}0.09$). Over 20th, it increases the phenomenon, which is placed low value on $SUV_{max}$ through the influence of noise. In addition, the identical iteration, it indicates that SNR is high value in 8th to 20th in variation of subset number. Therefore, to reduce partial volume effect of small lesion, it can be declined the partial volume effect in iteration 6 times, subset number 8~20 times, considering reconstruction time.
