  • In wartime conditionsmilitary combat vehicles are required to be driven on rough roads that have significant obstacles. A wheel type dog-horse robot with a rotary suspension system was applied to overcome the obstacles. To achieve real-time analysis, a simplified model was proposed by using velocity transformations. Through comparison with the multi-body dynamics model, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed modeling was proven.

  • This paper proposes an optimum curve driving method for adeep-seabed mining robot(MineRo) in deep-sea soft ground. MineRo was designed as afour-row tracked vehicle. A study on the turning methods for the four-row tracked vehicle was conducted using three case by changing the velocity profile of each track. The configuration of the four-row tracked vehicle and soft ground equation are introduced, along with the dynamics analysis models of MineRo and soft ground, which were constructed using the commercial software DAFUL. Because the purpose of this study was to investigate a driving method on soft ground, the marine environment of the deep sea was not considered.

  • Recently, virtual test laboratory techniques have been widely used to reduce vehicle development costs and time. In this study, a virtual durability test process using multibody dynamics simulation and fatigue simulation is proposed. The flexible multibody model of the front half of a car suspension is solved using road loads that are measured from durability test courses such as a Belgian road. To verify the simulation results, the measured loads of components and simulation results are collated.

  • Modern high-performance automotive turbochargers (TCs) implement ceramic hybrid angular contact ball bearings in series with squeeze film dampers (SFDs) to enhance transient responses, thereby reducing the overall emission levels. The current study predicts the rotordynamic responses of the commercial automotive TCs (compressor wheel diameter = ~53 mm, turbine wheel diameter = ~43 mm, and shaft diameter at the bearing locations = ~7 mm) supported on ball bearings and SFDs for various design parameters of SFDs, including radial clearance, axial length, lubricant viscosity, and rotor imbalance conditions (i.e., amplitudes and phase angles) while increasing rotor speed up to 150 krpm. This study validates the predictive rotor finite element model against measurements of mass, polar and transverse moments of inertia, and free-free mode natural frequencies and mode shapes. A nonlinear rotordynamic model integrates nonlinear force coefficients of SFDs to calculate the transient responses of the TC rotor-bearing system. The predicted results show that SFD radial clearances, as well as phase angles of rotor imbalances, have the paramount effect on the dynamic responses of TC shaft motions.

  • Real-time multibody vehicle dynamics software has been developed for virtual handling tests. The software can be utilized for HILS(Hardware In the Loop Simulations) and consists of three modules such as a graphical vehicle modeling preprocessor, a real time dynamics solver, and a virtual reality graphic postprocessor for virtual handling tests. In the graphical vehicle modeling preprocessor, vehicle hard point data for a suspension model are automatically converted into multibody vehicle model. In the real time dynamics solver, the efficient subsystem synthesis method is used to create multibody equations of motion for a subsystem by a subsystem. In the virtual reality graphic postprocessor, an animator has been also developed by using Matlab Virtual Reality Toolbox for virtual handling tests.

  • This research has been conducted to design upright parts of hand-made vehicles with the purpose of reducing material and machining cost while ensuring structural safety. Aluminum knuckles were modelled with three parts in order to enhance design flexibility as well as to reduce CNC machining cost. A vehicle model was constructed in CAD program and simulated in ADAMS View in order to estimate joint forces developing during 20 degree step steering condition at 60km/h. The joint forces obtained in the vehicle dynamics simulation were used for the structural analysis in ANSYS and dimensions of knuckle parts were adjusted until the lowest safety factor reached 2.0. The weight of knuckle decreased by 50% compared to the previous version that was designed without the structural analysis. The overall manufacturing cost decreased by 33% due to the reduction in the material as well as the CNC machining effort.

  • Vehicle dynamic states used in various advanced driving safety systems are influenced by road geometry. Among the road geometry information, the vehicle pitch angle influenced by road slope and acceleration-deceleration is essential parameter used in pose estimation including the navigation system, advanced adaptive cruise control and others on sag road. Although the road slope data is essential parameter, the method measuring the parameter is not commercialized. The digital map including the road geometry data and high-precision DGPS system such as DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) based RTK(Real-Time Kinematics) are used unusually. In this paper, low-cost cascade extended Kalman filter(CEKF) based road slope estimation method is proposed. It use cascade two EKFs. The EKFs use several measured vehicle states such as yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration and wheel speed of the rear tires and 3 D.O.F(Degree Of Freedom) vehicle dynamics model. The performance of proposed estimation algorithm is evaluated by simulation based on Carsim dynamics tool and T-car based experiment.

  • Traffic signal is one of the major factors that affect the amount of vehicle emissions on urban highway. The amount of vehicle emissions in urban area is highly affected by the vehicle's cruising speeds heavily influenced by the traffic signal lighting conditions. It was attempted in this study to trace the changing patterns of the vehicle emissions by collecting the emission data from a set of simulation studies and by categorizing vehicle cruising conditions into four different groups: idling, acceleration, deceleration, and running at a constant speed. Authors propose a simple emission model prepared based on Kinematic theory. The validation test results showed that the amount of the emission estimated by the proposed model was relatively satisfactory compared to the one of the existing model employing the average speed data only as the determinant.

  • AWS (all wheel steering) is applied to improve the stability and the turning performance. Most automotive cars are mainly controlled by FWS (front wheel steering) system except some cars which are made to improve their stability by using AWS. Articulated vehicles with a pivoting joint for easy turn are difficult to make a sharp turn because of the long body and long wheelbase. Therefore applying AWS to the articulated vehicles is effective to reduce the turning radius. The AWS control method for the articulated vehicles is currently applied to only Phileas vehicles which were developed by APTS. The paper on the design of a controller to guide an articulated vehicle along the path was published but control algorithm for manual driving has not been reported. In the present paper, steering, characteristics of the Phileas vehicles have been analyzed and then new algorithm has been proposed. To verify the AWS algorithm, Commercial S/W, ADAMS was used for validity of the dynamic model and algorithm.

  • In a magnetic train set composed of more than two cars, the installation of dampers between cars is carefully considered for improving both the ride quality and the safety, particularly during curve negotiation. In this study, a dynamic simulation of the ride quality and curve negotiation of a Maglev vehicle was carried out. The dynamic model is developed based on multibody dynamics. The presented full vehicle multibody dynamic model integrates the electromagnet model and its control algorithm. By using this model, the effects of the dampers are numerically analyzed. The proposed damper is installed on the vehicle and tested to analyze its effects. In this study, the simulation and measured results of the vehicle behavior and ride quality are discussed.
