Accelerating Keyword Search Processing over XML Documents using Document-level Ranking (문서 단위 순위화를 통한 XML 문서에 대한 키워드 검색 성능 향상)

  • XML Keyword search enables us to get information easily without knowledge of structure of documents and returns specific and useful partial document results instead of whole documents. Element level query processing makes it possible, but computational complexity, as the number of documents grows, increases significantly overhead costs. In this paper, we present document-level ranking scheme over XML documents which predicts results of element-level processing to reduce processing cost. To do this, we propose the notion of 'keyword proximity' - the correlation of keywords in a document that affects the results of element-level query processing using path information of occurrence nodes and their resemblances - for document ranking process. In benefit of document-centric view, it is possible to reduce processing time using ranked document list or filtering of low scored documents. Our experimental evaluation shows that document-level processing technique using ranked document list is effective and improves performance by the early termination for top-k query.

Development of a Framework for Semi-automatic Building Test Collection Specialized in Evaluating Relation Extraction between Technical Terminologies (기술용어 간 관계추출의 성능평가를 위한 반자동 테스트 컬렉션 구축 프레임워크 개발)

  • Due to the increase of the attention on relation extraction systems, the construction of test collections for assessing their performance has emerged as an important task. In this paper, we propose semi-automatic framework capable of constructing test collections for relation extraction on a large scale. Based on this framework, we develop a test collection which can assess the performance of various approaches to extracting relations between technical terminologies in scientific literatures. This framework can minimize the cost of constructing this kind of collections and reduce the intrinsic fluctuations which may come from the diversity in characteristics of collection developers. Furthermore, we can construct balanced and objective collections by means of controlling the selection process of seed documents and terminologies using the proposed framework.

  • The development of multimedia devices with built-in cameras such as smart devices and various studies using video-related multimedia data such as images and video obtained from the devices have been actively conducted. These studies deal with image data. An image can be defined as a set of color information obtained from a digital sensor called a pixel. Images contain various cognitive information such as color, lighting, objects and so on. In order to extract or process such information, it is necessary to clearly understand the composition of colors. In this paper, we introduce 3-dimensional information visualization method which can effectively express the results of image processing together with color distribution. This study visualizes the characteristics of image related multimedia data as well as the characteristics of various analytical data derived from it, so that researchers can transmit the image information more clearly and effectively.

  • Temporomandibular disorders(TMD) have been defined as a collective term embracing a number of clinical problems that involve the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory muscles, and associated structures. Since Dr. Costen, an otolaryngologist, published his article in 1934 claiming that pain in and around the jaw and "related ear symptoms" improved with alteration of the bite, diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders(TMD) have been within the concept of occlusion. However most of the modern descriptions for TMD no longer include occlusal disorders within their domain. Despite this trend toward the exclusion of occlusal disorders from TMD domain, the historical linkages between TMD and occlusal therapy are still strong. Currently the most popular theories regarding TMD etiology are based on the biopsychosocial model. In the future, treatment modalities should be directed at the pathophysiological processes of joint and muscle pain as well as the psychosocial aspects of chronic pain.

  • A decision-theretic concept is introduced to investigate whether targets of interest in array sensor systems are present at some steering direction or not. The solutions to this problem are described as a set of discrete numbers 0 or 1 corresponding to the direction under consideration. This coded number representation is transplanted in the optimisation technique based on the Hopfield neural network, which may provide an easy understanding of determining the direction of arrival (DOA) of sources. Difficulties encountered in using the conventional state schemes of Hopfield neural network models are addressed and their related issues are raised. To deal with them, an idea that a neuron that decreases more energy difference for its state change of 0 to 1can have higher priority in the order of state transition than others is introduced. This does not only lead to an new state update scheme but also opens a different story in comparison to previous work. To cast the perspectives of the proposed approach and illustrate its effectiveness in source direction finding in array sensor system. simulation results and related discussions are presented in this paper.

Teachers' Perception of Advanced Placement Program (공동AP(대학과정선이수제)제도에 대한 교원인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' perception of Advanced Placement Program. Participations of this study were 111 teachers from science high schools and gifted science high schools. The results showed as follows. First, teachers perceived positively regarding AP program and were willing to teach AP program. However, teachers perceived that schools were not ready to start AP program. Also, They perceived that teaching materials development, more teachers to teach AP programs, and teacher training programs were needed to set up AP Programs in science high schools. For the professional development, 60-hours teacher training program and incentive system for the AP teachers were needed. Implications of the study were discussed in depth based on the results.

  • 초전도 재료는 선재의 형태로 가공하면 송전선이나 변압기, 발전기 그리고 전력 저장장치 등에 사용되어 전력계통의 효율을 극대화시킬 수 있는 재료로서 실제 응용 기기의 개발을 위해 많은 연구가 수행되고 있다. 더우기 1980년대 후반에 개발된 고온초전도 산화물 재료는 액체질수의 비등점인 77K 이상에서 초전도현상을 나타내어 초전도 현상의 응용에 대한 기대를 고조시켜 이에 대한 연구를 더욱 활성화시키고 있다. 초전도선재 연구는 그간 PIT(Powder in Tube) 공정을 이용한 Ag/Bi-2223(Ag/$Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O$) 선재가 높은 전기적 성질과 장선 가공상의 잇점으로 인해 많은 연구와 성과가 있었다. 그러나 Ag/Bi-2223선재는 강한 자기장 하에서 통전 능력이 현저하게 저하되는 성질 때문에 높은 자기장하에서 사용하기 위해서는 사용온도를 액체질소온도보다 상당히 낮은 20K 부근까지 낮추어야 한다는 점 때문에 전력기기 개발에 제한이 따르는 단점이 있다. 이에 반해 최근에 개발된 금속/YBCO 박막 복합선재는 높은 전기적 특성 이외에 특히 높은 자장에서도 통전 능력의 저하가 적어 제한 없이 전력기기의 모든 분야에 사용할 수 있는 특징이 있다. 따라서 1993년에 일본에서 Ni 금속기판에 물리적 증착방법으로 YBCO($YiBa_2Cu_3O$) 박막을 증착시킨 선재제조에 성공하고 있어 1996년에 Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL)에서 Rolling Assisted Biaxially Textured Substrate (RaBiTS) 라는 집합조직을 형성시킨 금속기판이 개발되어 연속적인 가공의 가능성이 확인된 후 이의 특성향상 및 가공기술 개발을 위한 많은 연구가 수행되고 이다. 이 글에서는 이제 까지 개발된 금속기판을 사용한 YBCO계 초전도 박막형 선재의 제조기술 중에서 최근 가장 가능성 있는 것으로 평가되는 RABiTS 방법을 위주로 그 외에 IBAD와 ISD 방법에 관하여 소개하고 현재까지의 개발현황 및 앞으로의 전망에 대하여 간략하게 기술하고자 한다.

  • Recent environmental issues such as genetically modified organisms, the loss of biodiversity, climate change, and nuclear waste cannot be reduced to a matter of science or society and explained through nature-society dualist approaches because of their complexity and heterogeneity. This paper examines how nature-society dualism has been embedded in science studies and geography and how this dualism can be overcome. Actor-Network Theory as an attempt to overcome this nature-society dualism is appropriate in analysing "strange imbriglio" of biology, politics, technoscience, market, value, ethics and facts that constitute our society by focusing on heterogeneous association, and can contribute to providing a useful framework to solve environmental problems.

  • In the recent years, there has been attempts to try to understand the urban waterfront in diverse aspects. This article aims to understand basically the port-city's waterfront by the cultural interpretation of it in the basis of the concept of Water Culture. Water has the attribute that put down the border between inside and outside. This attribute of water leads to the attributes of Sea, such as dynamism, collectivity, and openness. The perimetric quality, openness, hybridity, and passage quality of the sea-port city's waterfront are resulted from these attributes of water and sea. These cultural attributes of urban waterfront exert a effect upon the residents' cultural identity of sea-port city. Thus the correlation between waterfront's attributes and the cultural identity should be reflected in the stage that its development is planned.

  • This paper deals with the problem of estimating structure and motion from long continuous image sequences, applying the Expectation Maximization algorithm based on extended Kalman smoother to impose the time-continuity of the motion parameters. By repeatedly estimating the state transition matrix of the dynamic equation and the parameters of noise processes in the dynamic and measurement equations, this optimization gives the maximum likelihood estimates of the motion and structure parameters. Practically, this research is essential for dealing with a long video-rate image sequence with partially unknown system equation and noise. The algorithm is implemented and tested for a real image sequence.
