An Analysis of the United States Elementary Mathematics Textbooks - Focused on Probability in "Everyday Mathematics" - (미국 초등학교 수학 교과서 "Everyday Mathematics" 의 확률 영역 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the United States Elementary Mathematics textbooks "Everyday Mathematics", focused on area of the probability. The concept of probability as qualitative probability is taught from Kindergarten in EM curricula for progressive mathematising. EM have reflected both perspectives in probability which are a frequency perspective and a classical perspective. And EM includes abundant activities for remedying the misconceptions of probability. On the basis of the results from this analysis, we have five suggestions which are helpful for the revision of the Korean national curriculum.

  • 본 논문에서는 민감한 양적 정보를 얻기 위한 조사에서 응답자들이 정직하게 응답하기를 꺼리는 질문들에 대하여 응답자의 비밀을 노출시키기 않고서 양적 정보에 대한 보다 정확한 정보를 얻을 수 있는 양적 확률화응답기법을 인터넷 상에서 사용할 수 있도록 구현하고자 한다. 본 시스템에 DB 환경에 바탕을 두어 기존의 온라인 설문조사 시스템 및 질적 확률화응답기법과 연계하여 자료를 공유할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 독립된 스팟 서베이(spot survey)가 가능하도록 구현하고자 한다.

베이즈주의와 오래된 증거의 문제

  • 베이즈주의는 믿음의 정도라는 확률의 의미해석과 수학적 확률론에 의한 계산체계를 기초로 하여 가설과 증거간의 입증(confirmation) 관계를 명료하게 분석한다. 베이즈주의는 증거 E가 가설 H를 입증한다는 것을 PR(HIE&K)-PR(HIK)>0으로 정의한다. 그러나 이러한 분석이 과연 과학자들의 입증개념을 올바로 반영하고 있는가 하는 비판이 오래된 증거(old evidence)의 문제로부터 제기되었다 오래된 증거는 이미 알려진 정보이기 때문에 완전한 확률 값 1을 부여받는다. 이 때 오래된 증거가 가설을 입증할 수 있는가 하는 질문은 베이즈주의자와 실제 과학자 사이에 서로 다른 답변을 도출한다. 먼저 베이즈주의에 따르면 오래된 증거가 가설을 입증할 수 없다. 그것은 PR(EIK)=1일 때 PR(HIK)=PR(HIE&K)의 결과가 도출되기 때문이다. 하지만 과학사의 여러 예들로부터 제시되는 실제 과학자들의 입증개념에 따르면 오래된 증거가 가설을 입증하고 있다. 필자는 이와 같은 입증개념의 이질성 문제가 다만 어떤 증거가 입증 가능한 것인지를 구분해야 하는 질적인(qualitative) 문제일 뿐만 아니라 증거가 가설을 어느 정도 입증하는지 하는 입증도를 정확하게 측정해야 하는 양적인(quantitative) 문제라는 점을 밝힌다. 특히 필자는 양적인 문제를 해결하면 질적인 문제가 자연히 해결된다는 점을 밝히고, 반 프라센이나 가버가 제안한 전략이 모두 질적인 문제만을 다루기 때문에 부분적인 해결책에 지나지 않는다는 점을 밝힘으로써 오래된 증거의 문제의 본질은 양적인 문제에 있다는 점을 주장한다.

확률화응답에 대한 대수선형모형

  • 많은 사회과학 조사에서 분할표 형태로 얻어진 범주형 자료에는 오분류(misclassification)로 인한 오차가 내재되는 경우가 종종 있다. 질적속성 추정을 위한 확률화응답은 이러한 오분류 문제의 한 특수한 경우로 여겨지기도 한다. 그래서 확률화응답을 통한 범주형자료는 혼합된 분할표(mixed-up contingency table)로 여길 수 있는 바, 본 논문에서는 이에 대해 대수선형모형(log-linear model)을 설정하고 Chen과 Fienberg(1976)의 Iterative scaling procedure(ISP)에 의하여 얻어진 최우추정량의 극한을 이용하였다. 이 결과 Warner(1965) 형태의 대칭기법에 대해서는 Singh(1976)에 의하여 제안된 최우추정량과 같아지게 됨을 보임으로써 Warner에 의해서 제시된 추정량이 최우추정량으로 적절하지 않음을 확인해 보고, 무관질문기법에 대해서는 Greenberg, et al.(1969)에 의해서 제안된 추정량이 추정의 관점에서 최우추정량으로 적절하지 않음을 알아 보았다.

  • This research intends to look into how mathematically gifted 6th graders (age12) who have not learned conditional probability before solve conditional probability problems. In this research, 9 conditional probability problems were given to 3 gifted students, and their problem solving approaches were analysed through the observation of their problem solving processes and interviews. The approaches the gifted students made in solving conditional probability problems were categorized, and characteristics revealed in their approaches were analysed. As a result of this research, the gifted students' problem solving approaches were classified into three categories and it was confirmed that their approaches depend on the context included in the problem.

  • Investigations on the contaminated lands due to heavy metals from mining activities or hydrocarbons from oil spillage for example, should be planned based on specific fitness-for-purpose criteria(FFP criteria). A FFP criterion is site specific or varies with situation, based on which not only the data quality but also the decision quality can be determined. The limiting factors on the qualities can be, for example, the total budget for the investigation, regulatory guidance or expert's subjective fitness-for-purpose criterion. This paper deals with planning of investigation methods that can satisfy each suggested FFP criterion based on economic factors and the data quality. To this aim, a probabilistic loss function was applied to derive the cost effective investigation method that balances the measurement uncertainty, which estimates the degree of the data quality, with the decision quality. In addition, investigation planning methods when the objectives of investigations do not lie in the classification of the land but simply in producing the estimation of the mean concentration of the contaminant at the site(e.g. for the use in risk assessment), were also suggested. Furthermore, the efficient allocation of resources between sampling and analysis was also devised. These methods were applied to the two contaminated sites in the UK to test the validity of each method.

  • This research deals with the problems encountered in designing systems for more efficient and effective information retrieval used in the proliferation of literature. This research was designed to develop and test 1) the partitioning a large bibliographic data base into quality oriented subsets (quality filtering), and 2) a system for effective and efficient information retrieval within subsets of data base (relevance). In order to accomplish this partitioning, the 'kernel' technique of graph theory was applied. In addition, a method of quality filtering utilizing the 'epidemic' theory and the 'obsolescence' of scientific literature was developed.
