Current Status of Air Pollutants from Ships and Reduction Technologies (선박 기인 대기오염물질 현황 및 저감 기술 소개)

  • There is a lot of concern around the world about air pollution from ships. The majority of air pollution from ships comes from fuel combustion. The combustion process produces various air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter (PM), each of which has adverse effects on people and is a major environmental problem. To prevent this, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has strengthened the regulation of pollutant emissions through the Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution. This paper discusses the types of air pollutants emitted by ships, their current status, and the latest technologies to reduce emissions of NOx and SOx.

A Study on the Reduction of Harmful Exhaust Gas with Diesel-Methanol Stratified Injection System in a Diesel Engine (층상연료분사(경유/메탄올)를 이용한 디젤엔진의 유해 배출물 저감에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, reduction of harmful exhaust gas in a diesel engine using stratified injection system of dual fuel (diesel fuel and methanol) was tried. The nozzle and fuel injection pump of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject dual fuel in order from the same injector. The quantity of each fuel was controlled by micrometers, which were mounted at rack of injection pumps. The injection ratio of dual fuel was certificated by volumetric ratio in injection quantity test. Cylinder pressure and exhaust gas were measured and analyzed under various supply condition of duel fuel. We confirmed that combustion of dual fuel was performed successful1y by using modified injection system in a D.I. diesel. Soot and NOx are simultaneously reduced by stratified injection without large deterioration of thermal efficiency, but THC and CO are relatively increased.

  • A numerical simulation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NO with $NH_3$ is conducted over the $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts. The governing $NH_3$ and NO transport equations are considered by using the time-dependent FCT (Flux-Corrected Transport) algorithm. After a validating simulation for $NH_3$ step feed and shut-off experiments is analyzed, transient behavior of $NH_3$ and NO concentration in a SCR catalyst is investigated by changing such parameters as inflow $NH_3$ concentration, temperature of the catalyst, and $NH_3$/NOx ratios.

  • Plasma/catalyst combined reactor was designed to overcome the limits of plasma and catalyst technologies. Optimum reductant and catalyst was selected from screening test. Experiments about the concentrations of reactant and $H_2O$ and the effect of temperature were carried out. Hydrocarbons with double bond such as propylene and so on were more reactive than any other reductants in plasma/catalyst condition. Photocatalyst, especially hombikat >$TiO_2$ with the largest surface area among the catalysts tested, showed the highest DeNOx efficiency in plasma/catalyst reaction. As the concentration of $H_2O$ increased, the removal of NO was enhanced. The increased concentration of >$O_2$ promoted the reaction of NO which was oxidized to$NO_2$.

Reduction of Nitrogen Oxide by Fuel Staged Technology on the Combustion of Gasification Fuel (가스화 연료 연소시 단계적 연료주입 기술에 의한 질소산화물 저감)

  • Coal gasification fuel has generally a lower calorific values than natural gas and also contains ammonia which is a main source of fuel NOx. Such a fuel is in need of the advanced technologies for the NOx reduction with higher combustion efficiency. Therefore fuel staged combustion was investigated for the fuel NOx control using a bench scale gas combustoi for the fuel NOx control. Parametric screening studies were performed with the variation of air ratio, retention length and reburning fuel. The NOx reduction efficiency was increased with an increase of total air ratio having optimum reburning air ratio differently, The Increased retention length of the reburning zone was preferable for NOx reduction. Hydrocarbonic reburning fuels like propane and butane were more effective for the NOx reduction efficiency than hydrogen fuel. The NOx concentration at exit was linearly increased according to the fuel-N the fuel.

  • The effects of a WI(Water Injection) at the intake Pipe and an urea injection at the exhaust pipe for a 4-cylinder DI(Direct Injection) diesel engine were investigated experimentally The water quantity was controlled by temperature of intake manifold and MAF(Manifold Air Flow). In addition, the urea quantify was controlled by NOx quantify and MAF. Effects of WI system, urea-SCR system and tandem system were investigated for with and without EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation). As the results. the SUF(Stoichiometric Urea Flow) and NOx map were obtained. In addition, NOx results can be visualized with engine speed and engine load. It was concluded. therefore, that the NOx reduction effects of the tandem system without the EGR were more than those with the EGR base engine.

  • It is reported that we are facing the serious environment pollution difficulties such as acid rain, green house effects, etc. The gaseous matter CO, NOx, SOx, VOCs which are regarded as main factors for these current pollutions are mainly emitted from power plants and vehicles. Therefore several leading countries are regulating the related laws strictly, especially exhaust emissions from a Diesel engine without an after treatment device. The Objective of this study is to find out NOx removal characteristics focused on emissions of a Diesel engine using radical at each engine speed and load. It is generated from outer air and put into a mixing chamber in the end of exhaust line. In addition, the optimum temperature condition to activate reaction by radical is experimentally carried out. Concentration of exhaust emissions is analyzed from the gas anlayzer(KaneMay) and FTIR to estimate by-products.

  • The refuse incineration plant has an important role in saving the combustion energy for local heating system. But harmful combustion gas(NOx etc.) leads to some serious environmental problem. To reduce the gas, a SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction)system is installed and it is controlled by adjusting the flow of ammonia gas(NH3) . In this paper, we apply a repetitive control method to reduce NOx by adjusting the flow of ammonia gas for SCR system in a refuse incineration plant which is located in Haeundae, Pusan, Firstly, we analyze the inlet NOx period by FFt method, and verify its periodic variations. Secondly, we design a repetitive control system by using state space model method. Lastly, the effectiveness of repetitive control system is shown by comparing to a conventional PID control in simulation and experimental results.

환경친화의 코제너레이션 시스템

  • 코제너레이션이란 Co(공동의)와 Generation(발생한다)의 복합어로 이것을 시스템업한 것을 코제너레이션 시스템이라한다. 코제너레이션 시스템은 전기와 열을 동시에 생산하는데서 열(熱)병합 발전시스템이라고도 하며, 종래 대기 가운데 방출되고 있던 엔진배열(排熱)을 회수하여 발전함과 동시에 이것을 활용하여 종합에너지효율을 75$\%$전후로까지 높이는 시스템이다. 배열 이용으로 보일러 운전시간을 단축시켜 연료소비량을 줄일 수 있게 되어 이산화탄소($CO_2$)를 삭감할 수 있는 외에, 연료를 연소시킴으로써 발생하는 질소산화물($NO_x$)에 대해서도 그 저감기술이 여러 가지 개발되고 있어 국가에서 정한 기준치 이하로 억제할 수 있게 되었다. $CO_2$에 대해서는 지구 온난화방지 교토회의에서 1990년 대비 6$\%$삭감에 합의가 이루어졌으며, 이것을 해결할 수 있는 에너지효율화 환경기기로서 코제너레이션 시스템은 이제부터 보급이 가속화될 것으로 생각된다.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties but the reason for this is not clear. Especially the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel demands extensibe investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. Bio-Diesel oil has a great possibility to solve the pollution problem caused by the exhaust gas from diesel engine vehicles. The use of bio-oils in diesel engines has received considerable atten-tion to the forseeable depletion of world oil supplies. So bio-diesel oil has been attracted with attentions for alternative and clean energy source. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fea-sibility of the rice-bran oil for alternative fuel in a diesel engine with rgard to exhaust emis-sions.
