Tip burn has been reported as one of the most serious physiological disorder in Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum Rottl.) cultivated in plastic film house. In this study, a physiography and chemical properties of 132 plastic film house soils were investigated to elucidate factors affecting tip burn symptom. Also influence of soil properties on tip burn was statistically determined by path analysis and association analysis including a chi-square test or logistics analysis. Probability distribution of inorganic aqueous species, such as ammonia (g) was calculated using MINTEQ program. Soil order and chemical properties, especially pH, exchangeable calcium and inorganic nitrogen, showed a significant relationship with tip burn of Chinese chives. Tip burn symptoms occur mainly in an alkaline soil classified as Alfisols. Result of linear regression and path analysis exhibited that formation of ammonia (g) from soil solution depend upon soil pH and were associated with ammonium resulting from soil organic matter or nitrate. These results indicate that tip burn symptom of Chinese chives is directly affected by ammonia gas originated from alkaline soil condition.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effect of application level of animal manure on the nitrate nitrogen concentration, sugar content and animal intake of forage sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, cv. Pionee. 988) in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 50, 100 and 150MT in cattle manure, 20, 40 and 80MT in swine manure, and 10, 20 and 40MT/ha in poultry manure. Non-application plot(control) was involved. The nitrate nitrogen concentration was increased with increasing of application level of animal manure(P<0.05). Average nitrate nitrogen concentration was 397, 512, and 609mg/kg at low, medium and high application level of animal manure. The nitrate nitrogen concentration by plant height was 438mg/kg at 50~60m of plant height, 454mg at 100~120cm, and 418mg at 200~220cm. The nitrate nitrogen concentration of stems was 376mg, and significantly higher than that(135mg) of leaves(P<0.05) regardless of animal manure type, and lower parts of stems and leaves were significantly higher than those of upper parts of plants(P<0.05). Average nitrate nitrogen concentration of leaves was 151mg at lower, and 58mg at upper parts of plants, and the concentration of stems was 357mg at lower, 511mg at middle, and 610mg at upper parts of plants. The sugar contents of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid was decreased with increasing of application level of animal manure(P<0.05). Average sugar content was 4.9, 4.4, and 4.3。 at low, medium and high application level of animal manure. The sugar content by plant height was 3.9。 at 50~60 and 100~120cm of plant height, and 6.1。 at 200~220cm of plant height. Animal intake of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid was decreased greatly with increasing of application level of animal manure. Average intake was 73.9, 55.7, and 52.3% at low, medium and high application level of animal manure. The intake by animal manure type was 73.7% in cattle, 59.7% in swine and 62.5% in poultry manure.
Suppression of nitrate accumulation in vegetables through foliar application of micronutrients was investigated. Spinach and lettuce were grown in pots under greenhouse condition. Micronutrient solutions containing Cu, Mn, Mo, and Zn were used; chitosan was added into one and the other contained chitosan oligomers. The micronutrient solutions were sprayed on the leaves at 3 and 4 weeks after transplanting of 20-day-old seedlings. Plants were harvested at 5-weeks after transplanting. Yield, contents of chlorophyll, Brix value, micronutrient, and nitrate, and nitrate reductase activity were measured. Fresh weights of lettuce and spinach were significantly increased by the foliar application of micronutrients. Contents of chlorophyll and micronutrients were higher in micronutrient-treated plants, while those of nitrate were reduced by about 10 and 14-23% in lettuce and spinach, respectively. Compared to the control plants, nitrate reductase activity was higher in plants treated with micronutrients. Results of this study indicate the effect of micronutrients on the suppression of nitrate accumulation was relatively small in comparison to the contents of nitrate in leaves of spinach and lettuce. To maximize the effect, nutrient composition in solution, application time, and frequency should be further examined, taking into consideration nitrogen level in soil and other environmental factors including light condition.
To establish N fertilizer recommendation method based on nitrate content of the soil for the Chinese cabbage grown in the plastic film house. Chinese cabbage was grown in the pots containing the plastic film house soils with various levels of $NO_3{^-}-N$ and different levels of fertilizer N. The nitrate nitrogen showed the positive correlation with nitrogen uptake amount by plant and the negative correlation with fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency of plant. The content of nitrate nitrogen in soil for maximum yield of Chinese cabbage was 310 mg/kg. An equation for the recommendation of fertilizer N for Chinese cabbage based on $NO_3{^-}-N$ in the soil was suggested.
To find diagnosing method of nitrogen status in tomato plant for determining optimum application rate of side dress, chlorophyll reading values were measured by portable chlorophyll meter(SPAD 502, Minolta), and compared with nitrogen supplying capability of soils. Regression between dry weight, amount of nitrogen uptake, and chlorophyll reading at stalk positions of tomato grown on the condition of no fertilization were evaluated For 6 green house soils with different nitrate concentrations ranged from $55mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $306mg\;kg^{-1}$. The chlorophyll reading of tomato leave was significantly correlated with amount of nitrogen per unit area of leave suggesting that chlorophyll content is useful for nitrogen diagnosis of tomato plant. The chlorophyll reading showed peak at the 15th leaf of stalk position on the 45th days after transplanting and this suggested that below or near the 15th leaf and before or near the 45th days after transplanting is the critical stalk position and time for diagnosing nitrogen status of tomato by chlorophyll test. The chlorophyll reading at the 14th leaf on the 40th days after transplanting was significantly correlated with soil nitrate status, dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. From the above correlation, the chlorophyll reading value of 57.1 at the 14th leaf of tomato was estimated as the critical level for maximum dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. Consequently, chlorophyll reading of tomato leaves measured by portable chlorophyll meter was thought to be available as a rapid plant test for predicting the nitrogen supplying capability of green house soils.

With ${15}^N$ labeling under split roots system of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) and forage rape (Brassica napus L.) grown at $5^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, the N flows were respectively quantified to investigate the transport of newly absorbed nitrate-N in whole plant level at low temperature. Comparing with $25^{\circ}C$ culture condition, the total absorbed nitrate-N content at $5^{\circ}C$ decreased to 59.3% and 27.1% in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. About 2.5% and 7.6 % of nitrate-N were transported into roots, respectively, in winter rye and in forage rape at $25^{\circ}C$. These proportions increased at $5^{\circ}C$ to 3.8% and 10.9%, respectively. Total N contents transferred by xylem in winter rye grown and forage rape grown at $25^{\circ}C$ during were 55.9 and 54.4 mg N/plant, respectively. xylem flows at $5^{\circ}C$ were 60.4% and 28.8% lower than at $25^{\circ}C$ for winter rye and forage rape. These valves represented that averagely 96.8 % and 90.8% of total absorbed nitrate-N were transferred to leaves in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. Phloem flows were the smallest among other N flows and were much less influenced by temperature treatment for two species examined. About 2.5% and 0.5% of absorbed N were recycled into roots by phloem transport at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, for winter rye and forage rape. These proportions increased to 5.2% and 0.9% at $5^{\circ}C$.
In order to examine the seasonal variation of organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds, nitrogen compounds in compost were determined at various composting periods. Total nitrogen, organic nitrogen and biodegradable nitrogen contents in compost were almost not changed, while nonbiodegradable nitrogen contents were increased a little with the lapse of composting time. But effective contents of total nitrogen, organic nitrogen and biodegradable nitrogen were decreased with the progress of composting, while effective contents of nonbiodegradable nitrogen were not changed during composting. Ammonium nitrogen contents in compost were highest at the start of composting, and then the contents were decreased with the lapse of composting time. But after turning the contents were increased again, and thereafter the contents were decreased with the progress of composting. Nitrate contents showed a tendency adverse to ammonium nitrogen contents. Organic nitrogens in organic matter in compost were increased slowly within 9 weeks after composting, and thereafter the contents were increased rapidly to 21 weeks after composting. Total nitrogen contents determined by $F{\"{o}}rster$ Method were higher than those determined by Kjeldahl Method. Total nitrogen contents determined by Kjeldahl Method were 6% higher than biodegradable nitrogen contents determined by $F{\"{o}}rster$ Method. Loss of nitrogen in compost was highest at early periods of composting and its losses determined by Kjeldahl Method and $F{\"{o}}rster$ Method in 30 weeks after composting were 50% and 48% of total nitrogen, respectively. Highly positive correlations were observed among total nitrogen determined by Kjeldahl Method, biodegradable nitrogen determined by Kjeldahl Method, total nitrogen determined by $F{\"{o}}rster$ Method and biodegradable nitrogen determined by $F{\"{o}}rster$ Method one another.
BACKGROUND: In this study, we evaluated the effects of soil incorporation of hairy vetch (HV) or ryeas a green manure on the growth and yields of watermelon and soil nitrate nitrogen in a green house.. METHODS AND RESULTS: HV and rye were cultivated for 151 days after sowing on October 30th and incorporated into soil before transplanting watermelon. The amount of N added by soil incorporation of HV and rye were 79 kg/ha and 88 kg/ha, respectively. Five different N treatments for each of HV and rye were included as follows: green manure, green manure with urea at 25%, 50%or 75%, and 100% ureafor the N recommendation rate. The growth and fruit yield of watermelon were not different among the treatments of both HV and rye. Soil nitrate N content at both HV and rye treatments decreased continuously with the lapse of days after planting (DAP) and was lowest at 75 DAP: 44 mg/kg and 52 mg/kg the for the HV and rye treatment without urea, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the N mineralized from the soil incorporated HV or rye accounts for an important portion of N available for the growth and fruit yield of watermelon. It can be suggested that the green manures, comparable to ureacould ensure the yield of watermelon, if soil nitrate N content isabove 40 mg/kg by soil incorporation of HV and rye during watermelon cultivation. However, further studies on the relationship between soil nitrate N content during cultivation periods and the fruit yield of watermelon are required.
Rapeseed meal, which is a byproduct of rapeseed oil extraction, improves crop productivity by supplying nutrients to the soil. The present study aimed to manufacture fermented rapeseed meal compost using two effective microbial agents and evaluate their efficiency as fertilizer. To types of fermented rapeseed meal, manufactured using either a bio-carrier or microbial agent, showed no differences in pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total nitrogen content. However, the contents of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ as inorganic nitrogen were increased by 5.6 times and 1.5 times, respectively, after 5 d of fermentation. Rapeseed meal fermented for 5 d was applied to tomato a basal fertilizer and after eight weeks, the plant height increased in all fermented rapeseed treatments compared to that in the chemical fertilizer treatment, and also the quantum yield of photosystem II (PS II) showed the same trend. The total nitrogen content of tomato leaves treated with a microbial fermented rapeseed meal was twice as high as that of that treated with a chemical fertilizer. It was confirmed that the increase in the tomato height was an effect of the rapeseed meal containing inorganic nitrogen, which can easily be absorbed by plants. From these results, it is considered that fermented rapeseed meal manufactured with an effective microbial agent for 5 d showed the highest inorganic nutrient content and greatest growth enhancement in tomato.
Organic ginseng farming has rapidly increased in response to consumer demand for a safe product which improves health. Differences in soil nutrient concentration and ginsenoside content between organic and conventional ginseng farming have, however, not yet been properly studied. Therefore the aim of the present study was to compare soil nutrient concentration and ginsenoside content between these two farming systems. $NO_3-N$, $P_2O_5$, and K were significantly different between organic and conventional ginseng farming. The total content of ginsenoside and individual ginsenoside components were higher in organically grown ginseng than in ginseng from conventional farming, although there is no significant difference. Particularly, protopanaxadiol saponins were higher than protopanaxatriol saponins in ginseng from organic farming compared to ginseng produced by conventional farming. $NO_3-N$ content in soils showed a negative correlation with the content of ginsenosides $Rb_2$ and Rd. In addition, $P_2O_5$ showed a negative correlation with ginsenosides $Rb_1$, Rc, and PD/PT ratio. Organic matter showed a positive crrelation with ginsenosides Re. To increase the ginsenoside content of ginseng, we recommend increasing organic matter and decreasing $NO_3-N$ and $P_2O_5$ contents in the soil.
