This paper investigates the effects of excavation-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions of different soil and structural characteristics. The response of four and two-story block structures, which are subjected to excavation-induced advancing ground movements, are investigated in different soil conditions using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis are modelled to have cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four and two-story block structures are investigated with advancing ground movement phases and compared with the response of structures which are subjected to excavation-induced total ground movement. The response of structures is compared among others in terms of the magnitude and shape of deformations and cracks in structures for different structure and ground conditions. The results of the comparison provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to excavation-induced ground movements.
This paper holds three objects. The first is to analyze surveys of concerning zone and promotion department. The data were collected through an examination of construction excavated in coastal soft (marine) clay and measurements obtained during excavating construction. The second is to observe the appropriate selection and the application of support system on earth retaining wall in soft clay. Lateral deformation behavior during the excavating construction according to the differences in a soft ground pressuring degree was investigated. The third is to compare the results with those of numerical analysis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of lateral deformation when soft ground improvement for the expansion of infrastructure in object of study zone has been incompleted. Also, it is to identify the relationship between the degree of consolidation of soft ground and lateral deformation, in a method of displacement quantity in compliance with the numerical analysis and a quatitative analysis. In conclusion, displacement of excavated section after consolidation was fewer 60% averagely than section under consolidation.
During tunnel excavation in urban area a systematic monitoring is important for the purpose of determination of support type and quantity, as well as for the control of stability of both surface structures and the tunnel itself due to the frequently, and in many cases, abruptly changing ground condition. In Austria absolute displacement monitoring methods have replaced relative displacement measurements by geodetic methods to a large extent. Prompt detection of weak ground ahead of the tunnel face as well as better adjustment of excavation and support to the geotechnical conditions is possible with the help of the improved methods of data evaluation on sites. Deformation response of the ground to excavation starts ahead of the tunnel face, therefore, the deformation and state of the tunnel advance core is the key factor of the whole deformation process after excavation. In other words, the rigidity and state of the advance core play a determining role in the stability of both surface structures and the tunnel itself. This paper presents the results from detailed three-dimensional numerical studies, exploring vertical displacements, vector orientations and extrusions on tunnel face during the progressive advancement for the shallow tunnel in various geotechnical conditions.

Even if the various data analyzing methods were suggested to examine the measured slope behaviors, it is difficult to find methods or procedures for connecting the analyzed results of slope stability and measured slope data. This research suggests the analyzing methods combing the stability analysis and measured data based on progressive failure of slope. Slope failure analysis by time degradation were calculated by strength parameters composed of strength reduction coefficients, also which were compared to the measured data according to the variations of safety factor and displacement of slopes. The accumulated displacement curve were shown as 3rd degree polynomials by suggested procedures, which was the same as before researches. The reverse displacement velocity curves were shown as linear function for prediction of brittle slope failures, also they were shown as 3rd degree polynomials for ductile slope failures, which were the same as the suggested equation by Fukuzono (1985) and they were very similar behaviors to the in-situ failure cases.
The failure of footing generally involves the concentration of deformation into one or more narrow bands. With the displacement of the footing, the failure plane will subsequently form The purpose of this paper is to assess the capabilities of numerical techniques to predict bearing capacity and progressive failure of footings. By using the method of large deformation theory and strain softening we have investigated the progressive failure of strip footing on undrained clay. This paper describes the procedure to predict the entire loadfisplacement curve and the failure mechanism of strip footing. The presented results show that it is Possible to analyze the Post Peak behavior of strip footing numerically and to give a progressive failure mechanism clearly.
As the occurrence of ground subsidence near the excavation site increases recently, studies are being conducted to predict the possibility of ground subsidence prior to excavation. In this study, the ground subsidence risk rating for pre-excavation (GSRp) developed by the previous study was applied to actual excavation sites to verify its applicability. The final results for the evaluation of the ground subsidence risk level for five excavation sites revealed that GSRp scores were calculated between 40 and 79 points and classified mainly into grades II (Good Ground)~III (Fair Ground). In order to verify the evaluation method, the obtained GSRp grades were compared with the measured horizontal displacements. The horizontal displacements measured in five excavation sites were between 25% and 47% of the allowable displacement, which were well agreed with the low subsidence risk level obtained from GSRp calculation. It is expected that the GSRp method can be used as an evaluation tool for predicting the risk of ground subsidence before excavation if GSRp is verified and supplemented through the additional research for the poor soil with the high risk of ground subsidence.

In congested urban areas, constructions of tunnel structures have became necessary due to a lack of surface space. The excavation of any tunnel generated the ground disturbances of surrounding ground and displacements is major concern. Therefore, a study of tunnel stability is necessary. In this study, the authors have investigated the stability and failure pattern of tunnel through the model tunnel test. In this study, the close range photogrammetry was used to measure the ground deformation. The measured data was converted to displacement vectors and contours. And then it compared to FE analysis and empirical formula. In addition, this study presented the comparison between steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and unreinforced model tunnel. The ground deformation for both the steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and the unreinforced model tunnel was analysed.
The ground movements during three. full-scale trial diaphragm wall (DW) panel constructions were monitored and analysed. The DW panels were constructed in reclaimed fill where sedimentary marine deposit and residual weathered soils are being consolidated. The monitoring data showed exceptionally large lateral ground movements of up to 293 mm near a trench due to the DW panel constructions, which is about 0.8$\%$ D, where D is the maximum excavation depth. It was observed that deliberate holding period of the trench resulted in a significant increase in the lateral ground movements of about 50-225$\%$. A pre-treatment of the marine deposit by installing a single line of jet grout columns around the trench prior to the excavation was found to be a very effective way of reducing the ground movements. The measured ground settlements were compared with some relevant case histories. DW panel constructions in sedimentary marine deposit are likely to cause maximum ground surface settlement up to 0.225$\%$ D.
has been much progress in theories and construction techniques to secure the stability of the underground structures. Recently, several studios have shown that it is possible to predict the existence of discontinuities ahead of a tunnel face by analyzing 3-dimensional absolute displacements measured during tunnel excavation. This paper concentrated on the development of a methodology to predict the existence and location of the discontinuities, or the void space(abandoned mine) , by performing 3-dimensional FEM analysis and considering the stress relocation caused by arching effect during excavation. Also, this study tried to verify deformation for choosing the most suitable support system. The results of this study might provide a way of safer and economical tunnel construction by utilizing the in-situ monitoring data.

In this paper the failure of Carsington Dam was discussed based on the informations reported in the first edition of Korean Geotechnical Society News. The causes of dam failure and its influences were evaluated based on the results of the slope stability analysis. The effects of the shear strain pre-existing in the yellow clay disclosed by the post-failure site investigation and the progressive nature of the dam failure were preponderantly evaluated. Stability analysis was performed based on the proposed values of strength parameters characterizing possible field ground conditions at failure. The calculated safety factors were evaluated for different cases of strength parameters in order to find the most probable field ground condition at the dam failue.
