  • The purpose of this study was to compare the vocal characteristics of 40 adults with and without cerebral palsy (CP), upon presentation of three speech tasks (i.e., reading, chanting, and singing). The Praat program was utilized to generate data on fundamental frequency, voice intensity, jitter, and shimmer. The results of the analysis revealed no significant differences on fundamental frequency and intensity. However, both groups showed significant decreases in jitter and shimmer when engaged in singing tasks. The analysis of group differences indicated that adults with CP showed significantly higher variation scores on jitter and shimmer than the group without CP, and the difference on jitter and shimmer became greater during rhythmic chanting. In terms of jitter variation, the interaction effects according to the groups and types of speech tasks were greater, demonstrating the differences between the two groups. This study can be utilized as a basic research, regarding changes in vocal characteristics of adults with CP according to different musical speech tasks.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare voice parameters in auditory conditions (normal/noise/music) between a teacher group and a control group. Results of statistical analysis showed that the teacher group had higher jitter (%) and shimmer (%) values than the control group. It indicated that the teacher group had larger variations in pitch and dynamic of their voice. In the teacher group, the voice under noisy condition showed a higher value of fundamental frequency than that under normal condition. though its fundamental frequency did not show any significant difference between the noisy condition and the musical condition. In the control group, however, although the voice under noisy condition also showed a higher value of fundamental frequency than that under normal condition, its fundamental frequency was significantly different between the noisy condition and the musical condition.

  • Mean F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and NHR were measured in 21 opera singers, 13 Korean traditional 'pansori' singers, and 21 non-singers. Four voice sampling conditions were ordinary /α/ prolongation, /α/ prolongation using vocal technique as if the subjects were singing, oral reading of the words of a song, and singing. One-way ANOVA and Sheffe post-hoc analysis were used to identify significant differences among the groups. The mean F0 was significantly different among the 3 groups in all conditions except for the ordinary /α/ prolongation condition. The opera singers produced lower jitter and NHR compared to 'pansori' singers and non-singers only in the singing condition.

  • This study aimed to investigate the clinical utility of voiced sentence tasks for voice evaluation. To this end, we analyzed the correlation between perturbation-based acoustic measurements [jitter percent (jitter), shimmer percent (shimmer), Noise to Harmonic Ratio (NHR)] using sustained vowel phonation, and cepstrum-based acoustic measurements [Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP), Low/High spectral ratio (L/H ratio)] using voiced sentences. As a result of analyzing data collected from 65 patients with voice disorders, there was a significant correlation between the CPP and jitter (r = -.624, p = .000), shimmer (r = -.530, p = .000), NHR (r = -.469, p = .000).This suggests that the cepstrum measurement of voiced sentences can be used as an alternative to the analysis limitations of the pathological voice such as not possible perturbation-based acoustic measurement, and result difference according to the analysis section.

  • It is very important to predict the nonlinear behavior of combustion instability such as transition phenomena and limit cycle amplitude for fully understanding and controlling the instabilities. These nonlinear instability characteristics are highly dependent upon the flames' nonlinear dynamics in a gas turbine premixed combustor. In this study, nonlinear instability TA(Thermo-acoustic) models were introduced by applying the concept of flame describing function to the thermoacoustic analysis method. As a result of model development, for a given combustor length, the growth rate of instability was greatly affected by the change in amplitude, although the instability frequency was not. Further researches under various operating conditions and model validation on limit cycle amplitude are required.

  • Effects of the different strengths and intervals of the periodic outer water intrusions (kyuchos and bottom intrusions) on the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass in a small embayment were examined with a simple numerical model. Environmental conditions of Kitanada Bay in the Bungo Channel were applied to the model. As the interval of the intrusion became longer and the amplitude became smaller, phytoplankton biomass In the bay became higher. On the other hand, as the interval became shorter and the amplitude became larger, the growth rate of the phytoplankton became higher. It suggested that when the intrusion was weaker, water exchange of the bay decreased and the phytoplankton in the bay accumulated at a high density, When water exchange was improved by active intrusions, availability of light would become more efficient and the growth rate of the phytoplankton was enhanced.

  • Voice issues such as voice weakness that arise with age can have social and emotional impacts, potentially leading to feelings of isolation and depression. This study aimed to investigate the changes in acoustic characteristics resulting from aging, focusing on voice quality and spoken fluency. To this end, tasks involving sustained vowel phonation and paragraph reading were recorded for 20 elderly and 20 young participants. Voice-quality-related variables, including F0, jitter, shimmer, and Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) values, were analyzed along with speech-fluency-related variables, such as average syllable duration (ASD), articulation rate (AR), and speech rate (SR). The results showed that in voice quality-related measurements, F0 was higher for the elderly and voice quality was diminished, as indicated by increased jitter, shimmer, and lower CPP levels. Speech fluency analysis also demonstrated that the elderly spoke more slowly, as indicated by all ASD, AR, and SR measurements. Correlation analysis between voice quality and speech fluency showed a significant relationship between shimmer and CPP values and between ASD and SR values. This suggests that changes in spoken fluency can be identified early by measuring the variations in voice quality. This study further highlights the reciprocal relationship between voice quality and spoken fluency, emphasizing that deterioration in one can affect the other.

  • This study intends to document the existing cyclical fluctuations of garic and onion price at farm gate level during the period of 1966-1986 in Korea. The existing patterns of such cyclical fluctuations were estimated systematically by removing the seasonal fluctuation and irregular movement as well as secular trend from the original price through the moving average method. It was found that the cyclical fluctuations of garic and onion prices repeated six and seven times respectively during the same period, also the amplitude coefficient of cyclical fluctuations showed speed up in recent years. It was noticed that the cyclical fluctuations of price in onion was higher than that of in garic.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of semi-closed vocal training-based Vocal Aerobic Treatment on the voice improvement of soprano. Study subject was one soprano who appealed to the suffering of her voice problem due to vocal cord nodule. A study method of conducting pre/post acoustic evaluation and subjective voice evaluation to compare the measures was used; Vocal Aerobic Treatment was carried out twice a week for a total of 32 session. In the acoustic evaluation, MDVP (multi-dimensional voice program) and VRP (voice range profile) were used to evaluate the pitch, voice quality, and voice range; in the subjective voice evaluation, SVHI (singing voice handicap index) was used to assess voice satisfaction. As a result of the pitch evaluation, the soprano maintained a proper Fo. As a result of the voice quality evaluation, the jitter, shimmer, and the noise harmonic ratio numbers decreased compared to the numbers shown before the treatment. As a result of the voice range evaluation, the scope of the range was broadened, with the number of semitone increasing from 30 to 35. As for the subjective voice evaluation, the result of the total score obtained after the survey report divided by the number of questions showed a decrease from 3.6 to 0.6. The soprano herself reported of having a minor extent of a voice problem. The summary of the above results reflects that Vocal Aerobic Treatment is useful in the voice improvement of vocalists However, as this study is case research regarding the Vocal Aerobic Treatment effect on one soprano, further research on the treatment effect covering many other vocalists is necessary. Also, there is a need for follow-up studies regarding voice management and voice treatment program on not only the vocalists but also the voice users in many other professions.

  • Background and Objectives : Voice perturbation measures, such as jitter and shimmer has been importantly used for diagnosis and treatment efficacy of laryngeal dysfunction. This study was conducted to investigate validity of newly developed multi-channel voice analyzer program by comparing with MDVP, PRAAT, TF32. In addition, we compared the voice perturbation measures with different voice analyzer program by type of signals. Materials and Methods : Nineteen mild-severe dysphonic patients participated in our study. Fundamental frequency, jitter and shimmer values were obtained from different voice analyzer program using the same sustained/ah/phonation. Results : Fundamental frequency and shimmer were highly correlated whereas jitter was weakly correlated between newly developed multi-channel voice analyzer program and the others though different pitch computation algorithm except MDVP, In addition, Type 2 and 3 signals were weakly correlated than Type 1. Conclusion : In the clinical setting, clinician may have sufficient information of voice analyzer and control conditions properly for severity of pathologic voice before voice perturbation measure to obtain reliable results.
