  • Non-nucleus Abalone half pearls were cultured by a new technique and their structural characteristics were analyzed using an electron microscopy. This technique was found to grow the pearls depending on the shape of the internal organ of an abalone because this technique induces the pearl layers without adding any nucleus on the specified damage region of a shell. The obtained pearls exhibit natural shapes with a specific luster. The SEM analysis shows that the pearl layers are about $0.34{\mu}m$ with an uniform thickness and the surface of the shell is characterized by the pyramid-shaped bulge with a regular arrangement, which is a typical feature of single-shell. These characteristics of the pearls are thought to develop in the highly-valued Korean gems.

• Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been found as a promising new forage crop of higher quality and yield in Korea since 1985. The objective of the study was to select preemergence herbicides for weed control in growing pearl millet in order to reduce production cost and with increased yields. Propazine (Milogard 4L) was the best in controlling weeds without its phytotoxicity at the standard application rate, and with the highest survival rate of seedlings of peal millet "Suwon 1" hybrid. Sprayings with Atrazine and Simazine caused lower survival rate of peal millet and with their light phytotoxicity as compared with manual weeding and Propazine spraying. Alachlor killed pearl millet seedlings almost completely. Pendimethalin also was not good for weed control of peal millet due to its severe phytotoxicity and with very low survival rate of pearl millet seedlings.

  • This paper is a case study on regional linkages of producer services in Chinju region. Producer service appeared as the most rapid growth sector in service industry. In Chinju region. manufacturing firms purchase generalized producer service within the region. However the higher-order service, they demand; the remoter metropolis especially Seoul, they depend on. Linkage patterns among manufacturing sectors are similar; but then the firms whose managers are from Chinju or Gyeong-nam region had stronger regional linkages than others. Public institute such as Chamber of Commerce & Industry, University Research Institute of Industrial Technology. Korea Technology Credit Guarantee Fund, Korea Silk Research Institute have made important role as suppliers of public producer services in Chinju Region. As present stage, their services of industrial technology, fiancing, and information are not only fit regional demand but also spatially limited within region. The facts that large firms purchase high-order services from other region and small firms have not good demand of producer service suggest regional policy implication about supplying relevant producer service in the region.

  • The patterns in X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy provide useful clue at $29.4^{\circ}$ to discriminate two types of Akoya cultured pearl which occurs difference of surface luster. Using the optical microscope, we could be confirmed that the nareous layer of each sample consist of different crystal form. In Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy analysis, the nareous layer of Akoya cultured pearls with poor luster shows some peaks at 712, 699, 1435, $1444cm^{-1}$ region and these peaks depend on the Calcite. But the nareous layer of pearls with excellent luster could not observed those peaks related with Calcite, we could observed Aragonite band at 699, $1085cm^{-1}$ region. Though this result, we know that the nareous layer of Akoya cultured pearls with excellent luster is mainly composed by Aragonite. Raman bands are also clearly demonstrated to occur difference of band intensity by difference of Aragonite content. In the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis, we found that the Akoya cultured pearl luster and surface condition is associated with internal structure.

  • Perlite, a hydrated volcanic glass, occurs mainly as a bed-like body, and is distributed intermittently along the unconformity surface between the Beomgockri Group and its lower formations, viz. Janggi Group. The perlite is intimately associated with surrounding pumiceous welded tuff and rhyodacites in space and time. Compared to the typical perlite, the perlite is rather silica-poor and impure, and thus, includes lots of phenocrysts and rock fragments. Nearly the perlite is compositionally rather close to a pitchstone than a perlite in water contents. Petrographic comparison between perlite and associated volcanic to volcaniclastic rocks indicates that pumiceous welded tuff and rhyodacite seem to be Protolith of the Perlite. A Zr/$TiO_{2}$-Nb/Y diagram and field occurrence of perlite and their protolithic rocks also conforms the above interpretation. Kn addition, remnant vesicles in perlite strongly reflect that the precursor of perlitic glass appeared to be pumice fragment as well as volcanic glass. The perlite was diagenetically formed by way of a pervasive water-rock interaction at the deposition of the Manghaesan Formation in lacustrine environment. During perlitization, $SiO_{2}$ and alkali tend to be consistently depleted. Preexisting system of the Beomgockri Group based on the perlite formation should be corrected, because the perlite was formed diagenetically without lateral persistence in its occurrence.

  • It is very difficult to detect irradiated South Sea cultured pearls (SSCPs) at a low dose by gemological methods (e.g. optical transmission method, microscopic examination, UV fluorescence reaction, and so on). In this study, however, it was possible to distinguish between irradiated SSCPs from un-irradiated SSCPs by ESR analysis. We have analyzed the pearl nacre and nucleus by separating them for the purposed of providing information about the change of $CO^-_2$ radical as growing absorbed doses. And it was found out that the signal of $CO^-_2$ radical of the nacre is more distinct than the nucleus.

  • In this study, historical and cultural landscapes were reviewed focusing on Mangjinsan Mountain in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, and the scenic value was examined through this. First, Mangjinsan Mountain was noted in history, as Ansan(案山, a mountain on the opposite side of a housing/grave site) in Jinju, where Bongsu(烽燧, the beacon fire station) is located. Information on Mangjinsan Mountain was gradually doubled due to its status, and the beacon fire station of Mangjinsan Mountain was in charge of defending the Jinju area. Mangjinsan Mountain was described as a symbolic landscape of Jinju. Regarding the etymology of Mangjinsan Mountain, Sung Yeo-Sin(成汝信) analyzed the geography of Jinju and suggested that it was a place name originating from the phoenix. However, looking at various records, it is confirmed that the name of Mangjinsan Mountain is maintained uniformly, but the inscription is not unified. Second, Mangjinsan Mountain became one of the major stage for the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and in 1597. It is confirmed to be a place which has joys and sorrows, for that it provided an opportunity to win the Siege of Jinju in 1592, but many casualties occurred in 1597. On the other hand, in the area of Mangjinsan Mountain Byeolseo(別墅), temples, and administrative facilities were located to establish cultural history of the time, and in the 19th century, Manggyeongdae Pavilion was built due to the scenic value of viewing Jinju Castle. These are examples of testimony how Mangjinsan Mountain has an important meaning in Jinju's history and culture. Third, in the late Joseon Dynasty, a poem reciting Mangjinsan Mountain appears, which shows that the Mountain has established itself as a scenic site in Jinju. The description of Mangjinsan Mountain is confirmed in the literature that lists the scenic sites of Jinju. On the other hand, writers who lived in Jinju paid attention to the beacon fire station, singing about the peaceful world without war and looking back the history. In the 19th century, Jeonbyeolyeon(a farewell party) was held, which seems to be the result of the beauty of viewing Jinju and overviewing the area. Through the facts, the symbolism and scenic value of Mangjinsan Mountain in Jinju were confirmed.

  • A seasonal circulation patterns in the Chinju Bay (CB) were suggested from the observed data at two channels of the Noryang Channel (NC) and the Daebang Channel (DC) during the period from 2005 to 2008. The water circulation in the CB is mainly controlled through the NC and the DC. In winter, tidal current at the surface layer of the NC flows from the Kwangyang Bay (KB) eastward into the CB, whereas the current at the bottom layer flows from the CB westward into the KB. In summer, tidal current at the surface layer of the NC goes from the CB westward into the KB. The flow system at the NC shows the typical pattern of thermohaline circulation. In spring, tidal current at the surface layer of the eastern part of the DC flows out into southeastern open ocean. However, in summer, the current in the western part of the DC flows into the CB through the DC. Also, the velocity in the western part of DC is 50~70 cm/sec stronger than that in the eastern part. To obtain better understanding on the seasonal circulation pattern in the NC and the DC, additionally the detailed studies on the field measurements and three dimensional numerical modeling are needed.
