  • With increasing needs in power, Singapore is requiring stronger power transmission. Singapore Transmission Cable Tunnel is underground tunnel for transmission system installation such as 400 kV cable. This Transmission Cable Tunnel is 35 km long in total. The North-South Transmission Cable Tunnel is 18.5 km long and there is a total of three (3) contracts; NS1, NS2 and NS3 in respect of the design and construction. The East-West Transmission Cable Tunnel is 16.5 km long, and also there is a total of three (3) contracts; EW1, EW2 and EW3. Among of them, SK E&C has been awarded and operating contract EW2 and NS2. In scope of works, each contract has 3 to 4 shafts which connect aboveground and underground high volt cable and those shafts are used as TBM launching shafts during construction. Transmission Cable Tunnel is undercrossing middle of Singapore and most of shafts are located in urban area. Thus, optimal blasting design satisfying high blasting efficiency as well as blasting vibration limit of Singapore is highly required. Blasting design for large shaft of Singapore Transmission Cable Tunnel follows blasting vibration limits in Singapore and reflects our blasting engineering skills. With Singapore Transmission Cable Tunnel Contract EW2, it is expected that our excellent blasting engineering and performance skills can be delivered to the world.

  • The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.

  • The incompressible viscous flow past a sphere under forced oscillation is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number of 300. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the sphere oscillating vertically to the streamwise direction. There are two important variables to characterize the oscillating state of a sphere. One is an oscillating amplitude normalized by the sphere diameter is set as a fixed number of 0.2. Another is the frequency ratio which is defined by $f_e/f_o$, where fe and fo are the excited frequency and the natural frequency of vortex shedding for the stationary sphere. In this study, three different frequency ratios of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 are considered. The results show a periodic flow with hairpin vortices shedding from upper and lower positions as well as vortical legs obliquely extended by oscillating motion of sphere. The enveloping vortical structure experience rupture twice in one period of oscillation. As the frequency of oscillation is increased, the vortical legs are getting shorter and eventually the hairpin vortices are much closer to the adjacent one.
