  • The purpose of this study is to improve the prediction ability of the atomization and vaporization processes of GDI spray under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Several models have been introduced and compared. The atomization process was modeled using hybrid breakup model that is composed of Conical Sheet Disintegration (CSD) model and Aerodynamically Progressed TAB(APTAB) model. The vaporization process was modeled using Spalding model, modified Spalding model and Abramzon & Sirignano model. Exciplex fluorescence method was used for comparing the calculated with the experimental results. The experiment and calculation were performed at the ambient pressure of 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa and the ambient temperature of 473k. Comparison of caldulated and experimental spray characteristics was carried out and Abramzon & Sirignano model and modified Spalding model had the better prediction ability for vaporization process than Spalding model.

  • This paper described the effect of dual clutch transmissions on the stability emissions characteristic in a GDI engine at vehicle Inspection and Maintenance(I/M) program. In order to investigate the influence of direct injection gasoline engine with DCT, the experimental apparatus consisted of GDI engine with 4 cylinder, dynamometer and exhaust emissions analyzer. Analyzed emission gas include CO, HC and NOx results that DCT vehicle in the case of NOx, HC in automatic transmission vehicles less than 1/2 level was confirmed to be exhausted. However vehicle specific power increases CO also has increased.

  • The spray characteristics of a high pressure 6-hole injector were examined in a single cylinder optical direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. The effects of injection timing, in-cylinder charge motion, fuel injection pressure and coolant temperature were investigated using the 2-dimensional Mie scattering technique. It was confirmed that the in-cylinder charge motion played a major role in the fuel spray distribution during the induction stroke while the propagation of fuel spray was restrained during the compression stroke by the increasing pressure and the upward moving piston. In additions, it was confirmed that the liquid fuel droplets existing at the sprays edges were vaporized by the increase of the coolant temperature.

  • This paper described the effect of split injections on the stability of combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection gasoline engine at various operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of direct injection gasoline engine, the fuel injection timing was varied direct fuel injection at various fuel pressure. The experimental apparatus consisted of GDI engine with 4 cylinder, EC dynamometer, injection control system, and exhaust emissions analyzer. The emission and combustion characteristics were analyzed for the fuel injection timing and fuel injection pressure strategies. It is revealed that CO and HC emissions are dramatically decreased at advanced injection timing. Also, engine performance is increased at increase fuel injection pressure.

Atomization process is modeled using hybrid model that is composed of Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization (LISA) model and Aerodynamically Progressed TAB (APTAB) model. Vaporization process is modeled using Spalding model and Abramzon & Sirignano model. To obtain the experimental results for comparing with calculated results, the cross-sectional images of liquid and vapor phases and SMD distribution were acquired by exciplex fluorescence method and Phase Doppler Analyzer respectively. The experiment and computation was performed at the ambient pressure of 0.1 MPa, 0.5 MPa, 1.0 MPa and the ambient temperature of 293K, 473K. The calculated results by modified KIVA-II code show good agreement with experimental results.

  • This study has focused on using fuel injections as variables for measuring performance and reducing exhaust gas in turbo-charger diesel engine. In experiments, we changed nozzle hole diameter, diameter of an injection pipe, and injection timing as variable. The results show that torque. fuel consumption and smoke are reduced as nozzle hole diameter decreases, while NOx increases. When the diameter of injector is reduced, torque, fuel consumption and smoke are deteriorated, but NOx is decreased. In addition, when the time for injection is advanced. torque, fuel consumption and smoke are improved, but the density of NOx is increased.

  • This paper describes numerical study of combustion characteristics in CNG(compressed natural gas) DI(direct injection) engine using gaseous sphere injection model. Simulations were conducted using KIVA-3V Release 2 code. Gaseous sphere injection model, which is modified model of liquid fuel injection, was used to simulate the CNG direct injection. Until now, a very fine mesh smaller than the injector nozzle has been required to resolve the gas-jet inflow boundary. However, the gaseous sphere injection model simulates gaseous fuel injection using a coarse mesh. This model injects gaseous spheres as in liquid fuel injection and the gaseous spheres evaporate together without the latent heat of evaporation. Therefore, it does not require a very fine mesh and reduce calculation time. Combustion simulation were performed under various injection timings and injection pressures.

  • The objective of this study is to examine a DI(Direct Injection) gasoline spray development process under different ambient pressures using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). fuel spray experiments were performed within a constant volume chamber. The spray structure, velocity maps, velocity and vorticity contours were obtained to investigate its spray characteristics. It was found that higher ambient pressure has a significant effect on radial growth of the spray. The position which has a maximum velocity moved from the spray edge to the spray center as ambient pressure was increased. Higher ambient pressure moved a maximum vorticity position upward of the spray.
