Platinum nanoparticles loading on carbon nanotube was carried out by impregnation of hexachloro platinate(IV) from hydrogen hexachloro platinate(IV) hydrate dissolved solution without using reduction agents, and heating the hexachloro platinate(IV) impregnated carbon nanotube up to $400^{\circ}C$. The amounts of impregnated hexachloro platinate(IV) on to carbon nanotube were measured with UV-visible spectrophotometer. The TG, XRD, and TEM analysis were performed to confirm the platinum particles loading and distribution on carbon nanotube. The average platinum particles size on carbon nanotube was under 2 nm by heating the hexachloro platinate(IV) up to $400^{\circ}C$ in spite of non-using reduction agents, while the average size increased due to the agglomeration of some particles by heating them up to $800^{\circ}C$. Therefore, uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles loading on carbon nanotube can be obtained from simple impregnation of hexachloro platinate(IV) from solution and heating it up to $400^{\circ}C$.
${\alpha}$-Waxy corn starch was used as a feed for twin-screw extrusion in order to enhance starch liquefaction with added thermostable ${\alpha}$-amylase (derived from Bacillus licheniformis). The residence time distribution and starch liquefaction were investigated. The starch liquefaction was analyzed in terms of reducing sugar contents, molecular size from gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and microstructure from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The use of ${\alpha}$-starch contributed to the production of more reducing sugar than the use of raw starch use alone. From GPC, the effect of ${\alpha}$- starch on the molecular size reduction was shown to be small. From SEM, irregular and damaged surface were observed on the extrudate from ${\alpha}$-starch, as compared to those from raw starch. The spread of residence time distribution curves was greater with feed of ${\alpha}$-starch than raw starch, indicating that ${\alpha}$-starch was hard to flow forward during extrusion. This could be improved by increasing the feed moisture content and barrel temperature of extruder.
Reduction activity of precious metal-loaded HZSM-5 for NO has been studied and was compared to that of Cu-HZSM-5 in the presence of excess oxygen. It was found that among the catalysts used in this study, Ru-HZSM-5 was the most active catalyst for the reduction of NO to $N_2$ in the absence of hydrocarbon reductant. The highest conversion obtained was 45%. No severe inhibition of water vapor to the reduction was observed. It is suggested that the higher catalytic activity of Ru-HZSM-5 may result from the better ability to oxidize NO to $NO_2$ in the presence of excess oxygen. A proposed reaction mechanism for the reduction of NO to $N_2$ in the presence of excess oxygen is that NO is oxidized to $NO_2$ on the surface of Ru-HZSM-5 catalyst and the adsorbed $NO_2$ on the surface is then decomposed to $N_2$. $NO_2$ is supposed to the reaction.
Copper-containig enzyme, laccase (Rhus vernicifera) was immobilized onto gold electrode using self-assembly technique and its surface properties and catalytic activities were examined. Laccase is an oxidoreductase capable to oxidize diphenols or diamines by 4-electron reduction of molecular oxygen without superoxide or peroxide intermediates. The electrode surface were modified by $\beta-mercaptopropionate$ to have a net negative charge in neutral solution and positively charged laccase (pI=9) was immobilized by electrostatic interaction. The successful immobilization was confirmed by cyclic voltammograms which showed typical surface-confined shapes and behaviors. The amount of charge to reduce the surface was similar to the charge calculated assuming the surface being covered by monolayer. The activity of the immobilized enzyme was tested by the capbility of oxidizing a substrate, ABTS (2,2-azine-bis-(3-ethylbenzthioline-6-sulfonic acid) and it was maintained for $2\~3$ days at $4^{\circ}C$. The immobilzed laccase showed about $10\~15\%$ activity compared to that in solution. The laccase-modified electrode showed the activity of elefoocatalytic reduction of oxygen in the presence of mediator, $Fe(CN)_6^{3-}$ The addtion of azide which is an inhibitor of laccase compeletly eliminated the catalytic current.
To enlarge application field of electrolyzed acid-water(EAW) on food industry, the changes of EAW properties by storage conditions and heating were investigatet. It was showed that storing EAW in closed container is mon effective to keep up the oxidation-reduction potentials(ORP), hyperchloride content and pH than stored in opened ones. ORP of EAW stored in closed container could be kept mon than 1 month as 1,150 mV levels. Ruing heating from 2$0^{\circ}C$ to 95$^{\circ}C$, ORP was increased to 1,150 mV levels at 95$^{\circ}C$ after gradual decrease to 5$0^{\circ}C$. Tyrosinase activity was decreased approximately to 26%~35% in EAW having a 950 mV~1,140 mV ORP. Also it was confirmed that EAW has anti-browning effect as sliced apple and potato, and their juices treated with EAW had conspicous difference in their $\Delta$E value. 12 kinds of pesticides such as aldrine, capful diazinon, diedrin, $\alpha$-endosulfan $\beta$-endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, endrin, $\alpha$-BHC, o,p'-DDT, procymidone, PCNB added in EAW were recovered from ND~73.6% comparing to ones added in distilled water. The recovered amounts of pesticides, procymidone and diazinon in lettuce after soaking in EAW were 1.12 ppm and ND, compared with those of amounts soaked in distilled water were 3.67 ppm and 3.05 ppm respectively. So, it seems that EAW has potentials to promote the degradation of pesticides.
Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is a greenhouse material which is hard to remove. Even with a catalytic process it requires a reaction temperature, at least, higher than 670 K. This study has been performed to see the effects of Ce addition to the mixed oxide catalyst which shows the highest activity in decomposing $N_2O$ completely at temperature as low as 473 K when CO is used as a reducing agent. Mixed metal oxide(MMO) catalyst was made through co-precipitation process with small amount of Ce added to the base components of Co, Al and Rh or Pd. Consequently, the surface area of the catalyst decreased with the contents of Ce, and the catalytic activity of direct decomposition of $N_2O$ also decreased. However, in the presence of CO, the activity was found high enough to compensate the portion of activity decrease by Ce addition, so that it can be ascertained that the catalytic activity and stability can be maintained in the CO involved $N_2O$ reduction system when Ce is added for the physical stability of the catalyst.
Onions were treated with different amounts of sulfur (S) during cultivation and examined for their physicochemical properties and flavor. Onions cultivated without S application were the control group; the treatment groups were grown in soil that had been pretreated with S and received additional S applications or four times before harvest. As the number of S applications increased, the levels of crude protein, quantified with total nitrogen; ash, approximating total amounts of minerals; and dietary fiber of the onions tended to increase. The mineral compositions also improved, with noticeable increases in the levels of Mg, K, Fe, and Zn. In particular, the reducing capacity of the onions increased appreciably (p<0.05), without increases in the levels of S-containing compounds such as thiosulfinate or S-containing amino acids. Nevertheless, the spicy hot taste and flavor, which is generated mainly from S-containing compounds, were perceived more strongly in the onions that had received more S applications.
Cryogel and aerogel Pt-Ru/C were synthesized by the sol-gel process for the electrooxidation of methanol. From XRD analysis, it was found that the catalysts had highly dispersed Pt-Ru alloys on carbon support although high temperature treatments have been conducted. Electrocatalytic activities of 3 type aerogel catalysts were investigated in half cell experiments by cyclic voltammetry. Among them, Phloroglucinol-Formaldehyde(PF) type catalyst shows the highest activity. From the results of deactivation test for each catalysts, the aerogel catalysts are found to have excellent durability compared with those prepared by colloidal method.
The Pt-Ru electrocatalyst was Prepared on Nafion membrane modified with Polypyrrole by chemical reduction of $H_2PtCI_6\;and\;RuCl_3$ solution ai precursor. From the electron dispersive microanalysis spectroscope(EDS), the Pt-Ru catalyst was located on the surface of Ppy/Nafion composite. The electrochemical oxidation of methanol on Pt-Ru catalyst deposited in Polypyrrole-impregnated Nafion was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry. The onset potential of methanol oxidation was shifted to negative potential as the $RuCI_3$ concentration in deposition solution. Also, it was known that the Pt-Ru binary catalyst on Nafion could be directly deposited by using Polypyrrole and resulting Pt-Ru/PPy/Nafion was available for methanol oxidation.
The adsorption properties of the activated carbon-based adsorbents were studied to remove COS emitted from $SO_2$ catalytic reduction process on the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system in this work. Transition metal supported catalysts and mixed metal oxide catalysts were used for the $SO_2$ catalytic reduction. The mechanism of COS produced from the $SO_2$ reduction and the COS concentration s according to the reaction temperature were investigated. In this study, an activated carbon and a modified activated carbon doped with KOH were used to remove the very low concentration of COS effectively. The adsorption rate and the breakthrough time of COS were measured by a thermo gravity analyzer (TGA, Cahn Balance) and a fixed bed flow reactor equipped with GC-pulsed flammable photometric detector (PFPD), respectively. It was confirmed that the COS breakthrough time of the activated carbon doped with KOH was longer than that of an activated carbon. In conclusion, the modified-activated carbon having a high surface area showed a high adsorption rate of COS produced from the $SO_2$ reduction.
