DC/DC switching power converters produce DC output voltages from different DC input sources. The converter is used in regenerative braking of DC motors to return energy back in the supply, resulting in energy savings for the systems containing frequent stops. The DC/DC converter is composed of a PWM-IC (pulse width modulation integrated circuit) controller, a MOSFET (metal-oxide semi-conductor field-effect transistor), an inductor, capacitors, and resistors, etc. PWM is applied to control and regulate the total output voltage. In this paper, radiation shows the main influence on the changes in the electrical characteristics of comparator, operational amplifier, etc. in PWM-IC. In the PWM-IC operation, the missing pulses, the changes in pulse width, and the changes of the output waveform are studied by the simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) and compared with experiments.
In the DC traction system, a large load current of electric railcar leads to a voltage drop when a vehicle starts, and the regenerative power generated by brake system increases the catenary voltage. To minimize the voltage fluctuation during the train operation and make use of the regenerative power, several types of energy storage systems are being studied. The energy storage system that is being recently introduced consists of the supercapacitors for energy storage and the bi-direction DC/DC converter for charge/discharge control. The efficiency of the energy storage system depends on the train operation pattern. In this paper, the operation efficiency of the energy storage system was quantitatively analyzed via simulation study taking consideration of the train operation patterns. The simulation was conducted changing the headway of trains with the energy storage system that uses the bi-direction DC/DC converter and supercapacitor. The simulation results showed that the operation efficiency of the energy storage system increases as the headway increase.
This paper proposes a reduction method for the mis-operation analysis of the DC High Speed Circuit Breaker(HSCB) in electric railway substation system. The analysis method is based on present condition of operation which is a method for accuracy level up. There is reason to operation of HSCB that it is mis-operation of fault detection relay(50F), operation of ground fault relay(64P), and trouble of electric car. A countermeasure is relay resetting through field test, induction of GTOCB(Gate Turn Off Thyristor Circuit Breaker), HSVCB(High Speed Vacuum Circuit Breaker), coordination with electric car. The results presented in the paper can be used as a reference for maintenance free in electric railway substation system.
The regenerative braked cars are being introduced in DC electric railway for energy saving. There has been a recent tendency for DC traction substation with regenerative inverter to increase in number. This is strongly related to the desire for effective utilization of electric power regenerated by DC electric cars and to the aim ensuring stable operation of regenerative braking system. The regenerative inverters DC power feed back from a generative car into AC power at a substation and supplies it to distribution lines. This paper suggest the result of characteristic analysis and capacity simulation. economical analysis in the regenerative inverter system.

In DC traction substation with 12-pulse diode rectifiers, the DC line voltage tends to rise above noload voltage because it can't absorb the regenerative power caused by electric brakes of train. To solve this problem, an IGBT regenerative inverter should be installed and recycles the surplus regenerative power by delivering it. to the supply grid. In this paper, the DC traction substation equipped with a IGBT regenerative inverter is studied using computer simulation. Matlab/simulink is used to simulate the operation of regenerative inverter which injects the regenerative power into the supply grid and stabilizes the DC line voltage. It is confirmed that the high quality regenerative power is delivered to the supply grid thorough computer simulation.

For the design of DC traction power supply system at new Light Rail Transit(LRT) construction, it is very important to determine system configuration, location and power capacity of substation. However, a LRT system consists of a number of subsystems such as train movement, power supply and traction drives, which inevitably contains many complexities and diversities. The objective of this paper is to clarify and systematize the design procedure and its assessment for the electrification system of a LRT line. This paper discusses in detail our approach to system design and its assessment. The whole DC-feeding network configuration, characteristics of a train, and design method of substation arrangements is thoroughly investigated for the design. As a result of the investigations, the design procedure is clarified and systematized and a computer program for the design and evaluation of the system is developed using the most suitable iterative method with nodal equation. To verify the proposed design and its assessment procedure, case studies for the DC traction power supply system of a planed Korean LRT line are performed.

DC traction power system is operated ungrounded so that minimize the stray current. Because the stray current is still present, a rail potential is increased. The ground faults in the DC railway systems are usually detected by a potential relay(64P). Moreover, if the rail potential goes high in the ordinary operating state because of the traction load, the potential relay would be maloperated. A presented protective relaying algorithm that can identify exactly the faulted region and can distinguish a ground fault from the potential rising of the rail is presented in this paper. This paper presents simulation technique that is very similar to the real operation situation using PSCAD/EMTDC.

Recently, the protection coordination method of DC systems has been presented because renewable energy and distributed resources are being installed and operated in distribution systems. On the other hand, it is difficult to detect ground faults because there is no significant difference compared to a steady-state current in ungrounded IT systems, such as DC load networks and urban railways. Therefore, this paper formulates the detection principle of IMD (Insulation Monitoring Device) to use it as a protection coordination device in a DC system. Based on the signal injection method of IMD, which is analyzed by a wavelet transform, this paper presents an algorithm of detecting ground faults in a DC system in a fast and accurate manner. In addition, this paper modeled an IMD and an ungrounded DC system using the PSCAD/EMTDC S/W and performed numerical analysis of a wavelet transform with the Matlab S/W. The simulation results of a ground fault case in an ungrounded DC system showed that the proposed algorithm and modeling are useful and practical tools for detecting a ground fault in a DC system.
