Oxidative-Coupling Reaction of Aromatic Compounds by Mn Oxide and Its Application for Contaminated Soil Remediation (망간산화물에 의한 방향족 유기화합물의 산화-공유결합반응 및 이를 이용한 오염토양 정화기법)

  • Immobilization of contaminants in subsurface environment is one of the major processes that determine their fate. Especially, immobilization by oxidative-coupling reactions, which is irreversible in the bio-chemical reactions and results in a significant reduction of toxicity, can be successfully applied for the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater more effectively than conventional degradation. As a catalyst of this oxidative-coupling reaction, manganese oxide has many advantages in practical aspects as compared to microorganisms or oxidoreductive enzymes extracted from microorganisms, fungi, or plants. This paper is to present recent research achievements on the treatment mechanisms of various organic contaminants by manganese oxide. Especially, treatment methods of non-reactive organic compounds to Mn oxide are the main focus; i.e., application of reaction mediator, PAHs treatment method, combination with an appropriate pretreatment such as reduction using $Fe^0$, which suggests the potential of a wide range of engineering application. Concerning the natural carbon cycle processes, immobilization and stabilization by oxidative coupling reaction can be effectively applied as a environmentally-friend remediation method especially for aromatic contaminants which possess a high resistance to degradation.

  • In this study, to increase removal efficiency of traditional electrokinetic treatment and to reduce contaminant load of wastewater that discharged through cathode compartment, enhanced electrode compartments were investigated. Hydroxide precipitation near the cathode electrode that encounter during traditional electrokinetic treatment were prevented by enhanced electrokinetic remediation test with newly invented electrode compartment. And heavy metal concentration in wastewater showed 0 ppm thus, additive post-treatment cost were not needed.

  • In this study, electrochemical characteristics variation and removal efficiency with initial pH and mineral compositions during electrokinetic remediation of lead contaminated soils were investigated. Test results showed that heavy metal transportation affected by soil characteristics and electrochemical characteristics varied during electrokinetic remediation. Therefore, in the application of enhanced electrokinetic remediation technique to increase removal efficiency, discrete selection of enhanced technique with characteristics of targeted soil were needed.

  • In this study, mine tailing buffer zone in cathode was used to overcome precipitation of heavy metals that reducing remediation efficiency during electrokinetic remediation. Test results showed that heavy metal transportation affected by initial soil pH which was verified through traditional test and enhanced test with two type of soils. With mine tailing enhanced method 39% of extraction rate was achieved in surface soil and significant transportation trend was observed in deep soil.

  • In general, municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash (MSWIF) has a potential hazardous leaching of heavy metal with subsurface environment variation. Therefore, to remove the heavy metal from MSWIF electrokinetic technology were used. With constant current density condition heavy metals in MSWIF removed by ion migration. During 7 days operation 40~80% of Cr, Cd and As were removed and longer operation, 14 days treatment, showed 35~100% removal efficiency.

계면활성제를 이용한 향상된 EK 정화 시 PAH의 제거

  • This paper presented to phenanthrene removal of electrokinetic(EK) remediation and enhanced EK remediation with bench scale test. The experiments were carried out on mixture soil with phenanthrene as the test compound. The EK remediation experiments were conducted under controlled voltage. Surfactant solution was constantly supplied at the anode reservoir with constant concentration. Results showed that phenanthrene was removed little in EK remediation. Surfactant helped phenanthrene moving and cumulated in cathode region. Moving effect was increased with surfactant concentration.

생물학적 복원기술에 의한 유류 오염토양의 정화

  • 현장에서 채취한 토양을 이용하여 Microcosm test를 실시한 결과 온도 및 수분함량이 높을수록 BTEX 분해율이 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며 산소 농도는 21~32% 정도가 적당하였다. 그러나 BTEX 초기농도가 높은 경우에는 생분해율이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. Bioventing 공법을 현장에 적용한 결과 OUR(Oxygen Utilization Rate)값은 6.3~16.3%O$_2$/day로 조사되었으며 Biodegradation rate 값은 3.4~8.8 mg hydrocarbon/kg soil/day로 조사되어 생물학적 처리 가능성이 있는 것으로 평가되었다.

  • 오염토양 복원의 신기술로서 미생물계면활성제를 이용한 생물학적 정화법(Bioremediation)의 표준화된 절차와 현장적용 결과를 제시하였다. 적절한 양분과 수분 그리고 산소를 공급하여 유류 오염물질의 생물학적 제거효율을 극대화시킬 수 있었으며 특히 유류오염물질을 효과적으로 분산시키기 위해 미생물계면활성제를 사용함으로써 오염된 토양을 단기간 내에 복원하는데 상당히 효과적인 기술임을 확인 할 수 있었으며 지속적인 현장적용 기술의 개발을 통하여 국내외적으로 당면하고 있는 토양오염문제를 해결하는데 크게 이바지 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

불포화 자연토의 포화도에 따른 동전기 정화특성에 관한 실험적 연구

  • The electrokinetic remediation tests for natural soil contaminated by lead are performed on unsaturated conditions, in which the degree of saturation is controlled through the changes in water content and the constant unit weight. At the degree of saturation of 70% the small acid range and electrical potential is developed. The changes in the water content are little above the saturation of 90%. But it is increased by 1.7 times at the degree of saturation of 70%. Finally, the efficiency of extraction is improved at 70% than 100%.

  • Soil washing was applied as a supplementary step of soil remediation at a petroleum oil contaminated site. A soil washing system was designed, assembled, and operated at the site. A field screening method with PetroFlagTM was adopted at the site to find the exact boundary of contaminated area as soil excavation progressed and to verify the concentration of treated soil. The system operation showed the cleanup efficiency of 90% at the compatible cost compared to other methods.
