  • Groundwater flow in fractured rocks generates many challenging problems to scientist and engineers in the projects related to oil and geothermal reservoirs, subsurface contaminations and underground openings. To circumvent these problems, the numerical simulation of groundwater system is used as an established tool in these days. Discrete modelling approach emphasizes geometric parameters, aperture and transport properties of fracture. On the other hand, continuum modelling approach uses the parameters formulated in a way of average hydraulic property. In recent years, the results of field observations from underground opening indicate that groundwater in rock mass flows in a channel form. The channel flow is postulated as the result of the combined effects of geometric pattern and aperture variation.

  • Understanding of the fracture processes in rock mass for hydrogeology necessitates such information as fracture mechanics including genesis, propagation, termination, and the relation of fracture distribution to geologic structures and fracture modelling, etc. A current status of information on fracture for groundwater flow in rock mass, however, is very paucity except on a few special fields throughout the world. The desired and reasonable approach method in the evaluation on the groundwater flow in fractured rock mass must be based on the thorough understanding of fracture processes and a simplified model representing fracture properties which would be met to natural conditions for the interpretation and prediction.

  • Groundwater inflow into the caverns constructed in fractured rock mass was simulated by numerical modeling, NAPSAC (DFN, discrete fracture network model) and NAMMU (CPM, continuous porous media model), a finite-element software package for groundwater flow in 3D fractured media developed by AEA Technology, UK. The input parameters for modeling were determined on surface fracture survey, core logging and single hole hydraulic test data. In order to predict the groundwater inflow more accurately, the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity was considered. The anisotropic hydraulic conductivities were calculated from the fracture network properties. With a minor adjustment during model calibration, the numerical modeling is able to reproduce reasonably groundwater inflows into cavern and the travel length and times to the ground surface along the flow paths in the normal, dry and rainy seasons.

  • Through the modeting study on the groundwater now system around the underground stockpile site of crude oil near Seoul, we carried out the research on the influence of the groundwater yield near the site, the effect of the water curtain construction in order to reduce the influence of water yield, and the realized case study by measuring the water level change after the construction of the water curtain. For the simu1ation of the water yield and the water curtain, the nwnerical analysis code, MODFLOW has been utilized. Groundwater levels of the observation wells which were established to observe the hydraulic head around underground oil storage cavern of the study area have been changed in the range of from EL.+30 to +60 meter, while the simulation study revealed that groundwater levels changed in the range of from EL.+20 to +5Om. The hydrogeological condition of the underground oil storage cavern becomes stable by injection water to maintain the groundwater level around the cavern. The result shows the proper input of the hydrogeological factors helps the management to be effective for the oil stockpile site.

  • On the basis of flow resistance theory the conceptual model and related mathematical descriptions is proposed for resistance modeling of groundwater flow in CPM(continuum Porous medium), DFN(discrete fracture network) and fractured-porous medium. The proposed model is developed on the basis of finite volume method assuming steady-state, constant density groundwater flow. The basic approach of the method is to evaluate inter-block flow resistance values for a staggered grid arrangement, i.e. fluxes are stored at cell walls and scalars at cell centers. The balance of forces, i.e. the Darcy law, is utilized for each control volume centered around the point where the velocity component is stored. The transmissivity (or permeability) at the interface is assumed to be the harmonic average of neighboring blocks. Flow resistance theory was utilized to relate the fluxes between the grid blocks with residual pressures. The flow within porous medium is described by three dimensional equations and that within an individual fracture is described by a two dimensional equivalent of the flow equations for a porous medium. Newly proposed models would contribute to develop flow simulation techniques with various matrix characteristics.

  • Based on the site characterization works in a low and intermediate level waste(LILW) repository site, the numerical simulations for groundwater flow were carried out in order to understand the groundwater flow system of repository site. To accomplish the groundwater flow modeling in the repository site, the discrete fracture network(DFN) model was constructed using the characteristics of fracture zones and background fractures. At result, the total 10 different hydraulic conductivity(K) fields were obtained from DFN model stochastically and K distributions of constructed mesh were inputted into the 10 cases of groundwater flow simulations in FEFLOW. From the total 10 numerical simulation results, the simulated groundwater levels were strongly governed by topography and the groundwater fluxes were governed by locally existed high permeable fracture zones in repository depth. Especially, the groundwater table was predicted to have several tens meters below the groundwater table compared with the undisturbed condition around disposal silo after construction of underground facilities. After closure of disposal facilities, the groundwater level would be almost recovered within 1 year and have a tendency to keep a steady state of groundwater level in 2 year.

  • Groundwater flow in rock mass is controlled by the fractures developed in the area. So, the conductive fractures are very important for groundwater flow in crystalline rock. This study aims to find out the characteristics of the fracture distributed in granitic rock in the northern part of the Yusong area (latitude $36^{\circ}24'18"~36^{\circ}25'08",{\;}longitude{\;}127^{\circ}21'00"~127^{\circ}23'23"$). The electric and EM surveys were carried out in the site to delineate the fracture the fracture zones. Since geophysical survey provides non-unique solution, hydraulic data and dilling log data including BHTV scanning were used as complementary data to achieve the objective of this study. Electric survey(DC) arrays used are schlumberger and dipole-dipole arrays. VLF is used for EM survey. The main charcteristics of the fracture developed in the study aera are that fractures associated with basic dyke cut corss the main fracture zone in NNW and play an important role as hydraulic barrier. In trun, groundwater table in the upstream area is lower than that downstream area.

  • In this study GIS based pre- and post-processing tool for the Visual MODFLOW that is specific software to model groundwater flow is developed. This tool not only makes input data scientifically but also manages input and output data in terms of the groundwater flow analysis. In addition it can storage project products systematically into Oracle database. The most characteristic figure of this processing tool is to provide the module, which automatically or semi automatically develops various grid cell sizes using GIS ArcView and also produces DXF files reflecting various boundary conditions in the modeling zone. In particular, eminences of this research are to create 3 dimensional hydrogeological structures with 2 dimensional GIS ArcView and to conduct pre- and post- processing along with same topology and data format of the MODFLOW.

  • The groundwater flow and contaminant transport numerical models have been established for analyzing the movements of pollutants in subsurface soil at Daeduk site. The groundwater flow and concentration of U-234 using the numerical models were simulated around Daeduk nuclear facilities. The computed groundwater flow was mainly advected toward the direction of east and southeast around HANARO in the site. The radioactive material entered into the subsurface soil was transported along the same direction with groundwater flow. The radioactive material deposited on the surface from the calculated concentration distributions was not affected by surrounding environment of the site.
