  • With the advent of super-conducting magnet, NMR spectroscopy becomes a very important tool in geology as well as in chemistry. $^{29}Si$ and $^{27}Al$ which are the main components of minerals and contain structural informations, are useful major targets for the NMR study in geology, but some other elements including alkali cations such as $^{23}Na$ are also one of them. NMR can be applied to many different fields. For example, it can be applied to study smaller range of structure (in molecular level) than XRD and TEM. NMR provides us with structural informations such as order-disorder in Al and Si distribution, oxygen coordination number, and distribution of other cations. Another important information that we can obtain from NMR is not only the static structural informations, but also the molecular dynamics. This dynamic informations of molecules also enable us to figure out the frequency of molecular motion and activation energy. Structure of amorphous minerals and chemistry and structure of natural organic materials are also studied by NMR.

  • Speleology has been recognized as a comprehensive science. The purpose of this study examine the research trends of the cave in korea. Journal of the Speleological Society was used for analysis. In the 1970s, research was focused primarily in the field of geomorphology(geology). But, since the 2000s, a variety of disciplines in the cave study is in progress.

  • Hydrothermal gold deposits are evidence of intensive fluid flow through fault zones, and the resultant vein structures and textures reflect the fluid redistribution mechanism. This review introduces the suction pump and fault valve models as fluid circulation mechanisms causing hydrothermal gold deposits in the frameworks of the concepts of fault mechanics. The suction pump and fault valve models describe faulting-driven heterogeneous fluid flow and related vein formation mechanisms, accompanied by the cycles of (1) stress accumulation and fluid pressure build-up and (2) seismic rupture and stress/fluid pressure release. The models are available under different geological environments (stress conditions), and the vein structures and textures representing the mechanisms have similarities and differences. The suction pump and fault valve models must help better to interpret the origins of hydrothermal gold deposits in Korea and improve the efficiency of further exploration.

  • Soil moisture is defined as water in the pores of the soil's unsaturated zone, and it is closely related to various hydrological processes. This study aims to provide meaningful data by identifying factors affecting soil moisture through comparing soil moisture content and soil permeability in a study area covering six different land use types in an agricultural region that is highly dependent on groundwater. We conduct auto-correlation analysis, spectral density analysis, and cross-correlation analysis using time-series data. Soil moisture content shows to have weak auto-correlation and memory effects, and precipitation appears to have a substantial influence on soil moisture content. Saturation hydraulic conductivity does not vary markedly with changing land use, and instead appears to be affected by the inhomogenous soil structure.

  • We report field relationship, petrography and major and trace element chemistry for the central part of the Seoul granitic bathlith of Jurassic age occurring in the Kyonggi massif. The batholith consists mainly of biotite granite (BG) and garnet biotite granite (GBG) with minor tonalite-quartz diorite and biotite granodiorite with or without hornblende. The mode data, along with the those reported by Hong (1984) for the biotite granite (south-BG) in the southern part of the batholith, indicate that the many of BGs and majority of GBG and south-BG are leucocratic. Major element data indicate that these predominant rocks of the batholith are peraluminous. Variation trends in Harker diagrams for the major and trace elements suggest that the BG and GBG are not related by a simple crystal fractionation process. The same is true between the central (BG and GBG) and the southern (south-BG) parts of the batholith, suggesting that the central and southern parts of the Seoul batholith may consist of three separate intrusions. Tectonic discriminations using major and trace element data and the age of emplacement suggest that the batholith represents Jurassic plutonism related to an orogeny, perhaps to a subduction-related continental magmatic arc.
