  • The building process of any geological map involves linking sparse lithological outcrop information with equally sparse geometrical measurements, all in a single entity which is the preferred interpretation of the field geologist. The actual veracity of this interpretative map is partially dependent upon the frequency and distribution of geological outcrops compounded by the complexity of the local geology. Geophysics is commonly used as a tool to augment the distribution of data points, however it normally does not have sufficient geometrical constraints due to: a) all geophysical inversion models being inherently non-unique; and b) the lack of knowledge of the physical property contrasts associated with specific lithologies. This contribution proposes the combined use of geophysical edge detection routines and 'three point' solutions from topographic data as a possible approach to obtaining geological contact geometry information (strike and dip), which can be used in the construction of a preliminary geological model. This derived geological information should first be assessed for its compatibility with the scale of the problem, and any directly observed geological data. Once verified it can be used to help constrain the preferred geological map interpretation being developed by the field geologist. The method models the contacts as planar surfaces. Therefore, it must be ensured that this assumption fits the scale and geometry of the problem. Two examples are shown from folded sequences at the Bathurst Mining Camp, New Brunswick, Canada.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of Meles meles oil as an functional resource. To assess the effects of Meles meles oil in 25 non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) persons, we examined changes of fat intake level, hematological and chemical variables, serum DM indices and lipid contents during the Meles meles oil supplementation. Polyunsaturated fatty acid and $\omega$3 fatty acid intake were significantly increased by Meles meles oil intakes. The levels of LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly decreased while HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased. Iron status improved during Meles meles oil intakes. These results show that modest dose of Meles meles oil supplementation can decrease serum triglyceride, cholesterol level without any changes in blood glucose level in NIDDM patients. These results indicated that Meles meles oil diet is effective therapeutic regimen for the control of metabolic derangements in diabetes mellitus. Also, these results imply that Meles meles oil can be used as possible food resources and functional food materials. However, large amounts of Meles meles oil should be used cautiously in NIDDM patients.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes in bound, free, and neutral lipid components of malt during malting, two-rowed barley. During malting, the temperature and relative humidity were $17^{\circ}C$ and 80%, respectively. The content of free lipids in both two-rowed barley and their malt was much higher than that of bound lipids. Decrease in the content of free lipids during malting was more prominent than that of bound lipids. The content of neutral lipids was 21.0mg/g-d. w. out of 27.9mg/g-d. w. of total lipids extracted from two-rowed barley. The content of neutral lipids decreased during malting. Triglyceride, free fatty acid and sterol ester were the principal components of neutral lipids. The content of triglyceride decreased during malting, but the content of free fatty acid and sterol ester increased. Linoleic, palmitic, oleic and linolenic acid were the principal fatty acid of free and bound lipids. The content of palmitic acid in free lipids increased during malting, but that of bound lipids decreased. The content of oleic acid in free lipids decreased. The principal fatty acids of neutral lipids were similar to those of free lipids. The content of palmitic acid increased during malting, but that of linoleic and stearic acid decreased.

  • The social demands to conserve the geological outcrops with important scientific values are increasing. Accordingly public programs such as national geopark are recently established. In this study, outcrops with geological values in the Dusong Peninsula geosite of the Busan National Geopark are investigated in details with a discussion in the aspects of geoheritage values. The Dusong Peninsula is located in the late Cretaceous Dadaepo Basin interpreted as an intra-arc pull-apart basin extended in the Cretaceous Yucheon Subbasin. In this area, a number of noticeable geological records, such as andesitic sills, lower Dadaepo Formation, paleo-seismites, clastic dikes, compound calcrete deposits, syn-depositional normal faults, and unconformity between basin-fill and basements, are observed. Considering their unique geological significance, the strategic plans for their conservation and management should be urgently provided.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate pre-service middle school earth science teachers' perceptions about the learning of geological field trip. The study sample consists of 39 undergraduate students at the university located in a metropolitan city. Additionally, 4 pre-service earth science teachers are semi-structure interviewed. The instrument of the study includes a 5-category perception about the learning of geological field trip, which consists of needs, educational values, educational experience, teaching methods, and training for learning. The results are as follows. First, participants are important to the need and educational values of learning about the geological field trip regardless of gender and grade level. Second, all participants have experienced geological field trip in college. They have more opportunities to experiment for field trip as they advance to higher grade. There is significant difference between lower and higher graders in terms of the goal of learning about geological field trip. It needs a new lesson model to teach geology between men and women regarding teaching methods category. In order to practice geological field trip in school, participants perceive that they need the knowledge of geological context, experiment of field trips, and how to teach geological field trip to students. This study suggests that pre-service earth science teachers' perceptions include how to teach and learn geological field trip during their college year.

  • The experimentally cultivated potatoes of 4 varieties, Irish Cobbler, Warba, Shimabara, and Saco were dried in a frozen state, powdered subsequently and subjected to the extraction of free and bound lipids. Constituents of the prepared lipids were fractionated, quantified, and compared by the methods of column and gas-liquid chromatographies. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The total crude lipid content in potato on a dry weight basis was 0.57 % of which 0.2 % was free lipid and 0.37 % was bound lipid. 2. The neutral lipid content in the free lipid was 14.9 %, approximately 3 times as much as the 4.5 % contained in the bound lipid, whereas the glycolipid content in the free lipid was 15.1 %, slightly less than 22.2 % contained in the bound lipid. However, the phospholipid content was 33.9 % in the bound lipid, approximately 4.5 times as much as the 7.2 % contained in the free lipid. This fact revealed that the bound lipid consisted mainly of polar lipid, while the free lipid consisted of neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids in about the same proportion. 3. The main fatty acids constituting more than 90 % in the free and bound lipids were linoleic, palmitic and linolenic acids. The content of the saturated fatty acid was slightly less in the free lipid than in the bound lipid, whereas the unsaturated fatty acids were more abundant in the free lipid.

  • As environmental criteria items are increased or strengthened, cases of heavy metal contamination by geogenic origin are increasing, and the need to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic origins in soil or groundwater exceeding the standard is increasing. In this study, geochemical occurrences of geogenic heavy metals were identified through statistical processing of the national geochemical map data and evaluation of geochemical characteristics of regions with high geoaccumulation indices. Cobalt, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn were targeted for which the national geochemical maps were prepared, and Co, Cr, Ni, and V derived from ultrabasic or ultramafic rocks were classified as factor 1. Copper, Pb and Zn of non-ferrous sulfide origin were classified as factor 2. In particular, enrichment of heavy metals by factor 1 occurs mainly in the serpentine distribution areas of the Chungcheong region, and there is a risk of contamination in neighboring areas. In the case of factor 2, geogenic occurrence is concerned not only in non-ferrous metal mineralization areas such as Taebacksan and Gyeongnam mineralization zones, but also in Au-Ag mineralization areas distributed nationwide.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the trust and distrust perception of our society about science and technology. In addition to examining trust and distrust in science and technology, we also looked at trust and distrust in geoscience technology. In addition, by comparing the levels of trust and distrust in science and technology and geological resource technology, the implications for improving the reliability of geological resource technology are drawn. This study surveyed male and female office workers over 20 years of age working in the Seoul metropolitan area on the trust and distrust of science and technology. The results of this study show that respondents showed above-average trust in science and technology and geological resource technology. According to the gender or age of respondents, there was no difference in trust and distrust of science and technology and geological resource technology. As a result of examining the difference between trust and distrust in science and technology and geological resource technology, respondents showed higher trust scores in science and technology than geological resource technology. These results suggest that current communications activities on geological resources should be more active and diversified.
