Analysis of Failure Behavior of Piles Embedded in Liquefied Soil Deposits (액상화 지반에 근입된 말뚝의 파괴거동 분석)

  • Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading has been the most extensive damage to pile foundations during earthquakes. Several cases of pile failures were reported despite the fact that a large margin of safety factor was employed in their design. In this study, 1-g shaking table tests were performed in order to analyze the failure behavior of piles embedded in liquefied soil deposits by buckling instability. As a result, it can be concluded that the pile subjected to excessive axial loads $(near\;P_{cr})$ can fail easily by buckling instability during liquefaction. When lateral spreading took place in sloping grounds, it was found that lateral loading due to lateral spreading increased lateral deflection of pile and reduced the buckling load. In addition, from the buckling shape of pile, difference between Euler's buckling and pile buckling vat observed. In the case of pile buckling, hinge formed at the middle point of the pile, not at the bottom. And in sloping grounds, location of hinge formation got lower compared with level ground because of the soil movements.

Development of Earthquake Resistant Analysis Models for Typical Roadway Bridges (일반도로교의 내진해석모델 개발)

  • The structural safety required in general design is to be proved with safety factors provided for structural members in elastic range. But, for the safety requirement in the earthquake resistant design, a specific ductile failure mechanism in plastic range should be verified according to the structural configuration. Therefore such verifications should be done in the preliminary design stage by comparing various design alternatives. In the main design stage only a confirmation of the ductile failure mechanism is required. In this study typical roadway bridges are selected and analysis models are presented for the preliminary and main design. For the two models, vibration periods and mode shapes are compared and the multi-mode spectrum method is applied to determine failure mechanisms. The failure mechanisms obtained with the two models are compared to check the properness of the model used for the preliminary design, which may well be used as an earthquake resistant analysis model in practice.

Seismic Fragility of Sewage Pipes Considering Site Response in Korean, Seoul Site (국내 서울지역의 부지응답해석을 고려한 하수도관의 지진취약도)

  • The number of damaged lifeline structures have been increasing with urban acceleration under earthquakes. To predict the damage, damage mitigation technology of lifeline structures should be analyzed using damage prediction technology. Therefore, in this paper, the degree of the fragility of structures under an earthquake was evaluated stochastically through an evaluation of the seismic fragility. The aim was to develop damage prediction technology of sewage pipes among the lifeline facilities. The site response was performed using the data from 158 boreholes in Seoul and 7 real earthquake waves to determine the responses in real urban areas. The seismic fragility was deduced through a total of 29822 time history analysis. In addition, sewer pipes were evaluated and the persisting period was passed by applying the research results of strength reduction which is due to sulphate erosion. As a result, the difference in failure probability between 300 and 800 with the smaller diameter of the representative pipes was approximately double and the size of the pipes has a significant effect on the seismic fragility function. Moreover, the failure probability of a seismic load increases by up to 10 fold as the strength reduction rate increases. The results of this study can be used as a means of predicting the damage and countermeasures of sewer pipes and might be reflected in the seismic design of underground facilities.

Seismic Responses Control of Coupled Shear Wall Structures Using LRBs (LRB를 이용한 병렬전단벽 구조물의 지진응답제어)

  • Most of shear wall structures require openings in shear walls and thus shear walls are linked by floor slabs or coupling beams resulting in the coupled shear wall structures. When these structures are subjected to seismic excitations, excessive shear forces are induced in coupling beams. Accordingly, brittle failure of coupling beams may occur or shear walls may yield first. To avoid this problem, damping devices can be installed in coupling beams. It can increase the vibration control effect and improve the seismic resistance performance of the coupled shear wall structure by avoiding stress concentration and the brittle failure of coupling beams. Based on this background research, an LRB (lead rubber bearing) was introduced in the middle of the coupling beam in this study and the authors investigated the seismic response control effect and stress distribution of the proposed system. To this end, a modeling technique that can effectively predict the structural behavior of coupled shear wall structures has been proposed. With this proposed technique, time history analyses of the example coupled shear wall structure subjected to seismic excitation were performed and the vibration control effects of the seismic responses were investigated.

A Seismic Capacity of R/C Building Damaged by the 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake Based on the Non-linear Dynamic Analysis (비선형동적해석에 의한 2016년 경주지진에서 지진피해를 받은 R/C 건물의 내진성능에 관한 연구)

  • On September 12, 2016, the Gyeongju District was strongly shaken with M=5.8, which was the largest one since measured by the actual seismometer in Korea, and some buildings were damaged. The field survey of reinforced concrete school buildings in the affected area was carried out, and their residual seismic capacities(R) were estimated based on the Japanese Standard for post-earthquake damage evaluation. In this study, the M school, which was greatly damaged by the 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake, was selected, and its damage level was evaluated on the basis of the Japanese Standard. The seismic capacity of the M school was also evaluated using the nonlinear dynamic analysis, and relationships between its damage level and seismic capacity was also conducted to investigate causes of earthquake damage. The damage level of M school was classified into light with R=88.2%. The result of the dynamic analysis agreed reasonably well with the damage of M school sustained by the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake. This will provide fundamental data for earthquake preparedness measures, such as the seismic rehabilitation of low-rise reinforced concrete buildings in Korea.

  • 본 기사는 교량의 이음부(joint) 설계를 위한 새로운 구조적 퓨즈 개념을 다루고 있다. 제안하는 개념은 경제성, 명확한 하중경로, 그리고 지진 후 보수의 용이성 등을 포함한 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있다. 기본적인 아이디어는 평상시의 사용 상태에서는 탄성거동을 할 수 있을 정도로 강하지만 동시에 주요 지진이 발생하였을 때는 파괴될 수 있을 정도로 약한 구조적 퓨즈를 설계하여 지진에너지가 퓨즈를 통과하지 못하도록 하겠다는 것이다. 두 가지의 대표적인 프로젝트를 소개하여 구조적 퓨즈의 개념이 실무에 어떻게 성공적으로 적용될 수 있었는지 보이고자 한다.

Seismic Analysis Models for Typical Roadway Bridges considering failure Mechanisms (파괴메카니즘을 고려한 일반도로교의 지진해석모델)

  • For the seismic analysis of typical roadway bridges provisions are given in most codes for analysis models, which describes however only fundamental modelling methods according to the basic theories of structural dynamics. In practice even conventional non-seismic analysis models, separate super- and substructure models, are applied, which are not adequate because of neglecting connection elements. In this study three typical roadway bridges, a Steel box bridge, a PC beam bridge and a PC box bridge are selected and simple models integrating super- and substructure as well as connection elements are given. The simple models are composed with frame elements with lumped masses representing stiffness and mass characteristics of the selected bridges. To check the properness of the simple models, analysis results with the simple models are compared with those obtained with detailed models in view of bridge failure mechanisms. It is proved that the simple models can be used in the preliminary design phase fur the determination of failure mechanisms of typical roadway bridges.

  • 본 논문은 국내의 비보강 조적조에 대해 내진성능을 조사하기 위하여 재료측성 평가를 위한 실험연구를 수행하였다. 실험결과를 바탕으로 조적용 모르터의 압축강도식을 제안하였다. 또한 조적용 모르터의 배합비에 따른 조적조 프리즘의 압축강도 특성을 비교하였다. 조적조 프리즘의 압축강도로써 조적조의 탄성계수를 구할 수 있는 약산식을 제시하였으며, 약산식을 사인장 조적조 실험을 통하여 구한 전단탄성계수값과 비교하여 볼 때 타당성을 가지고 있다고 판단된다. 실험결과로써 나온 재료특성 값을 바탕으로 2층 조적조 다세대 주택에 대한 유사동적해석을 수행하였다. 해석결과로 얻은 전단응력과 전단파괴가 나타난 사인장 조적조의 허용전단응력은 유사한 것으로 확인되었다.

Seismic performance of Piers in Seohae Grand Bridge (서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능)

  • 서해대교는 국내에 교량구조물에 관한 내진설계가 도입되기 전 설계된 교량으로서 현재 내진설계 규준에 적합하지 않은 종방향철근 및 횡방향 철근이 겹침이음된 중공육각형 단면의 철근콘크리트 기둥으로 이미 시공이 완료된 상태이다. 최근, 지진에 대한 사회적 관심이 대두됨으로서 내진 설계 규준에 적합하지 않은 철근상세를 가지 서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능이 의문시되었다. 따라서, 비내진 철근상세를 가진 서해대교 PSM교 교각의내진성능 평가를 위하여 교각의 축소모형 실험을 수행하였으며, 실험결과 종방향철근 겹침이음이 교각의 전체적인 내진거동에는 큰 영향을 미치지 않으며 기대 이상의 연성을 발휘할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 논문에서는 축소모형 실험결과에 의한 시험체의 파괴양상, 유효강성, 연성, 응답수 정계수 및 등가점성감쇠비를 분석하였으며, 아울러 가속도변위 응답스펙트럼을 이용하여 서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능을 평가하였다.

지진하중에 의한 구조물 파괴형상 변화에 대한 메조스케일 해석

  • A lattice model of a typical bridge column section is analyzed, and results are presented. The lattice is built as an ensemble of line elements and masses, that can capture strain rate dependency of concrete material. The research mainly breaks up into two parts: First, a micro level analysis of the material is executed, and control parameters of the governing equations are derived by matching the results with the common macroscopic properties of concrete material. Then, the properties exhibited by the micro model, which extends the classical material properties are applied to the mesoscale model. Hence, the analysis of the target structure can be performed. In the mesoscale analysis, ramp-like impulse loads are applied at different velocity, so that the contribution of the material level rate dependency to the global behavior of the structure can be tracked.
