  • To reduce the amount of seismic damage, several design codes are being improved considering the earthquake resistant systems, and many researches are being conducted to develop the earthquake damage evaluation techniques. This study develops the Korean seismic fragility function using the modified HAZUS method applicable to PSC-I girder bridges in Korea. The major coefficients are modified considering the difference between the seismic design levels of America and Korea. Seismic fragility function of the PSC-I girder bridge (one of the standard bridge types in Korea) is evaluated using two methods: numerical analysis and modified HAZUS method. The main coefficients are obtained about 70% of the proposed values in HAZUS. It is found that the seismic fragility function obtained using the modified HAZUS method closes to the fragility function obtained by conventional numerical analysis method.

  • Seismic performances of existing structures should be assessed with more accuracy for cost-effective retrofits. Existing bridges are assessed by the current guidelines in which a simple method has been adapted considering the technical level of engineers of the historical time of construction. Recently many probabilistic approaches have been performed to reflect the uncertainties of seismic input motions. Structures are modeled frequently with the neglection of soil foundations or modeled occasionally with elastic soil spring elements to consider the effect of the soil on the structural response. However, soil also shows nonlinearity under seismic events, so this characteristic should be reflected in order to obtain a more accurate assessment. In this study, a 6-span continuous bridge has been analyzed under various seismic events, in which the soil was represented by equivalent linear spring elements having different properties according to the intensities of the input motions experienced. The seismic vulnerabilities with respect to the failure of piers and the dropping of the super-structure were evaluated on the basis of the analysis results.

  • As the structural damage caused by earthquakes has been gradually increasing, estimating the seismic fragility of structures has become essential for earthquake preparation. Seismic fragility curves are widely used as a probabilistic indicator of structural safety against earthquakes, and many researchers have made efforts to develop them in a more accurate and effective manner. However, most of the previous research studies used simplified 2D analytical models when deriving fragility curves, mainly to reduce the numerical simulation time; however, in many cases 2D models are inadequate to accurately evaluate the seismic behavior of a structure and its seismic vulnerability. Thus, this study provides a way to derive more accurate, but still effective, seismic fragility curves by using 3D analytical models. In this method, the reliability analysis software, FERUM, is integrated with the structural analysis software, ZEUS-NL, enabling the automatic exchange of data between these two software packages, and the first order reliability method (FORM), which is not a sampling-based method, is utilized to calculate the structural failure probabilities. These tools make it possible to conduct structural reliability analyses effectively even with 3D models. By using the proposed method, this study conducted a seismic vulnerability assessment of RC frame structures with their 3D analytical models.

  • In this study, a tsunami fragility methodology was determined for a probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) induced tsunami event in Nuclear Power Plant(NPP) site. For this purpose, a fragility evaluation method was presented using previous external PSA method. Failure mode and failure criteria about major safety related equipments and structures were determined. Finally, a tsunami fragility assessment was performed for offsite transformer in NPP site. For the fragility evaluation, structural failure like overturning and sliding and functional failure induced by inundation. Through this study, it can be concluded that a functional failure according to inundation height was governed total probability of failure of offsite transformer in NPP.

  • Analytical probabilistic vulnerability analysis requires extensive computing effort as a result of the randomness in both input motion and response characteristics. In this study, a new methodology whereby a set of vulnerability curves are derived based on the fundamental response quantities of stiffness, strength and ductility is presented. A response database of coefficients describing lognormal vulnerability relationships is constructed by employing aclosed-form solution for a generalized single-degree-of-freedom system. Once the three fundamental quantities of a wide range of structural systems are defined, the vulnerability curves for various limit states can be derived without recourse to further simulation. Examples of application are given and demonstrate the extreme efficiency of the proposed approach in deriving vulnerability relationships.

  • In this study, a seismic risk analysis performed for an applicability assessment of steel fiber in containment structures. Steel fiber can increase tensile properties of concrete structures moreover compressive and shear capacity. But many of researches about steel fiber reinforced concrete structures are now only focused in axial load condition. Also it is very difficult to find an effort for application to containment structures in NPP. Therefore, in this study, seismic fragility assessment for a steel fiber reinforced concrete containment structure. As a result, a seismic fragility capacity improved according to increase of shear and ductile capacity of concrete. In the case of 1.0% of steel fiber volume fraction, seismic capacity increases as 10%. But very limited previous experimental results were used in this study, so various element tests were needed for more accurate investigation.

  • In this paper, earthquake fragility analysis has been comparatively performed with regard to a buried gas pipeline of API X65 which has been widely used in Korea. For this purpose, a nonlinear time-history analyses has been carried out for 15 different analytical models of a buried gas pipeline in terms of the selected 12 sets of earthquake ground motions with 0.1g of scaling interval. Following that, earthquake fragility analyses have been conducted using the maximum axial strain of the pipeline obtained from the nonlinear time-history analyses. Parameters under consideration for subsequent earthquake fragility analyses are soil conditions, end-restraint conditions, burial depth and the type of pipeline. Comparative analyses reveal that whereas the first three parameters influence the fragility curves, particularly soil conditions amongst the three parameters, the last parameter has a little effect on the curves. In all, the present study can be considered as a benchmark fragility analysis of a buried gas pipeline in the absence of an earthquake fragility analysis of the pipeline and thus is expected to be a useful source regarding earthquake fragility analyses of a buried gas pipelines.

  • A technique for the seismic reliability evaluation of electric power transmission network system(EPTS) was developed to evaluate reliability indices corresponding to the whole network system and to each node within. A network model with nodes and links for EPTS was established, and a seismic substation fragility curve obtained from seismic fragilities of power system facilities was derived. A point source model, the doubly truncated Gutenberg-Richter relationship, and earthquake intensity attenuation formula was applied to simulate seismic events. Using Monte-Carlo simulation method, the seismic reliability of EPTS was evaluated and, it appeared that seismic effect on EPTS of korea has to be considered.

  • In the course of seismic probabilistic risk assessment(SPRA), seismic fragility analysis(SFA) is utilized as a tool to evaluate the actual seismic capacity of structures. This paper introduces a methodology of SFA and its evaluation procedures, especially focusing on the basic fragility variables. A new definition of the response spectrum shape factor as one of the most critical basic variables is suggested. The new factor is expressed as a term of linear algebraic sum using the modal contribution factor. The efficiency of new response spectrum shape factor is evaluated and validated to use in practice through the case study of the nuclear power plant structures. The case study results show that the proposed method can be effectively applicable to multi-mode structures with composite modal damping.

  • Recently seismic fragility analysis method has been widely used for the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of infrastructures such as nuclear power plants, buildings and bridges because of its probabilistic characteristics. Furthermore, this technique has been applied to large-scale social systems consisted of each infrastructures by combing GIS. In this paper, the applicability of this technique to domestic infrastructural systems was studied. The transportation network was selected as one of these domestic infrastructural systems. Example studies were peformed about Changwon city. Nonlinear time history analysis, with a maximal likelihood approach were conducted to establish the fragility curves of each infrastrucures (bridges). GIS analysis was also applied to the analysis of whole infrastructural systems. The results show that it is very useful to predict seismic probabilistic risk assessment of this domestic transportation network. However, it also shows that further studies such as more suitable damage criterion to domestic structure and precise nonlinear analysis techniques should be developed to predict more precise results.
