  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural behavior of circular concrete filled carbon tube(CFCT) columns subjected to constant axial load with the cyclic lateral load. Six numbers of composite columns were tested. Two parameters, winding angle and thickness of tube, were chosen to evaluate the flexural capacity and behavior of CFCT columns. Selected two parameters were considered simultaneously in order to evaluate the flexural behavior of CFCT columns more precisely. Flexural strength, deformation capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of CFCT columns were evaluated by calculating the area of load-displacement envelop curves and load-displacement hysteresis curves obtained from experiment. Also, the ductile capacity obtained from experiment were compared to that of reinforced masonry wall for the comparison of existing structural element.

  • This study investigates the effect of site class, post-yield stiffness ratio, damping ratio, yield-strength reduction factor, and natural period on inelastic displacement ratio of bilinear SDF systems located at the sites classified as NEHRP site class B,C,D. The previous studies developed inelastic displacement ratio using equal displacement rule in the intermediate and long period range. But, this approximation overestimates the inelastic displacement ratio. Furthermore, inelastic displacement ratio has not been developed for the systems having a damping ratio less than 5%. This study conducts nonlinear regression analysis for proposing equations for calculating median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio of the bilinear SDOF system having damping ratios ranging from 0 to 20%. Using median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio, probabilistic inelastic displacement ratio is estimated, which can be used for performance-based seismic evaluation.

  • The connection type of steel moment frames in the country is mostly fabricated in factories so that it is fairly ductile due to good quality control. Based on references, the domestic connection satisfies the performance limit for steel intermediate moment frames specified by the AISC. However, the current KBC2009 building code specifies various systems for steel moment frames such as ordinary, intermediate, and special moment frames while the former KBC2005 only did so for a ductile moment frame. This induces the necessity of investigating which system is appropriate in the country when the domestic connection is applied. Therefore, this study was aimed at finding a proper design method by comparing the ductile moment frame in KBC2005 and the intermediate moment frames in KBC2009. The results showed that seismic design parameters for the ductile moment frames can be reasonable for satisfying the performance objective.

  • Recently, the frequency and scale of natural disasters such as typhoons, flood, earthquakes, and tidal waves from earthquakes has been increasing. Several nations have recognized that earth observation is essential for protecting the Earth's environment. However, as the data format from earth observation varies depending on areas, institutes, and countries, sharing and exchange between data is difficult. Thus, we have a metadata standardization scheme suitable for the domestic situation to allow exchange of data between societal benefit areas with reference to principles of data sharing and exchange that are discussed on GEO (Group on Earth Observation). We have also designed metadata schemes required to identify the metadata situation of earth observation data being used for 9 societal benefit areas of GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems).

  • For spatial free vibration of non-symmetric thin-walled curved beams with shear deformation, an improved formulation is proposed in the present study. The elastic strain and the kinetic energies are first derived by considering constant curvature and shear deformation effects due to shear forces and restrained warping torsion. Next equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations are obtained using a stationary condition of total potential energy. And the finite element procedures are developed by using isoparametric curved beam element with arbitray thin-walled sections. Particularly not only shear deformation and thickness-curvature effects on vibration behaviors of curved beams but also mode transition and crossover phenomena with change in curvatures of beams are parametrically investigated. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the reliability of this study, various numerical solutions for spatial free vibration are compared with results by available references and ABAQUS's shell element.

  • In this paper, the feasibility of using Shannon's sampling theorem to reconstruct exact mode shapes of a structural system from a limited number of sensor points and localizing damage in that structure with reconstructed mode shapes is investigated. Shannon's sampling theorem for the time domain is reviewed. The theorem is then extended to the spatial domain. To verify the usefulness of extended theorem, mode shapes of a simple beam are reconstructed from a limited amount of data and the reconstructed mode shapes are compared to the exact mode shapes. On the basis of the results, a simple rule is proposed for the optimal placement of accelerometers in modal parameter extraction experiments. Practicality of the proposed rule and the extended Shannon's theorem is demonstrated by detecting damage in laboratory beam structure with two-span via applying to mode shapes of pre and post damage states.

  • The magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in 2017 near 7.5 km north of Buk-gu, Pohang. In order to find out the characteristics of microtremor in Buk-gu, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, where earthquake damage occurred significantly, a total of 39 points were acquired to analyze the horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR). Microtremor vary from region to region, so the resonant frequency of the region is obtained by examining the microtremor. For Thickness analysis, we analyze the structure and properties of shear wave velocity (Vs) up to the underlying rock to compare resonance frequencies to match the horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) analysis technique against nearby boring data. Using F0 = Vs/4H with a resonance frequency of alluvium is 1.3 ± 0.07 Hz and a resonance frequency of Yeonil group is 0.69 ± 0.22 Hz, the alluvium thickness was found to be 26~30 m and the Yeonil group thickness was 170~250 m.

  • A literature survey on traditional Korean rice-cakes was made in order to identify the historical background and the state of scientific understanding on these products. Korean rice cakes can be classified into 5 groups depending on the processing methods; steamed (Jeung-byung), pounded (Do-byung), shaped and steamed or boiled (Dan-ja), fried (Yu-Jeon-byung) and fermented and steamed (Yi-byung). They are further divided into varieties by the raw materials used, coating materials and shape. The recipe and processing characteristics of 5 groups of Korean rice-cake were discussed and the scientific findings on these products were reviewed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of both exterior precast concrete cladding panels and their connections on steel frame, when these cladding systems are considered as the structural components. The degrees of their participation of lateral stiffness to the main building are evaluated in terms of different heights of the cladding panels. Considering the cladding system as an integrated building provides additional lateral stiffness, as well as a mechanism for energy dissipation and this system can be used as one of an advanced passive seismic control system. Hysteresis behaviors of connectors are modeled and integrated into a nonlinear finite element analysis program, ABAQUS. The results show that connections play the most important role in structural cladding system and they improve seismic performance of overall building response.

  • The most common housing type in Korea is low-rise buildings with unreinforced masonry walls (UMWs) that have been known as a vulnerable seismic-force-resisting system (SFRS) due to the lack of ductility capacities compared to high lateral stiffness of an UMW. However, there are still a little experimental investigation on the shear strength and stiffness of UMWs and on the seismic performance of buildings using UMWs as a SFRS. In Korea, the shear strength and stiffness of UMWs have been evaluated with the equations suggested in FEMA 356 which can not reflect the structural and material characteristics, and workmanship of domestic UMW construction. First of all, this study demonstrates the differences in shear strength and stiffness of UMWs obtained from between FEMA 356 and test results. The influence of these differences on the seismic performance of UMW buildings is then discussed with incremental dynamic analyses results of a prototype UMW building that were selected by the site survey of more than 200 UMW buildings and existing test results of UMWs. The seismic performance assessment of the prototype UMW building are analyzed based on collapse margin ratios and beta values repesenting uncertainty of seismic capacity. Analysis results show that the seismic performance of the UMW building estimated using the equations in FEMA 356 underestimates both a collapse margin ratio and a beta value compared to that estimated by test results. Whatever the estimation is carried out two cases, the seismic performance of the prototype building does not meet the criteria prescribed in a current Korean seismic code and about 90% collapse probability presents for more than 30-year-old UMW buildings under earthquakes with 2400 return years.
