The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the application of cool dialysis on dialytic stability, feeling of fatigue, pruritus and dialysis adequacy in hemodialysis. Methods: The study design was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 50 patients who were hospitalized to hemodialysis. The experimental group cool dialysis(n=25) and the control group received only the usual treatment (n=25). The collected data were analyzed using independent t-test to examine study hypothesis. Results: The level of dialytic stability (F=5.53, p=.023) and feeling of fatigue (F=4.01, p<.001) in the experimental group were significantly different from that of the control group. However, the level of pruritus(F=.74, p=.394) and dialysis adequacy(F=1.02, p=.327) in the experimental group were not different from that of the control group. Conclusion: The study findings confirm that cool dialysis as an effective intervention alleviating dialytic stability and feeling of fatigue.
The definitive and effective method for tetanus prevention has contributed to decreased incidence and mortality of tetanus infections in developed countries. On the other hand, there has been a recent increase in incidence due to the lack of awareness of the disease and lack of adherence to preventive measures. Tetanus infections can be fatal. Therefore, prevention must be the utmost priority, followed by aggressive surgical management along with supportive care. The authors present a case of a 59-year-old male patient diagnosed with a generalized tetanus infection from a foot injury. The patient recovered successfully after aggressive surgical debridement and amputation of the infected toe at the metatarsal level, followed by two months of supportive care.
This study was done using a Quasi-experimental research design to determine the effects of social support on compliance with sick role behaviors in hypertensive patients and to know if the effect of the social support on compliance lasted for at least 6 months. The subjects consisted of 81 hypertensive patients who were registered in the Cardio-Vascular OPD at Chonnam National University Hospital. They were divided by random sampling into 42 people for the experimental group and 39 for the control group. Data were gathered from June 3, 1996 to June 10, 1997 through individual interviews using a structured questionnaire. The results of the study were summarized as follows : 1. Compliance with sick role behaviors in hypertensive clients was significantly increased in the experimental group who received social support from the nurse as compared to the control group who did not receive social support(t=15.99. p<.001). 2. The effect of social support on compliance with sick role behaviors in hypertensive clients lasted for 6 months(t=7.99, p<.001). 3. Four of six people stopped smoking in experimental group after the intervention of social support, but none of the five in control group were able to stop smoking. Fisher's Exact test showed a significant difference between the experimental and control group(x²=4.385. p< .05). Mantel Haenszel test showed that the effect of social support on stopping smoking in the experimental group lasted for six months because there were no significant differences between one month after the social support and six months after, in the number of subjects who stopped smoking(x²=1.154, P>.05). Finally, social support was effective on compliance with sick role behaviors and stopping smoking in the hypertensive clients, and the effect of social support on compliance lasted for 6 months.

Like each treatment for the psychiatric patients psychotherapeutic approach for the adolescent borderline patients is case by case. However some principles are derived from the characteristics of the adolescent psychology. As they put it adolescence is psychologically 'the second individuation period'. Both sexual dvive and aggressive drive are aggrevated, and 'the actual object' like parent are to be separated. Given that borderline patients are weak in their egos and show poor indentity formation 'analytic supportive psychotherpay' would be more effective than analysis itself.

This study is a qualitative study to identify the educational needs for home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The study participants were 20 patients with home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at a university hospital at D city. Data collected through interviews from July 2016 to September 2017 were analyzed using Krippendorff's method. As a result, 3 categories, 9 themes, 19 sub-themes, and 54 meaningful statements were derived. The three categories of educational needs were 'psychological needs', 'knowledge needs', and 'social needs'. Home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy wanted to support prognosis and stress and receive accurate knowledge of side effects and information on social support systems through education. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development of educational intervention programs for home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in the future.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate effects of foot massage and supportive communication provided by hospice volunteers on depression, anxiety, and mood of cancer patients who are going under intravenous chemotherapy at out patient department (OPD). Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Sixty-four participants were recruited from out-patients setting in a university hospital by a convenient sampling. Two trained- hospice volunteers first provided regular hospice volunteer service to 34 patients in the control group. Subsequently, foot massage and supportive communication were provided to 30 participants in the experimental group. After the intervention, all participants answered the structured questionnaire with visual analog scales on depression, anxiety, and mood including general characteristics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, two sample t-test, and paired t-test by PASW 17. Results: After the intervention, changes in negative moods, i.e. strain and powerlessness in the experimental group were significantly different from those in control group; strain and powerlessness in the experimental group were significantly decreased by foot massage and supportive communication provided by hospice volunteers. Conclusion: The current findings provide an empirical evidence of a brief and efficacious intervention for cancer patients. Further studies are warranted with larger sample size to validate the effectiveness of foot massage and supportive communication as a solid intervention for cancer patients who are undergoing intravenous chemotherapy at OPD.
Extrarenal manifestations of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) have increasingly been recognized and may be major determinants of mortality and morbidity. Although microthrombi are often found in the pulmonary and coronary circulation, apparent lung and cardiac involvement are clinically infrequent. We describe here a 10-month-old boy with HUS who developed pulmonary hemorrhage, acute respiratory distress syndrome and dilated cardiomyopathy. Complete renal as well as clinical recovery from these very uncommon complications was achieved by optimum supportive care.
Purpose: The effects of telephone intervention on self-care practices and quality of life for gynecological cancer patients under chemotherapy was investigated. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was used. The subjects were women cancer patients who had received less than two chemotherapy sessions at C university hospital of Chonnam province(26 in the experimental group: 25 in the control group). The patient's self-care practices(Na & Lee, 1999; Jang, 2004) and quality of life(Lee & Jo, 1997) were measured three times. using a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by Repeated Measures ANOVA, the Friedman test, and the Mann-Whitney test using the SPSS window version 12.0 program. Results: This study showed that the score of self-care practices and quality of life for the experimental group under telephone counseling were higher than those of the control group. Conclusion: This study revealed that a telephone intervention as supportive nursing care for women cancer patients under going chemotherapy was effective for self-care practices and qualify of life during the recovery period. Futhermore, this study also suggests that telephone counseling can serve as a continuing nursing supportive intervention for women cancer patients for the upcoming stages of further chemotherapy.
