  • Recently, the depth of tunnel constructed is getting deeper, which increases difficulty in construction works. Deliberate tunneling techniques are needed as the span and length of tunnels are increased. As one of the technical developments for tunnel, U-shaped and reinforced spider lattice girders are developed by optimizing the spider used in 95mm lattice girder as tunnel steel ribs. In order to evaluate the load bearing capacity of the lattice girder, the 4-point flexural tests are carried out. For the laboratory tests, straight specimens are made for the existing lattice girder and the new lattice girder. The results of the flexural tests showed that the maximum load bearing capacity of the new lattice girders was higher than the traditional one. The load-displacement behavior of the test specimens showed the elasto-plastic behavior in the existing lattice girder and the stress softening behavior in the new lattice girder. It was found that the load bearing capacities are changed depending on the location of the loading points.

  • Recent experiments show the existence of spacer grid improves the heat removal from the fuel rods during the reflood phase of LOCA. The local heat transfer within and downstream of the grid is increased due to the earlier quenching than rod surface, shattering of the entrained droplets into smaller ones which can be more easily evaporated and enhanced turbulent effect. Therefore, the consideration of these phenomena is necessary for the DFFB regime which prevails above the water level during the reflood. In this paper, droplet breakup model at spacer grid has been developed and incorporated into RELAP5/MOD2. Verification calculations are carried out for FEBA tests which examine the thermalhydraulic performance of grid spacer during reflood.

  • A spacer grid assembly is one of the most important structural components in a Light Water Reactor(LWR) nuclear fuel assembly. In the case of the Zircaloy spacer grid assembly, the primary design consideration is to ensure that lateral dynamic crush strength of the spacer grid assembly is sufficient to resist design basis loads and thereby prevent seismic accidents, without a significant increase in the hydraulic head loss for the reactor coolant in the reactor core. In this study, factors affecting the lateral dynamic crush strength of a spacer grid assembly were analyzed by performing lateral dynamic crush tests and finite element analyses. Further, an effective and economical method to enhance the lateral dynamic crush strength of the spacer grid assembly is proposed.

  • A spacer grid, which is one of the structural components in a PWR fuel, is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps that are welded at the intersections to form an egg-crate structure. The spacer grid is required to have sufficient lateral crush strength to enable nuclear reactor shut-down during abnormal operating environments. Previous studies on the lateral crush strength analysis of the spacer grid were performed using only the base material properties. In this study, to investigate the effect of the lateral crush strength of the spacer grid when using the mechanical properties in the weld zone instead of the base material properties, lateral crush strength analysis by considering the mechanical properties in the weld zone as obtained from the instrumented indentation technique was performed, and the results were compared with those of previous studies.

  • The local hydraulic characteristics in a single phase flow of a 6$\times$6 rod bundle with neighboring different spacer grids were measured by using a LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter) system. 6$\times$6 rod bundle is formed by two 3$\times$6 rod bundles with different spacer grids. The objective of this study in a rod bundle is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic interactions between different spacer grids with different configurations and resistance. By using a LDV system, the velocity and turbulent intensity in axial and horizontal directions ore measured. Pressure drop measurements ore also performed to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. Implications concerning thermal mining due to spacer grids were investigated based on the hydraulic test results. Swirl factor, which is assumed as a qualitative criteria for DNB(departure from nucleate boiling), was defined and estimated from the horizontal velocity result.

  • The forced convection heat transfer performance of a twist-vane spacer grid for a dual-cooled annular fuel assembly was examined experimentally. The twist-vane spacer grid was uniquely designed to enhance mixing inside subchannels and mixing between adjacent subchannels. For testing, a $4{\times}4$ square-arrayed rod bundle with narrow gaps between rods was prepared as the dual-cooled annular fuel assembly to be simulated. The pitch-to-rod diameter ratio of simulated dual-cooled annular fuel assembly was 1.08. The experiments were performed under the following conditions: axial bulk velocity, 1.5 m/s and heat flux, $26kW/m^2$. With regard to the circumferential temperature distribution, the lowest rod-wall temperatures upstream and downstream were measured at the subchannel center and the position toward the tip of twist-vane, respectively. With regard to the axial temperature distribution, behind the twist-vane spacer grid, the rod-wall temperature decreased drastically, and the Nusselt number was enhanced by up to 56 %. The present measured data indicate that the twist-vane spacer grid can effectively improve the forced convection heat transfer in the dual-cooled annular fuel assembly with narrow gaps.

KAERI has obtained US and Korean patents for 6 kinds of spacer grid shapes among them. Tn this study. performance test on two spacer grid shapes that are assumed to be the most effective candidates for the spacer grid of the next generation nuclear fuel in Korea was carried Qui through the mechanical/structural test and analysis. The test result has shown thai the performances of the candidates are better or not worse than that of the current spacer grid.
