  • Geotourism is an essential sector of geopark, as it stimulates sustainable development, local socioeconomic development as well as educational effects, from which geo-scientific knowledge can be communicated between the local people and the public. It is also a rapidly growing paradigm of nature-based tourism and is attractive in terms of its year-round accessibility to the sites. Passing over a decade history, it is necessary to present how it can establish a platform for further development and improvement across the country. In this regard, this study is to demonstrate how to develop geotourism model that is effectively applicable to Korean environment based on the enhancement of geotourism. We apply the general geotourism organization model to Haegeumgang in Geojedo Island in this study. Although this area is well known for its small boat tours, privately-guided-tour on the boat is insufficient in terms of delivering geological and geographical information from the geotourism perspective. Therefore, in order to develop the desirable Korean geotourism model, boat tours at Haegeumgang have to be supported professionally by the local government through the geotourism department and the partnership with the stakeholders.

  • The researcher has examined about the infrastructure of geotourism industry as well as domestic and foreign literatures in order to see the future and present status of geotourism in our country. The researcher have concluded the followings after participating in the interpretive program of Taean haean(coastal) National Park, etc. which is thought to as having relatively well-prepared contents and education in addition to the active progress of the program especially. First, although the domestic infrastructure of geotourism is thought as relatively well-established, one needs to make up for the weak point that there are not enough editions of explanations related to land formation process and geological aspects. Second, the interpretive program operated by The Korea National Service Park needs to specialize what the program is all about, how it is operated, who is operating, and so on in order to bring subjects' characteristics into relief. Third, one needs to train the persons required to explain geomorphic landscape and geological features by establishing the new division of education of geomorphic landscape and geological features. Furthermore, one needs to set up a unit to take charge of geotourism within the central and local governments. Fourth, one needs to build the cooperative system of private-public-academic circles among private companies, government, and universities to promote the quality of interpretive program by close connections with related studies of geography and geology. Fifth, the vitalization of geotouriusm can make an enormous contribution to promote the nation's brand value and image by advertizing domestic beautiful landscapes of the nature in addition to creating new job markets. Thus, the financial support in the government level should be made. Sixth, one needs to dig out global resources of geotourism unique to us by developing the stories connecting with local cultures and histories.

  • There exist plenty of geomorphological resources in Haean Basin, Yonghwasan Mt., and Gandong Basin in Eastern DMZ area in Gangwon Province which can be used as geotourism resources. Meticulous strategies are necessary to improve the geotourism bases in such a mountainous region. Potential geosites including Yongneup and Simjeog wetlands are nearby, so it is necessary to include these geosites when planning geotourism courses. The values of these sites coinciding with the goal of geopark are as follows: this region shows contrasting landforms derived from distinctive rocks such as gneiss and biotite granite, and there are many landforms derived from differential weathering of granite too. They can be used to explain the developmental history of numerous basin structures in entire Korean peninsula.

  • Geoheritage is designated to preserve geodiversity of geological and geomorphological cases. Geotourism is an extensive activity that aims at the understanding of geology and earth's history for the geoheritage and for developing regions through preserving the geodiveristy of geoheritage. Igidae-Oryukdo is geosite of Busan National Geopark and its visitors are expected to grow rapidly. Accordingly, for the effective use of the geosites, The development and application of geotourism is required. This study suggests that tuffacious sedimentary rocks, hornblende megacrysts-bearing dike, copper mine, marine potholes should designated as the central points for advanced learning stage; volcanic breccia, sea caves, sea cliffs, wavecut platform, tor and islands as the central points for basic learning stage. Based on this central points, this study established concepts for getourism in this study area at basic and expert level for individual and family tourists, and also small or large groups such as school students.

  • There are three natural conservation systems that UNESCO assigns: World Heritage, Biosphere Reserve and Geopark. Geopark is one of three preservation zones that UNESCO conducts. In this paper I will explain the meaning of a Geopark as well as suggest that one should be set up in Korea. Geotourism is one important aspect of Geopark. Geopark's main purpose is not only for sightseeing but also conservation and understanding the value of nature through geological and geographical features. I have analyzed the local guide's interpretations from a Hongdo Island cruise tour and suggested new way of interpretation for the tour with the concept of Korean Geotourism in mind.

  • This paper aims to study its preservation and practical application on the basis of analysis on geomorphic landscape and trail of Hwayang-Gugok(華陽九曲). The main results are as follows. 1) There are various and beautiful granitic landforms in Hwayang-Gugok. 2) The scene of Hwayang-Gugok are geomorphic resources worthy of the world cultural heritage in a point of view of relations between geomorphic landscapes and Neo-Confucianism. 3) The best effective application of Hwayang-Gugok may be geotourism. The explanatory plates to describe easily Hwayang-Gugok and training of many skilled guides are also necessary for improving the efficiency of geotourism. 4) Not only landscape restoration but also preservation of geomorphic landscapes in Hwayang-Gugok are required for sustainable geotourism, and improvements based on the results to be analysed in this paper are investigated.

  • Many different Visitor Guide Programs are active in order to explain the park-visitors of the superiority of National Park ecosystems and to make them aware of the importance of national park conservation. One of those VGPs is Nature Observation Trail. In this study, we analyzed the course and program of Sangui Nature Observation Trail in Juwangsan National Park. We suggest new course and interpretation plates to make explorers understand their contents easily.

  • Geoturism has been discussed from multiple perspectives in geomorphology and geology as well as tourism domain since 2000. As of May 2013, 172 academic papers and reports on Geoturism have been published in domestic journals. Themes of these researches can be categorized into 6 topics: resource development (i.e. natural resource development, cultural resource development, development of geopark), conservation and management, geoturist, local resident participation and public relations marketing, political approaches. Resource development among those topics has been treated the most: development and utilization of important geomorphological and geological landscape resources, storytelling development about cultual resources, contents development for geopark. On the whole, it is significant that geotourism is actively discussed in geography domain such as geomorphology rather than in geology domain. Up to date, those topics have also been treated only in certain academic areas. In the future researches, efforts for the balance among those topics and creating new themes from various research areas is necessary. Moreover, community networking among locals-municipalities-academia is also necessary to increase local participants.

  • This study is to develop a Geotourism program focused on Taean Haebyeongil course 5 (coastal walkway) and to introduce an explanation board to revitalize an effective Geotourism program of the Taeanhaean National Park. Generally Geotourism program is developed by analyzing topography, geology and cultural resources of the Taean Haebyeongil course 5. An explanation board, which is revitalizing an effective Geotourism program can be used when explaining each trekking courses and providing information about observable geological features to the visitors. This study suggested a new method of explaining geological features and cultural resources to visitors of the Taeanhaean National Park. Additionally, developing a new program of Taean Haebyeongil, is believed to provide a diversity of locational contents to visitors. Hopefully this new program will boost the tourism business of Taean Haebyeongil.
