  • The purpose of this study was to explore the social workers' reflections developed during the participatory action research seeking practice methods in the community welfare center single parent self-help groups. Nine social workers and researchers sharing difficulties in the community welfare center single parent self-help group practice were involved in the participatory action research. We performed a circulatory research repeating 'plan-action-reflection-replan' cycles through ten sessions of research meetings including peer supervision in parallel with 4 self-help group practices. Multiple practice methods were derived as the result among which change in the social workers' perception was the key. We focused on the result that the social workers' perception was changed by reflections from participatory action research and the contents of the reflections were qualitatively analyzed using materials acquired during the study. As a result the following 5 themes were derived; 'recognition and worry on the lack of appropriate practice for the self-help group', 'specification of the social workers' role based on the changed perspective on the member-social worker relation', 'confirmation of the possibility of the concerned person initiated practice', 'detailed understanding of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center', and 'renewed recognition of the development of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center'. Based on these results, empowerment and reflection/reflective practice for single parent self-help group in the community welfare center were discussed.

본 논문은 지역사회 산림의 현황과 임업 발전에 있어서 지역주민 참여의 이점과 문제점을 SWOT(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) 분석을 통해 구명하고자 하였다.

  • Volunteering has been defined as a form of altruistic helping behavior directed at improving other's welfare. Volunteering is, however, also identified as a type of collective action for community welfare. In this regard, this study tests whether neighborhood member's network and collective identity are more important determinants to explain participation in volunteer work than altruistic or normative motivation. This study estimates a model in which volunteering is determined by empathy, normative beliefs, neighborhood networks(friendship, contacts, and integration), and identity as a neighborhood member. This study shows that empathy, normative beliefs, and collective identity as a neighborhood member have significant impacts on participation in volunteer work. In addition, this study reveals that neighborhood member's network has an indirect impact on volunteering through identity as a neighborhood member. These results suggest that neighborhood community member's ties and collective identity are important sources for community welfare and collective volunteer work.

  • The pilot project for type diversification of self-sufficient support center that convert the centre corporation into social cooperative was introduced in 2015. That aimed to increase the number of participants of self-sufficient programmes and to create more jobs for the working poor through expanding the center's autonomy of usage of budget and arrangement of self-sufficient programmes. This study analyzed the organization transmitting processes and changes of the centers took part in the pilot project, then aimed to suggest the improvement schemes to be helpful for reinforcing positive efforts and removing obstacles in the process converting. The results show that converting into social cooperative is a choice for the sustainability of the centers led by surroundings rather than self-initiated plan. There are some positive changes that are increasing the enterprising spirit and obligation of the center staff. Further more, the cooperation with other community organizations is enhanced based on achieving regional recognition, and support of local governments and the opportunity for new businesses are expanded. However, these are very limited in the regions where social economy is undeveloped. Eventually, we should seek the development schemes of the pilot project considering the reduction of the number of participants in self-sufficient programmes and decreasing of their ability to work, even if some positive aspects are revealed.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to develop a participatory learning process and apply it to community empowerment for health promotion. Methods: The participatory learning sessions were composed of three stages according to the modified Freirean model of empowerment education. Stage 1 of generating themes (listening stage) was replaced with a community health forum. Stage 2 of problem-posing was executed via a two-session small group brainstorming discussion for selecting priority community health problems and strategies to solve them. Stage 3 of act-reflect-act, the implementation of the chosen strategies, is ongoing. We tested the feasibility of the participatory learning processes in the pilot programs for health education. Then, 14 Myeon (or Dong) Health Committee members used them in Health Plus Happiness Plus projects for community empowerment to achieve health equity in Gyeongsangnam-Do, Korea. Results: In the pilot program for feasibility, more than 80% of the 95 participants gave positive responses to evaluation questionnaires after three or four participatory learning sessions. Health Committee members successfully selected various strategies relevant to their communities with facilitation, but without any teaching from outside professionals. Conclusions: We successfully applied the participatory learning process to health promotion. However, more studies are warranted to evaluate its long-term applicability.

  • This study aims to provide important data for community-centered rehabilitation by examining factors influencing community participation after the onset of stroke. The study subjects were 100 patients with a stroke for more than six months. Korean Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique (K-CHART) was conducted to determine the level of participation of subjects, and Korean-Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) was conducted to examine the factors influencing the community participation of the subjects to determine the level of independence of activities of daily living. As a result, the relevant factors of community participation in stroke patients were as follows. Physical independence, cognitive independence, mobility, work, and social integration of stroke patients showed higher explanatory power than engagement in activities of daily living, age, and employment. Also, physical independence, cognitive independence, mobility, work, and social integration were factors that affected participation. All items were statistically significant (p <.01). It is considered that this study will contribute to providing information for focusing on occupational therapy for increasing the social participation of stroke patients, and proper evaluation and intervention will work as essential rehabilitation factors for improving participation with respect to the influential factors of participation.
