  • Objective : This study aimed to investigate the awareness and experience of community-based dysphagia therapy and related education in community-dwelling older adults. Methods : A total of 89 older adults were recruited from a public health center in Gyeonggi-do. Awareness, experience, and related education regarding community-based dysphagia therapy were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results : We analyzed 89 questionnaires. Awareness, treatment experience, and education regarding dysphagia were low; however, the importance and intention to participate were high. Respondents wanted education about proper chewing and safe swallowing, oral health, oral motor exercise, and participation in community-based dysphagia programs in public health centers. The reason for the lack of experience in dysphagia education and therapy is insufficient information and opportunities. The respondents had a good understanding of dysphagia symptoms. Conclusion : Dysphagia therapy maintains swallowing and eating functions as a life-long Activity of Daily Living, and is a very important area in community rehabilitation. Based on the results of this survey, the necessity and importance of community-based dysphagia were identified. It is time to provide correct information and develop a systematic education program for community-based dysphagia therapy. Occupational therapists need to play an active role in improving quality of life by early detection and providing proper intervention.

  • This study aims to identify factors affecting the young and middle-aged people's stigma against older adults. By identifying the factors, solutions to lower stigma against older adults can be found. For this study, data from '2017 Age Integration Survey' sponsored by National Research Foundation of Korea and collected on March 2017 were used. Subjects of this study are 854 survey participants residing in 15 districts of South Korea. They are 480 young people aged from 18 to 44 and 374 middle-aged people aged from 45 to 64. T-test, Chow test and Multiple Regression Analysis by SPSS were conducted for the data. These are the results. Both the young and middle-aged people have a similarly high level of stigma against older adults. However, there are significant differences in the variables affecting the level of stigma against older adults between the two age groups. Two common variables affecting stigma against older adults in young and middle-aged people are the recognition of how older adults are depicted in media and age flexibility. The better they recognize discrimination against older adults in media and what an age flexible society is like, the stronger stigma against older adults they tend to have. On the other hand, sex, average monthly income and the opinion on how people treat older adults in their community are significant variables only for the young people. And living district is a significant variable only for the middle-aged people. The significance of this study is that it conceptualized 'stigma' as a cause for discrimination against older adults and focused on the stigmatizing subject, who are the young and middle-aged people, not the stigmatized subject, who are older adults in order to find solutions for lowering stigma against older adults.

  • Elderly males in retirement experiencing a change in their social status and role in the family are likely to develop negative perception toward the elderly and the elderly life. The purpose of this study is to examine how the experiences of age discrimination affect elderly male's perception and his attitude towards the elderly life, and to verify the mediation effects of the family and peer relations, which would necessitate the need for social welfare intervention. 215 participants, the elderly men registered at the welfare centers in Seoul Metropolitan area, participated in this research utilizing the structural equation modeling to verify the mediation effect. The findings are as follows. First, the elderly males's experiences of age discrimination is found not to have a significant effect on their perception towards the elderly. Second, the elderly males' discrimination experience has a significant effect on their attitude towards the elderly life. Third, it is found out that family function and peer relationship has complete mediation effect on the perception on the elderly experiencing discrimination in their perception towards the elderly life. Fourth, the family function and peer relationship has partial mediation effect on the elderly male experiencing discrimination in their attitude toward their life after retirement. This shows that more efforts are needed to reduce discrimination towards the elderly, and that strong family function and peer relations help the elderly to develop more positive perception and attitude towards the elderly life. In conclusion, it proposes an institutional approach towards the problem as well as increased support for elderly welfare service including family counseling intended to strengthen family function and alternative family, and more active social activities aimed at strengthening of peer relationship.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between diabetes empowerment, health perception, and diabetes self-care behaviors with diabetes for the elderly in the community, and to identify the factors affecting diabetes self-care behavior in the elderly with diabetes. A survey was conducted on 80 diabetic elderly people over the age of 65 who were registered at a local public health center. The mean age was 71.15 years, and 41 males and 39 females were included. Diabetes self-care behavior showed a significant positive correlation with economic status (r=.245, p=.029) and diabetes empowerment (r=.406, p<.001), but health perception (r=.127, p=.263) did not show a significant correlation. As a result of this study, diabetes empowerment and economic status of the diabetic elderly were found to be significant influencing factors on diabetes self-care behavior in the diabetic elderly, and the explanatory power of the model was 19.6% (F=10.623, p<.001). Therefore, if a community program is developed to improve the diabetes empowerment of the elderly with diabetes in the community and economic support policies are also provided at the level of public health, it will be possible to improve the self-care behavior of the elderly with diabetes in the community.
