  • This study examines 2014 National Survey on Older Koreans (10,279 persons aged 65 or above) to understand social networks among older Koreans. In order to classify the types of social relationships, the latent profile analysis is conducted based on such structural aspects of social networks as network size, frequencies of contact, and closeness. The results show that older Koreans can be categorized into 5 distinct social network types: disengaged (11.6%), ritual-family-focused (17.7%), close-family-focused (23.6%), close-restricted (28,4%), and diverse (18.8%). Characteristics by each social network type are compared and multinominal logistic regression analyses are applied to figure out the influencing factors of social network type. Older persons with disengaged social network ties tend to be overwhelmingly female, living alone, old-old, and of low socioeconomic status. On the other hand, older persons with diverse social network ties tend to be young-old and had highly-ranked jobs in their mid-life. Spouse/children are the focal point of social relationships in both ritual-family-focused and close-restricted social network. However, the proportion of men is higher in the close-family-focused type than in the ritual-family-focused. Older Koreans with close-restricted social network ties tend to be female, uneducated, and have engaged in agricultural and allied activities. This study discusses the implications of its findings and how research in this area should develop in the future.

It is usual that their business activities and viability are dependent upon localized resources in terms of a labor market, raw material procurement and sales market. Also, the characteristics and viability of social enterprises based on local resources within the framework of social economy policy. The social economic policy in Korea is generally treated as means of local developments. This paper aims to examine the localness and socio-economic foundation of social enterprises which are located in the west of Gyeongnam province in Korea and to provide policy recommendations for promoting local resource-based social enterprises. The selection of the case study firms was chosen by considering various factors such as the viability of the firm, location of a company and the types of organization. The research result shows that most of local social enterprises had a viability and profitability to effectively utilize local resources. But it is claimed that the government policy for promoting local social enterprises reveals some limitations to promoting effectively local social enterprises. First, it is necessary to limit the qualification of applying to the government support program. Second, financial support should be changed from hardware-centered programs to software-centered programs such as training and education for human resource development and the business consulting. Finally, it is necessary for the government policy to focus on follow-up programs for firms which are no more capable of receiving the government financial support. For these firms, the government policy needs to focus on facilitating activities of cooperation between local universities and local social enterprise.

  • This study investigated the agglomeration process of the towel industry in the Daejeon and Chungcheong regions, which are located in the mid-western part of South Korea, focusing in particular on industrial restructuring. Moreover, it aimed to identify the spatial features of the towel industry by analyzing the subcontracting linkages and to discover the implications of such linkages on government policy. The towel industry in the Daejeon and Chungcheong regions began to grow from the end of the Korean War when textile technicians from North Korea settled down in this area, spreading their techniques and know-how within the region. Later, in the 1980s, the industry underwent restructuring when companies within the region strengthened their linkages through corporate specialization based on the concept of social division of labor. Accordingly, the industrial linkages and linkage spaces, as well as characteristics of the industry, should all be considered to develop and implement policies for the regions of the towel industry.
