  • This study was conducted to examine characteristics of rhizome growth and flowering of white lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) plant in Muan Hoesan-lake for collecting the basic data on the cultivation and the flowering which is growing in Muan Hoesan-lake of Jeonnam province in Korea. We have planted from the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes of the white lotus which were planted in the plastic containers on April 20 and May 4, 2008, and cultivated under rain shelter condition. Rhizome growth pattern and the flowering characteristics of the white lotus were examined on September 4, 2008. Main rhizomes of the white lotus propagated by the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes were branched by 10% and 15%, respectively. Numbers of nodes in the bloomed and non-bloomed rhizomes of the white lotus were over 14 and below 11, respectively. Flower was not observed in the white lotus when propagated with seeds, however, flowers came out up to 80% by the enlarged rhizomes. First flowers were bloomed from the late July and to the early August, and the number of flowers were 4.0~4.4. The first flower stalks without branching of the main rhizome were emerged in 8.8th node, however, that with branching were 8.0th node. Time to flowering from the emergence of flower stalk on the above-ground parts were required 16 days. White flowers from the lotus were 15.3 cm in height and 28.2 cm in width, their longevity was 3.3 days and the averaged flower fresh weight was 29.2 g. The results conclude that optimum number of nodes on the main rhizomes for blooming the white lotus flowers should be over 8 nodes before the rhizome enlargement.

  • This study was conducted to determine the characteristics and utilization of pruned kiwifruit branches as wreath materials. Amount of pruned branches produced from one 11~15 year-old kiwi plant cv. 'Hayward' can be used for one wreath with 76cm in diameter. Making a wreath with 76cm in diameter with the pruned kiwifruit branches required 75 branches with 31~40cm length. And the cost to make a wreath with 76cm in diameter for the Keaki and the paper bush were cheeper than those of winged spindle tree and Korean dogwood. Floral designers evaluated that the glossy, the delicacy and the unique form of cut branches, and their various hue were lower than that of the commonly-used cut branches, however, the beauty of curved line, the characteristics after drying, and the utilization and prospect of pruned kiwi branches were higher by 'over good' than that of the commonly-used branches. Consequently, it was assumed that the utilization of pruned kiwifruit branches can be contributed to the improvement of side income for a farm household, and the diversity wreath materials.

  • This study was conducted with the purpose of deriving a revitalization plan by analyzing the factors influencing the characteristics and perception of self-employment and self-employment selection of young people. To this end, discussions on self-employment and the size of workers were reviewed, and the characteristics, determinants, and difficulties of self-employment youth were analyzed based on data from a survey of youth in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The support plan proposed through the analysis should first strengthen the program so that the government, local governments, and schools can all gain experience in the practice of developing ideas, producing, and selling based on aptitude and competency to solve youth employment problems. Next, compared to support for technology-based start-ups, there are no suitable programs in the fields of knowledge, manufacturing, and distribution, and there is almost no support for freelancers in which the majority of young people are engaged. Therefore, it is necessary to diversify support projects so that the diversity of young people can be expressed in self-employment. Finally, it was found that entrepreneurship had an important influence on self-employment. However, Korean teenagers do not know what entrepreneurship is and have no experience in education, so they should focus on cultivating entrepreneurship in the regular curriculum and establishing a cultural foundation to foster young leaders with creative ideas and execution.
