This study investigated settlement and scouring characteristics of artificial reef reinforced with various reinforcement types to reduce settlement and scouring. Three reinforcement types were prepared: geogrid, geogrid-bamboo mat (GBM) and seaweed-pile mat (SPM). Various laboratory tests such as bearing capacity test, large size settlement test, two-dimensional flow scour test were performed according to different soil types (sand, silt, clay). Laboratory test results indicated that bearing capacity of seabed with a reinforced artificial reef increased and its settlement and scour depth reduced for all reinforcement types. Especially, reinforcement effect tends to be greater in clay soft ground rather than sand and silt grounds.
In this study, characteristics of consolidation settlement of soft grounds adapting preloading method and vertical drain method were compared. A real measurement settlement is compared with predicted one by the future settlement prediction method like the Asaoka's method, the Hyperbolic method and the Hoshino method. A accuracy of predicted future settlement by the Asaoka's method is relatively higher than the Hyperbolic method or the Hoshino method generally. But in the area conducted with the vertical drain method, settlement prediction accuracy of three methods is similar unlike popular beliefs; Asaoka's is the better method for prediction than others. The study area is also confirmed by investigation of the drainage system after applying the change through the N values, soil physical and mechanical properties were investigated, and physical properties are improved.
It has been a growing concern how to use Nanji-Island landfill and other refuse landfills located around metropolitan areas. In this paper, settlement characteristics of Nanji -Island landfill were studied by analyzing the data collected over the period of two years. The settlement characteristics were similar to the analyzed settlement characteristics of 24 refuse landfills in the United States. The model proposed by Bjarngard and Edger(1990) model is considered to be suitable for the long-term prediction of Wnil -Island landfill. The ten-year -period prediction value of Bjarngard and Edger (1990) model is considerably different from that of Power Creep Model. If existing settlement models used for long-term prediction of the settlement characteristics of landfill are not analyzed thoroughly there remains the possibility of including considerable prediction errors.
Ground subsidence occurring in mine area can cause an enormous damage of loss of lives and properties, and a systematic survey should be conducted a series of field investigation and ground stability analysis in subsidence area. This study describes the results from field investigation and ground stability analysis in a limestone mine located in Cheongwon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. Rock mechanical measurements and electrical resistivity surveys are applied to obtain the characteristics of in-situ rock masses and the distribution patterns of subsurface weak zone, and their results are extrapolated in numerical analysis. From the field investigation and stability analysis, it is concluded that the subsidence occurrence in this limestone mine is caused mainly by subsurface limestone cavities.
The analysis of ground subsidence stability was conducted for the residential area located on the limestone corrosion zone. For the investigation of the cavity distribution in limestone region, various geophysical investigations such as electroresistivity tomography, electromagnetic prospecting are carried out. Geotechnical field tests with drilling are also carried out for the evaluation of the ground characteristics. Based upon their results, numerical modeling is performed for the simulation and prediction of the ground subsidence with the conditions of cavity geometry and groundwater level. The main factor to cause the ground subsidence is estimated as the draw down of the groundwater level below soil overburden, which disturbs the mechanical equilibrium of ground and drives washing away the overburden soil through the cavity and solace subsidence. It seemed that it is essential to maintain the groundwater level continuously above the shallow cavity for the prevention of the ground subsidence on the limestone corrosion zone.
To effectively improve soft soils, it is necessary to perform ground behavior characteristics and stability management through measurement activities when embankment of structures on soft soils is conducted. However, there are many differences between the actual ground behavior and the initial design plan. To address this issue, this study analyzed the measured settlement in the Yeongam-Haenam areas using the Hyperbolic method to predict the settlement based on the measurement data. From the completion time of the embankment in the target area, the final settlement was predicted through the change in the degree of consolidation by the measurement period. Furthermore, the final settlement according to the change in degree of consolidation was compared and analyzed through finite element analysis and field measurement.
Efficient database and DBMS are essential for GIS analysis of subsidence in the abandoned mine area. A data structure and a suitable analysis method were proposed for an efficient analysis of subsidence in the abandoned mine area. Data models for the location of mine, ground water level, subsidence measurement and subsidence cracks were defined and structured to the database.
