The following results were obtained by analyzing the displacement, strain and stability of ground at the soft ground excavation using sheet pile. 1. Before setting the strut, the horizontal displacement was large on the upper part of excavated side, but after setting the strut, it showed concentrated phenomenon while being moved to go down to the excavated side. 2. After setting the strut, the displacement of sheet pile was rapidly decreased about a half compared with before setting the strut. The limitation of excavation depth was shown approximately GL-8m after setting double stair strut. 3. Maximum shear strain was gradually increased with depth of excavation, and local failure possibility due to shear deformation at the bottom of excavation was decreased by reinforcement of strut. 4. Maximum horizontal displacement of sheet pile at GL-7.5m was shown 0.2% of excavation depth in elasto-plastic method, and 0.6% in finite-element methods, and the maximum displacement was occurred around the bottom of excavation. 5. To secure the safety factor about penetration depth in the ground of modeling, D/H should be more than 0.89 in the case of one stair strut, and more than 0.77 in the case of double stair strut. 6. The relation of safety factor and D/H about the penetration depth was appeared, Fs=0.736(D/H) + 0.54 in the case of one stair strut, and Fs=0.750(D/H) + 0.62 in the case of double stair strut.
This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analyses of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover (H) was higher than four times the diameter, can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than that obtained by Ring-cut split method. In addition, the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

A new approach for prediction of a fault zone ahead of tunnel face by using statistical control charts is suggested and applied to the construction site. $x-R_s$ control charts of RMR parameters were investigated as approaching and passing through fault zone. The abnormal signal from the control charts was observed and analyzed based on statistical criteria. Fault zones in the application area were predicted in advance using this method and it was verified by comparing with observation data like horizontal boring and face mapping.
In the land section of marine bridge construction site, to confirm the end bearing of large diameter drilled shaft constructed in the fault zone which was discovered unexpectedly, the hi-directional end loading tests were performed. The objectives of this study are to confirm the end bearing of the pile constructed in fault zone and the increasing effect of end bearing after grouting the base ground beneath the pile toe. After grouting the pile base ground, the settlement of pile base decreased considerably and the pile base resistance increased more than twice.

In the present study, we investigated the physical characteristics of ground water behaviors and sediment properties in intertidal flat of Nakdong River Estuary. Variations in level and temperature of the groundwater depended on tides. And increase of river discharge led to increase in groundwater level and decrease in ground salinity at a depth of several ten cm. Difference in permeability of the intertidal flat sediments due to content of fine fraction affect velocity of groundwtaer level decrease at low tide. Furthermore, enhancement of groundwater flow due to the increase in permeability leaded to decrease of fine fraction in the intertidal flat sediments.
The purpose of this study is to understand the ground change of large scale mountainous region and to estimate the active weak zone using geophysical exploration (electrical resistivity and refraction seismic explorations) in large scale deep landslide area located in Wanjugun, Jeollabukdo. We also analyzed the characteristics of deep landslides occurred in metamorphic rocks region and confirmed the approximate scale. As a result of comparative analysis of N-value by standard penetration test (SPT), low resistivity anomaly, and tension crack identified from field investigation, a discontinuity in soil layer was estimated at 10 ~ 15 m below the surface. Based on this results, the distribution pattern of active weak zone was confirmed between the discontinuity in soil layer and estimation line of bedrock.
Large-scale collapse happened under excavation construction in the past. But, recently the trend that it is completed safely to minimize damages is growing because of increasing levels of design review and detecting signs of problems before the outbreak of large-scale collapse with proactive planning of measurement. In this paper, through studying case collapses over the past, it put the cause of the collapse in order. And then, after reviewing general information on management and utilization of measurement methods which importantly emerging recently, the type and cause of the problem during the excavation was reviewed. And the causes of problem were analyzed by targeting the site which unusual symptoms happened on measuring results under construction. In this study, the awareness that measurement management and subsurface investigation is highly important will increase for preventing large-scale collapse in advance.
Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic method(EM) has the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There are a lot of available techniques and instruments which have different depth of investigation and resolution depending on the operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. Furthermore, it is very easy to apply on the engineering and environmental problems since modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Even though electromagnetic theory is very complex and not easy to understand, rapid avances in recent computer technology have made it possible to conduct accurate forward modeling and inversion of various EM exploration data. Here, we are going to provide brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.
This research is aimed at investigating the dynamic response of cut-and-cover tunnel to seismic waves. We carried out shaking table test which is used a 1/40-scale(the width of prototype tunnel is about 14.2m, the height is about 8.5m) model for this research, and we analyzed the effect of depth of tunnel and slope of the ground in relation to the dynamic responses of tunnel. As a result of the test, the stress and acceleration along the tunnel decreased accordingly to the depth of increment, and this phenomenon is caused by the increase of the confining effect of ground. Also, the dynamic responses of tunnel showed a tendency to rise according as ground declined gently. In comparison the result of shaking table test with that of structural analysis on ordinary condition, we conclude that seismic waves do not affect cut-and-cover tunnel when the depth of tunnel is over the diameter of tunnel.
Environmental problems typically occurring in abandoned mine lands (AML) include: contaminated and acidic surface water and groundwater; stockpiled waste rock and mill tailings; and ground subsidences due to mining operations. This study examines the effectiveness of various geophysical techniques for mapping potential hazard and contaminated zones. Four AML sites with sedimentation contamination problems, acid mine drainage (AMD) channels, ground subsidence, manmade liner leakage, and buried mine tailings, were selected to examine the applicability of various geophysical methods to the identification of the different types of mine hazards. Geophysical results were correlated to borehole data (core samples, well logs, tomographic profiles, etc.) and water sample data (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and heavy metal contents). Zones of low electrical resistivity (ER) corresponded to areas contaminated by heavy metals, especially contamination by Cu, Pb, and Zn. The main pathways of AMD leachate were successfully mapped using ER methods (low anomaly peaks), self-potential (SP) curves (negative peaks), and ground penetrating radar (GPR) at shallow penetration depths. Mine cavities were well located based on composite interpretations of ER, seismic tomography, and well-log records; mine cavity locations were also observed in drill core data and using borehole image processing systems (BIPS). Damaged zones in buried manmade liners (used to block descending leachate) were precisely detected by ER mapping, and buried rock waste and tailings piles were characterized by low-velocity zones in seismic refraction data and high-resistivity zones in the ER data.
