  • The Pre-loading method has been widely used for the soft ground stabilization but long construction times and the transport of large quantities of fill material are required. To shorten the construction periods, the vertical drain method is generally applied simultaneously. But the high costs of the fill materials along with environmental damages remain as the main difficulties to apply this method. Therefore, a complimentary way to reduce both the height of the embankment and the consolidation time is needed. In this study, the electro-osmosis method, which is able to shorten the consolidation time and minimize the damage of the environment, was performed with a model test. The results show that as the voltage increases the consolidation settlements, consolidation drainage and shear strength also increase while the water content decreases.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate air injection mode on stabilization of landfill gas and to predict the time for landfill mining. It took 8 times longer for pulse aeration to get to aerobic condition, compared to continuous aeration. It was evaluated that continuous aeration mode is more preferable than pulse mode for rapid air exchange in landfill mining. High correlation ($r^2$ = 0.95) was found between continuous aeration time and time to maintain aerobic condition when $0.2m^3/min$ of air was continuously injected and stopped. The aerobic condition ($CH_4$ < 5%) was maintained for 1.5 times longer than aeration time.

  • Tunnel deformation happens by excavation. After installation of support, tunnel is gradually stabilized over time. Effect of excavation on tunnel behavior decreases as increase of distance from face. If the time that the displacement converges by tunnel stabilization is estimated, processes after stabilization can be advanced and economic loss can be reduced. In this study, the distance of displacement convergent point from face in the tunnel constructed on sedimentary rock is estimated using control chart method. As the results of analysis using a control of chart, displacements in a sedimentary rock tunnel are converged within 100 m from each tunnel face.

  • In this study, to prevent possible collapse caused by hydraulic or mechanical instability, liquid nitrogen injection method is developed and implemented at the tip of drilling auger of steel pipe propulsion tunneling. In this study, 1/5-scale model auger and sand chamber were manufactured. The prototype diameter of steel pile (or casing) is assumed about 1,000 mm. For the frictional sandy soils and plastic weathered soils, liquid nitrogen injection methods were tested varying water contents of the soils. For the induced hydraulic instability, the ground near the drilling auger was frozen within approximately 5 minutes preventing mechanical collapse and water infiltration. Securing stability of steel pile propulsion tunneling using liquid nitrogen was much more effective for which the water content of the soil somewhat exceeds the optimum water content.

  • Several soil improvement methods are applied to stabilize soft ground. But, their improvement effects are known to be reduced in view of strength and durability under poor conditions such as marine clay and the ground with the flow of groundwater. The soil improvement method is generally classified as mixing(high pressure) type and injection type, and in this study, for successflll'applications of gelling methods, first in case that mixing method with cement is applied to marine clay, the causes of strength inferiority of treated soil are analyzed, and the effectiveness of improvement is studied, second in case that injection method with water-glass chemical grouts is applied to the ground with the flow of groundwater, soil improvement effects and durability of grouted soil are studied.

  • This paper investigates the stabilization feasibility of contaminated sediment contaminated with benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) using acid/base-modified activated carbon. The efficiency of stabilizers was evaluated by analyzing the impact of the activated carbon on the decomposition and adsorption of the contaminant, along with the biological effects on earthworms. Additionally, the contaminant migration was monitored with the BBP concentration in pore water using low-density polyethylene. The research results indicated that the accumulated concentration of BBP was approximately 2% lower in the experimental group applying a 5% mixture ratio of modified activated carbon compared to the group applying a 10% mixture ratio. The leaching into water was reduced by over 18% in all experimental conditions after 7-day exposure period. Over 25% reduction was observed after 28-day exposure. The pore water concentrations were measured. After 7 days of exposure, the mechanically mixed experimental group exhibited a higher pore water stabilization rate compared to the biologically mixed group. Within the mechanically mixed group, the experimental group with 10% mixture of modified activated carbon showed a 1% higher stabilization rate than the group with 5% mixture. After 28 days of exposure, the biologically mixed experimental group demonstrated a higher pore water stabilization rate compared to the mechanically mixed group. Moreover, within the biologically mixed group, the experimental group with 10% mixture of modified activated carbon showed approximately 0.1% higher stabilization rate than the group with 5% mixture.

  • The bearing capacity of a soil can be improved by conventional ground improvement techniques such as stabilization and compaction methods. Recently, the use of geotextiles in improving the bearing capacity of soils has become popular because of the availability of durable and strong geosynthetic materials. In this paper, through the laboratory model tests on sandy ground reinforced by geotextiles with the strip footing under plane strain condition, the effects of bearing capacity improvement on the sandy ground and its behaviour were investigated.

  • A case study of the assessment for environmental stabilization in open dumping landfill site was carried out physical composition, total solid, moisture, and landfill gas(LFG) analysis in landfill site. The result of physical ratio were represented combustibles 23.64% and incombustibles 76.36%, TS 77.69%, VS 74.24%, FS 25.75%. The biodegradable organic matters were almost degraded and the result of the landfill gas showed that the $CH_4$ gas were measured as 4.5%. As the result of the assessment on the open dumping landfill it appears that this landfill is stabled for the maturation phase and formation $CO_2$ concentration lower than 15%.
