As the occurrence of ground subsidence near the excavation site increases recently, studies are being conducted to predict the possibility of ground subsidence prior to excavation. In this study, the ground subsidence risk rating for pre-excavation (GSRp) developed by the previous study was applied to actual excavation sites to verify its applicability. The final results for the evaluation of the ground subsidence risk level for five excavation sites revealed that GSRp scores were calculated between 40 and 79 points and classified mainly into grades II (Good Ground)~III (Fair Ground). In order to verify the evaluation method, the obtained GSRp grades were compared with the measured horizontal displacements. The horizontal displacements measured in five excavation sites were between 25% and 47% of the allowable displacement, which were well agreed with the low subsidence risk level obtained from GSRp calculation. It is expected that the GSRp method can be used as an evaluation tool for predicting the risk of ground subsidence before excavation if GSRp is verified and supplemented through the additional research for the poor soil with the high risk of ground subsidence.
Several studies have been conducted to analyze the risk of ground subsidence occurring in urban areas. Recently, the correlation between the density of underground utilities (i.e., the quantity of buried utilities in the analysis area) and the recorded ground subsidence has been explored to analyze such risk through. Choi et al. (2021) proposed an algorithm to optimize the correlation between the ground subsidence and normalized linear density of underground pipelines. In this study, the optimization algorithm was modified for analysis based on the risk grade. The analysis results using the modified optimization algorithm were compared with the correlation analysis results between the density of underground utilities and recorded ground subsidence presented by Choi et al. (2021). Compared with Choi et al. (2021), three analysis results showed equal or higher accuracy in the correlation analysis with recorded ground subsidence according to risk grade. In particular, for R100, it was divided into five grades and compared with the ratio of the recorded ground subsidence that occurred in grades 4 or higher. As a result, Choi et al. (2021) showed that 86% of recorded ground subsidence occurred in grades 4 or higher, whereas this study showed 93%. It was confirmed that the accuracy of the modified optimization algorithm was improved. The modified optimization algorithm can be applied to develop a ground subsidence risk map for each grade in an urban area, which can be used as basic data for decision-making for underground utility maintenance.

Ground subsidence risk ratings obtained from the site investigation during pre-excavation stages could be changed depending on the parameters revealed during construction activities. A method of correcting the pre-excavation ground subsidence risk ratings based on the site conditions observed in the field is suggested in this study. The elevation of groundwater table during the excavation may be different from the predicted value depending on the application of waterproofing methods and construction conditions. The drastic drawdown of groundwater table during the excavation could cause ground subsidence due to soil volume decrease related to consolidation or compression of the ground, whereas the rising of groundwater table caused by the intense rainfall may result in a high potential for ground subsidence due to heaving or boiling of the excavation bottom. Excessive displacements of retaining walls or ground settlements may cause ground subsidence, which also results in a high risk of ground subsidence caused by the destruction of buried pipelines. Reevaluation of ground subsidence risk ratings is suggested considering the fluctuation of groundwater table, condition of groundwater leakage, measured ground displacements, and soil types. Finally, the ground subsidence risk rating system is improved for better evaluation by using 12 factors in 5 categories.
Due to the rapid development of cities, densities and heights of urban structures are increased, and much larger and more underground spaces are being developed accordingly. Increasing development of underground spaces has induced more ground sinks and underground cavities. Therefore, safety of people is threatened by potential ground collapses and possible accidents, which may result from underground cavity. To actively respond against potential danger of ground sink, evaluation of existing cavity grade and development of recovery procedure are important. There exists the ground sinking management grade system of expressway developed as local standards in Japan. Recently, ground sinking management grade system of Seoul was developed with consideration of road and asphalt conditions. In this study, 209 underground cavities of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area were explored and their cavity shapes and grades were evaluated based on both ground sinking management grade systems of Japan and Seoul. Comparison is made between cavity grades evaluated based on both grading systems from Japan and Seoul. As a result of comparative analysis, the conservatively-estimated cavity grades requiring emergency restoration based on the Japanese management grade system of expressway result from neglection of layer thickness of surface pavement, considering only width and cover depth of a cavity.
This study analyzed the differences in the analysis techniques through a comparative analysis of the various segment's modeling techniques of Shield TBM method and proposed reasonable modeling techniques. Also, this study suggested reasonable estimating methods of load to be applicable in the field through the load analysis and three-dimensional finite element analysis by estimating model of rock mass relaxation load. Estimating method of relaxation area by rock mass rating makes no odds of output in subgrade with high rock mass rating, but so the difference of output is large, that is judged to set conservative design off. In estimating result of rock mass relaxation area by three-dimensional analysis relaxation area of subgrade with low-grade soil was predicted to be positioned at medium-range of many methods, in case of designing segment in subgrade with low-grade soil it needs to actively review estimation of relaxation area through three-dimensional analysis reflecting mechanical tunnel excavation.

The recent increase of ground subsidence in Korea requires the development of technology for predicting the possibility of ground subsidence. Eighteen parameters affecting the ground subsidence for pre-excavation are classified into 6 categories considering ground types, groundwater, and external factors. Eighteen parameters consists of a table which gives ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation(GSRp). Certain scores are given to these parameters after they are divided into several classes considering the importance and the credibility of parameters and the engineering judgements of the authors. Because of the difference of ground subsidence factors depending on the ground and field conditions, weighting factors for the individual factor and for the each category are multiplied. Weighting factors are calculated from citation frequencies of influencing factors. Ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation can be quantified by considering the individual score of each parameter and weighting factors for the individual factor and for the each category. The suggested GSRp tables obtained from this study are expected to be used by engineers for the estimation of ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation sites.
Tunnel displacement happens during the process of stress redistribution by tunnelling. Tunnel displacement can be divided into 3 types such as displacements occurring before excavation, non-measured displacements after excavation and measured displacements after excavation. Because measurements of displacements occurring before excavation and non-measured displacement after excavation are difficult and time-consuming in the field, many researchers have studied on total displacement and its characteristics with excavation using numerical analysis. In this study, we used a 3-D back analysis to estimate total displacement by rock mass grades in tunnel constructed in sedimentary rock. We reduced error between measured displacements and calculated displacements from a 3-D numerical analysis, and then estimated suitable rock mass properties by RMR classes. Ultimately, Logistic nonlinear regressions of total displacement with tunnelling were estimated by least square estimation.

Several studies have been conducted to analyze, predict, and prevent the risk of ground subsidence occurring in urban areas. Nevertheless, there is insufficient research effort on risk analysis that utilizes the correlation between the density of underground structures (i.e., the spatial quantity of buried objects installed in the ground around the interested area) and the occurrence of ground subsidence. In this paper, a study was conducted to analyze the line density of underground structures using GIS-based spatial information data, and to link this with the recorded ground subsidences. An optimization algorithm was developed to maximize the correlation between the line density of 29 recorded ground subsidences and 6 types of underground structures that occurred between 2010 and 2015 for the analysis area. The concept of normalized line density was also proposed for the analysis. The normalized line density of the analysis area was divided into five grades (Grade 1: lowest, Grade 5: highest). When the optimization algorithm was applied, the case where the normalized line density was Grade 4 or higher at the location of the recorded ground subsidences was about > 80%. It is thought that the density analysis result of underground facilities can be applied to the ground subsidence risk analysis by using the proposed optimization algorithm.

This study proposes a new methodology for quantitative rock classification in unsampled rock zone, which occupies the most of tunnel design area. This methodology is to train an ANN (artificial neural network) by using results from a drilling investigation combined with electric resistivity survey in sampled zone, and then apply the trained ANN to making a prediction of grade of rock classification in unsampled zone. The prediction is made at the center point of a shifting window by using a number of electric resistivity values within the window as input reference information. The ANN training in this study was carried out by the RPROP (Resilient backpropagation) training algorithm and Early-Stopping method for achieving a generalized training. The proposed methodology is then applied to generate a rock grade distribution on a real tunnel site where drilling investigation and resistivity survey were undertaken. The result from the ANN based prediction is compared with one from a conventional kriging method. In the comparison, the proposed ANN method shows a better agreement with the electric resistivity distribution obtained by field survey. And it is also seen that the proposed method produces a more realistic and more understandable rock grade distribution.
