  • The AC-DC magnetic field standard systems were constructed for the calibration of magnetometers for low magnetic field and the tests for low magnetic field characteristics of sensors and materials. In the range of 1 mT, the expanded uncertainty of dc is 8${\times}$10$\^$-6/, ac uncertainties are 0.16% in 0.1~1 kHz, 0.26% in 1~5 kHz, and 0.44% in 5~20 kHz. We have been participated in international key comparison(KC) to achieve the equality and the mutual agreement between standard institutes for the results of calibrations and tests. KRISS participating in ac-dc magnetic flux density of KC got equal level of uncertainty results compare with the advanced nations. It confirm that measurement ability of magnetic flux density is high level in the world.

  • We have been unwittingly exposed to magnetic field. Biological effects due to electromagnetic field exposure has been studied over the past several decades. There has been epidemiological studies and laboratory studies. In the case of laboratory studies, the effect has been observed through the cell stimulation of an artificial magnetic field. The used frequency and waveform are various in the cell experiment, but the intensity of the magnetic field is usually around 10G. Intensity of Earth's magnetic field is about 300-400mG. Although this intensity is not much higher than artificial magnetic field as 3-4% amplitude, we can't ignore the effect because every living thing on earth has already adapted for long time ago. In this study, we have designed and implemented the 3-axis magnetic field generation system in oder to remove the static magnetic field in the real-time and kept its intensity less than ${\pm}5mG({\pm}0.5uT)$ using 3-axis helmholtz coil.

  • Estimations of depth, magnetic orientation, and strength of dipole moments aid discrimination between unexploded ordnance (UXO) and non-UXO using magnetic surveys. Such estimations may be hindered by geologic noise, magnetic clutter, and overlapping tails of nearby dipole fields. An improved method of inversion for anomalies of single or multiple dipoles with arbitrary polarization was developed to include intra-inversion filtering and estimation of background field gradients. Data interpolated to grids are flagged so that only nodes nearest to measurement stations are used. To apply intra-inversion filtering to such data requires a gapped filter. Moreover, for data with significant gaps in coverage, or along the edges or corners of survey areas, intra-inversion filters must be appropriately modified. To that end, edge-adaptive and gapped gradient-nulling filters have been designed and tested. Applications are shown for magnetic field data from Chongcho Lake, Sokcho, Korea and the U. S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

  • The satellite in space has a tiny size but is subject to the disturbance torques caused by various sources. The presence of environmental disturbance torques significantly affects the orient as well as the orbital motion of satellite. The sources of environmental effects on LEO Satellite attitude dynamics are various. Four of these, gravity gradient, Earth's magnetic field, solar radiation pressure and aerodynamic are dominant and deterministic. In this study, we describe the model of environmental disturbance torques acting on LEO Satellite and the effects of environmental disturbance torques on LEO Satellite attitude dynamics in detail.

  • Marine magnetic surveys provide a rapid and cost-effective method for pioneer geophysical survey for many purposes. Sea-surface magnetometers offer high accuracy but are limited to measuring the scalar total magnetic field and require dedicated cruise missions. Shipboard three-component magnetometers, on the other hand, can collect vector three components and applicable to any cruise missions. However, correcting for the ship's magnetic field, particularly viscous magnetization, still remains a challenge. This study proposes a new additional correction method for ship's viscous magnetization effect in vector data acquired by shipboard three-component magnetometer. This method utilizes magnetic data collected simultaneously with a sea-surface magnetometer providing total magnetic field measurements. Our method significantly reduces deviations between the two datasets, resulting in corrected vector anomalies with errors as low as 7-25 nT. These tiny errors are possibly caused by the vector magnetic anomaly and its related viscous magnetization. This method is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of shipborne magnetic surveys by providing corrected vector components. This will enhance magnetic interpretations and might be useful for understanding plate tectonics, geological structures, hydrothermal deposits, and more.

  • Using three-components geomagnetic data from a permanent geomagnetic observatory in Icheon, we have computed the power spectrum of each geomagnetic component, amplitude, phase and estimation error of transfer function for each day in the 6 months period July 2002${\sim}$December 2002. The temporal variation of power spectrum have random appearances with repeating relative strong and weak magnitude, which is considered as solar activities. However, there is no clear long-term trend. In the case of amplitude, phase and error of transfer function, even though there are some random patterns over the periods of 1000 s and under 100 s, they seem to be comparatively stable without manifest temporal changes. Futhermore, we have estimated electrical field by assuming P$_{1}\;^{0}$ spherical harmonics and then calculated the approximated apparent resistivity for each day. As a result, the variations of resistivity depend on the temporal magnitude of spectral power in horizontal magnetic fields rather than hydrological changes in near surface.

  • The polarized direction of MT field was analyzed using the MT dataset measured in the Korean Peninsula. The atmospherics above 1 Hz has a large dispersion of polarized direction, whereas the Schumann resonance near 8 Hz exhibits the predominant direction ranging from $N20^{\circ}W$ to NS. The electromagnetic field variations below 0.1 Hz, induced by magnetic pulsations, show a strongly polarized direction of nearly NS. It results from the regular pulsations since the regular pulsation fields, driven by Alfv.n's wave in the magnetosphere, has a worldwide predominant direction of NS. The MT field strongly polarized along NS direction causes the poorly behaved XY impedance.

  • The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.

  • The KSR-3 magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer (MAG/AIM) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and the search-coil magnetometer (MAG/SIM) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic fluctuations. The position (latitude, longitude, and height) and flight condition (the transformation angle) of the rocket is measured after the data based on these two magnetometers are compared with IGRF The gap in the vector of magnetic field between the position of the launching point and an impact point is taken into account in data reduction. Angular variation of pitch, yaw, and roll can be researched when the data is applied to the coordinate system of the rocket.

  • The system of magnetic exploration with a drone flight was constructed and applied to the iron mine site. The magnetic probe system installed on the drone used a sensor as Bartington's fluxgate type magnetometer, Mag639 and the A/D converter to collect magnetic intensity values on the tablet PC. The drone flight control module is a highly expandable Pixhawk with allowing 15 minutes of flight by loading 3kg. Experiments on the magnetic field interference range were performed to remove the erroneous effect from the drone with applying RTK GPS to obtain the magnetic intensity value at the accurate position. The accurate location information enabled to obtain the gradient measurement of magnetic field by measuring twice at different altitudes. Also, by using the terrain information, we could eliminate the terrain effect by setting the flight path to fly along the terrain. These results are in line with the field experiments using the nuclear proton magnetometer G-858 of Geometrics Co., Ltd, which adds to the reliability of the drone based aeromagnetic survey system we constructed.
