Distorted perception of 3D slant caused by disjunctive-eye-movements (반향 눈 운동에 의한 3차원 경사의 왜곡된 지각)

  • Despite dynamical retinal image changes caused by pursuit eye movements, we usually perceive the stable spatial properties of the environment suite successfully Helmholtz and his followers have suggested that the visual system coordinates the retinal and extraretinal eye position information to represent the spatial properties of the environment. However. there have been a significant amount of researches showing that this kind of mechanism may not operate perfectly, and the pursuit eye movement employed in those researches were limited to conjugate eye movements. When an observer tracks an object moving away from the observer with his/her eyes. the two eyes rotate in opposite direction. and this kind of disjunctive eye movement may produce undesirable binocular disparities for the objects in the background. The present study examined whether the visual system compensated for the undesirable binocular disparities caused by disjunctive eye movements with extraretinal eye position information. Although the target object was presented frontoparellely to the subjects. the subjects reported that the object was slanted toward (or alway from) them in consistent with the undesirable binocular disparities produced by the disjunctive eye movements. These results imply that the visual system may not perfectly compensate for the undesirable binocular disparities with extraretinal eye position information.

  • Recently, the infrastructure of stereoscopy is growing fast. Though, the stereoscopy producing capacity is insufficient to meet the demand of the market. Because, at the moment most people who produce the stereoscopy are skilled for the two-dimensional images. So the characteristics of the human stereopsis and stereoscopic cameras are not well considered, it occurs many problems to the viewer. According to this, we studied about the optical axis distance adjustment of stereoscopic camera considering size perception in human stereopsis. First, we measured the area of the object in the image which depends on the optical axis distance. Second, based on the output of first experiment, we conducted a survey and figured out that if we keep the optical axis distance between 3.9cm to 130cm, it wouldn't occur any size perception and will be possible to produce high quality stereoscopy.

The effects of dart performance on target size perception: A test of action-specific perception (다트수행이 표적의 크기지각에 미치는 영향: 행동-특정 지각의 검증)

  • Human perception is an outcome of the influence of various factors rather than objective reflection of external environment. Among the factors, action-specific perception is a phenomenon where perception changes in terms of one's ability to act on the environment. Previous research reported contradictory results regarding whether action-specific perception occurs during performance or after performance due to memory distortion or knowledge about performance results. In this research, we conducted three experiments to determine when action-specific perception occurs. Participants threw darts at different distances and reported perceived size of targets in each trial. The results showed that, in Experiments 1 and 2, participants perceived targets larger when they hit than missed the targets, and the effect was greater when the targets were not visible after each throw. However, because participants had knowledge about the results of their throws, there could have been bias in participants' responses. In Experiment 3, where this possibility was excluded, we also obtained action-specific perception, and therefore concluded that action-specific perception occurs during but not after task performance.

Stereoscopic 3-D shape constancy (입체시에 근거한 3차원 모양 항상성의 검증)

  • Systematic distortions in perceived 3-D shape were obtained for elliptical and parabolic stereoscopic surfaces viewed at different distances under full and reduced cue conditions. In both conditions of Experiments 1 and 3, elliptical hemi-cylinders a appeared near veridical at the 45 cm viewing distances and flattened up to 74% of veridical at 135 cm. In Experiment 2, under full cue conditions, parabolic hemi-cylinders a appeared stretched to 118% of veridical at 45 cm, near veridical at 90 cm, and flattened to 85% of veridical at 135 cm. Under reduced cue conditions parabolas appeared flatter overall: veridical curvature was obtained at 45 cm viewing distance with flatness increasing to 68% of veridical at 135 cm. Results support a scaling explanation of perceived 3-D shape from disparity and rule out the alternative hypothesis that disparity curvature, an optical invariant, provides information for the direct perception of 3-D s shape.

  • 시각 자극의 운동 방향을 파악하는 것은 시각의 주요 기능 가운데 하나이다. 동일한 망막상의 영상 운동은 다양한 조합의 시각 자극의 운동 벡터와 눈 운동의 벡터의 합으로 발생할 수 있는데, 이렇게 망막 정보가 애매한 경우에도 불구하고 시각 자극의 움직임을 정확하게 파악하며, 이것은 시지각의 안정성을 돕는 망막 이외의 정보가 통합된 결과이다. 본 발표는 이러한 정보 중에 하나인 도약 안구 운동에 즈음하여 제시되는 시자극 운동의 지각 과정에서 안구 운동 정보의 역할을 결정한 실험의 결과에 관한 것이다. 도약 안구 운동의 발생 전후에 제시된 자극의 속성에 대한 판단은, 자극의 속성과 도약 안구 운동 방향에 따라 일정한 방식으로 조절되는 것을 관찰하였다. 이러한 시각 운동의 지각 왜곡을 일으키는 신경 기전은 일차 시각 피질에서 일어날 가능성이 있는 것으로 생각된다.

Screen Disparity and Size Perception Function of Various 3D Stimuli (양안시차에 따른 다양한 3D 자극의 크기지각 예측함수 개발)

  • Although there has been much advance in the development of 3D displays of various purpose, 3D contents are not yet so used as expected in those displays. One well-known obstacle in the enjoyment of 3D contents is visual fatigue, but another major issue is image distortion of 3D contents. In the previous research, Shin, Li, & Kim (2012) reported systematic linear relationship between screen disparity and size perception of a simple object whose retinal size was constant across different disparities. In this research, we intended to generalize the previous finding by using various 3D stimuli in the test of the relationship between screen disparity and size perception of those stimuli. Consistent with previous findings, our data indicated that size perception linearly changes as a function of screen disparity and the linearity was observed in all stimuli types we used in this research. We described the empirical relationship between screen disparity and size perception in the form of prediction function for size perception in which visual angle is the predictor. This function will be very useful in the creation of 3D contents as one can make reasonable predictions on the to-be-perceived size of an object being filmed using screen disparity of their camera setting.

The effects of perfectionism and self-control on perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors (완벽주의 성향, 자기조절 능력이 지각된 신체왜곡 및 다이어트행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Appearance management is a serious issue for adults and young people in Korean society. People of various ages have used diverse means to improve their appearances. This study focused on dieting as an appearance management behavior in female adolescents. Dieting behaviors are not just a means to improve appearance; they may also relate to individuals' beliefs and self-control. The importance of individual psychological/personality factors cannot, therefore, be ruled out. Such factors can help explain personality factors explain "what causes a compulsive diet and what factors can alleviate it". This study reviewed the literature on perfectionism and self-control as individual personality factors, and empirically examined the effects of these variables on perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. We performed a structural equation model analysis to verify our hypothesis. The results are as follows: we found perfectionism to be positively related to perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors; we also found self-control to be negatively related to perceived body distortion though unrelated to dieting behaviors; finally, our analysis identified a relationship between perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. These results indicate that perfectionism and self-control should be considered when conducting guidance and counseling sessions on issues related to dieting behaviors for adolescent' appearance management. This paper concludes by discussing the study's implications and limitations.

A Study on the Analysis of Crust Deformation on the Korean Peninsula after the Tohoku Earthquake using GNSS Observation (GNSS를 이용한 동일본대지진 이후 한반도 지각변동 해석 연구)

  • It is known through prior research that the crust of the Korean Peninsula moves southeast at an annual average of 3 cm/year. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused a great change in the crust of the Korean Peninsula. Since then, the frequency of earthquakes has increased on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, by using NGII and IGS GNSS observation data of the recent 15 years, to analyze the trends of changes in the deformation of the Korean Peninsula before and after the outbreak of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Data processing utilized Bernese Software V5.2, a widely used scientific and technical software around the world. As a result, the global movement of the Korean peninsula differed by about 4mm and the direction of movement by about 10° compared to before the Great East Japan Earthquake. As for the internal distortion of the Korean Peninsula, the East-West expansion of the Korean peninsula's crust was observed during the Great East Japan Earthquake, but it is believed that it has not fully returned to the level before the Great East Japan Earthquake.

An Investigation into the Determination Model of User Satisfaction: A Cognitive Approach based on the Disconfirmation Theory (정보시스템의 사용자만족 결정과정을 규명하는 인지적 모형에 관한 연구)

  • 사용자 만족(User satisfaction)은 Bailey와 Pearson(1983) 이후, 정보시스템 분야의 연구에서 시스템의 성능(Performance)을 대변하는 성과변수로서 가장 널리 사용되어져 왔다.[Delone & McLean, 1992]. 그러나 사용자 만족은 실제 시스템의 객관적인 성능이나 품질이 아닌 사용자에 의해 지각된(Perceived) 만족이므로, 인간이 인지과정에서 받는 다른 영향들로 인하여 지각된 성과는 실제의 시스템 성능과 다를 수 있다.[Gatian 1994; Szajna & Scamell, 1993. 따라서 만일 사용자가 지각한 성능이 객관적인 실제의 시스템 성능과 반드시 일치하지 않는다면, 그 원인은 무엇이며, 사용자가 시스템을 평가하는 과정에서 어떤 요인들이 작용하여 이러한 왜곡된 결과를 가져오는지, 사용자 만족이 결정되는 인지적 과정을 규명할 필요가 있다. 이러한 의미에서 본 연구는 마케팅 분야에서 일반상품에 대한 소비자의 만족 결정에 영향을 주는 변수와 그 결정과정을 연구한 소비자 만족/불만족(Consumer Satisfaction / Dissatisfaction)의 연구이론을 도입하여, 정보시스템이란 상품을 대상으로 사용자가 만족을 느끼게 되는 과정을 인지적(Cognitive) 관점에서 규명하고, 만족결정에 영향을 미치는 변수들을 찾아낸 후 소비자 만족을 결정하는 모형을 연구하고자 하였다. 8개 기업의 정보시스템 사용자부터 데이터를 수집하여 LISREL을 이용하여 사용자 만족 연구 모형을 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 결정모형은 유의하였으며 정보시스템의 사용자 만족에 영향을 미치는 변수로는 시스템의 성능 뿐 아니라 기대불일치가 함께 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 시스템 성능의 향상과 함께 사용자들의 기대수준 관리에 관심을 기울일 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Piano Sound Compression Algorithm Using Auditory Characteristics (청각 특성을 이용한 피아노 음원 압축 알고리듬)

  • 디지틀 피아노에서 PCM 방식의 음원 합성을 위한 압축 알고리듬을 제안하였다. 디지틀 피아노는 매우 높은 음질을 필요로 한다. 따라서 FM 방식보다는 PCM 방식의 음원 합성 알고리듬이 주로 사용되어져 왔다. 그러나 PCM 방식은 많은 메모리가 필요한 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 피아노 음원을 청각적으로 왜곡이 없도록 압축, 저장하여 음원 데이터를 줄였다. 또한 피아노 음의 시간 영역 특성에 따라 비트 할당을 달리하여 음질을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 이와 같이 부호화할 경우 약 15 : 1 ~ 20 :1로 원음을 압축하여도 지각적으로 원음과 동일한 복원음을 얻을 수 있었다.
