A Study on the Evaluation of 3D Dose Distribution using Normoxic Polymer Gel (정상산소 중합체 겔 선량계를 이용한 3차원 방사선량 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: As increasing complexity of modern radiotherapy technique, more developing dosimetry is required. Polymer gel dosimeters offer a wide range of potential applications with high resolution and assured quality in the thee-dimensional verification of complex dose distribution such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). The purpose of this study is to find the most sensitive and suitable gel as a dosimeter by varying its composition ratio and its condition such as temperature during manufacturing. Materials and Methods: Each polymer gel with various ratio of composition was irradiated with the same amount of photon beam accordingly. Various polymer gels were analyzed and compared using a dedicated software written in visual C++ which converts TE images to R2 map images. Their sensitivities to the photon beam depending on their composition ratio were investigated. Results: There is no dependence on beam energy nor dose rate, and calibration curve is linear. Conclusion: The polymer gel dosimeter developed by using anti-oxidant in this study proved to be suitable for dosimetry.

Three-Dimensional Dosimetry Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Polymer Gel (중합체 겔과 자기공명영상을 이용한 3차원 선량분포 측정)

  • Purpose : Three-dimensional radiation dosimetry using magnetic resonance imaging of polymer gel was recently introduced. This dosimetry system is based on radiation induced chain polymerization of acrylic monomers in a muscle equivalent gel and provide accurate 3 dimensional dose distribution. We planned this study to evaluate the clinical value of this 3-dimensional dosimetry. Materials and Methods: The polymer gel poured into a cylindrical glass flask and a spherical glass flask. The cylindrical test tubes were for dose response evaluation and the spherical flasks, which is comparable to the human head, were for isodose curves. T2 maps from MR images were calculated using software, IDL. Dose distributions have been displayed for dosimetry. The same spherical flask of gel and the same irradiation technique was used for film and TLD dosimetry and compared with each other. Results : The R2 of the gel respond linearly with radiation doses in the range of 2 to 15 Gy. The repeated dosimetry of spherical gel showed the same isodose curves. These isodose curves were identical to dose distributions from treatment planning system especially high dose range. In addition, the gel dosimetry system showed comparable or superior results with the film and TLD dosimetry. Conclusion : The 3-dimensional dosimetry for conformal radiation therapy using MRI of polymer gal showed stable and accurate results. Although more studies are needed for convenient clinical application, it appears to be a useful tool for conformal radiation therapy.

Characteristics of CCD Based Optical CT Scanner for Therapeutic Radiation Dosimetry (치료방사선량평가를 위한 CCD 기반 광학컴퓨터단층촬영 스캐너의 특성)

  • A CCD camera and an LED light source were combined to fabricate a compact optical CT scanner for the therapeutic radiation dose evaluation of a polymer gel dosimeter. After the collimated beam emitted by the LED passed through aquarium, gel phantom, and telecentric lens, an image was collected by the CCD camera and reconstructed using MATLAB. By using a stepping motor and LabVIEW, the gel dosimeter was rotated at every $0.72^{\circ}$, and the time for collecting 500 slice images per a revolution was within 20 min. At a spatial frequency of 4.5 lp/mm of the optical CT scanner, the modulation transfer function value was 72%. The linear correlation coefficient of the optical CT scanner for the polymer gel dosimeter was 0.987.

Gelation Behavior of Acrylonitrile Copolymer/Dimethylformamide Solution and Mechanical Properties of Films Obtained from It′s Solution (아크릴로니트릴공중합체-디메틸포름아마이드 용액의 겔화 거동 및 겔필름의 물성)

  • The acrylonitrile copolymer/dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions were prepared to investigate the gelation behavior and critical gel concentration (c*). Gelation is rapidly progressed with the increase of molecular weight of copolymer, but significantly delayed with supercooling temperature and comonomer contents. The c* behavior showed contrary trend against gelation behavior. In dynamic viscoelastic test, two glass-transition region were observed in film obtained from gelled solution whereas one glass-transition in film obtained from true solution. This result supports the idea that an ordered junction zone is formed by the dipole-dipole interaction of intermolecularly neighboring stereo-regular parts of atactic acrylonitrile copolymer chains due to a nucleation process in the solution.

Comparison of Polymer and BANGTM Gel Dosimeters to Use a Optical Computed Tomography Scanner (광학 전산화단층촬영 스캐너 사용을 위한 중합체 겔과 BANGTM 겔 선량계의 특성 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the basic radiological characteristics of in-house polymer gel and commercially-available gel (BANGTM) gel dosimeters with a spectro-photometer to use a optical computed tomography (CT) scanner. We investigated the radiological characteristics including dose linearity, absorbance spectrum, dose rate dependency and inter-and intra-reproducibility at wavelengths of 590, 600 and 630 nm. The optimal dose linearities of two gel dosimeters showed R2 value of 0.939 and 0.948 at wavelengths of 590 nm and 600 nm, respectively. For two polymer gel dosimeters, there is no peak sensitivity within the range of all wavelengths in absorbance spectrum. For in-house gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency were within 5% for all wavelengths except for the dose rate of 100 MU/min. For BANGTM gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency showed an error range of ±5% for all wavelengths. The inter-and intra-reproducibility of two gel dosimeters were within the range of 2.5%. We have confirmed that the two gel dosimeters was appropriate for use with a optical CT scanner.

A Study on Elution Behavior of Polystyrene Copolymers in Gel Permeation Chromatography (겔 투과 크로마토그래피에서 폴리스티렌 혼성중합체들의 용리거동에 관한 연구)

  • The elution behavior of polystyrenes(PS), polymethylmethacrylates (PMMA), polybutadienes(PB), PS-PMMA(SM) block copolymers and PS-PB star shaped copolymers on the cross-linked polystyrene gels was studied. An interpretation was proposed for the plots of log hydrodynamic volume versus retention volume of solutes in the mobile phases such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene, chloroform, methylene chloride and tetrahydrofuran-cyclohexane mixture. In order to predict the retention of solutes from their physical properties, multiple stepwise regression analysis was applied to obtain the correlation. The distribution coefficients($K_p$) of solute-gel interactions in GPC for homopolymers and PS copolymers were also obtained in terms of network-limited separation mechanism. In the cases of PS and PB, $K_p$ values approach unity, while $K_p$ values for PMMA decrease as MW increase in the good solvent, but in poor solvent, $K_p$ values increase as MW increase. $K_p$ values of PS copolymers are dependent on their MW and composition, therefore, morohology of SM block copolymer is predicted to be random phase.   • In this study, the structural and rheological characterizations of polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) solutions for PAN fiber were investigated according to the change of storage times and temperatures. As a result, PAN/DMSO solutions exhibited a very characteristic rheological behavior with variation of temperature. The solutions showed an increase of complex viscosity and a decrease of loss tangent($tan{\delta}$) as temperature was increased over the temperature range of 40 and $70^{\circ}C$ and it could be seen that the viscosity rapidly increased at low frequency. These results indicated that the gel polymer and denser gel structure were formed due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of water in the polymer solution depending on the storage time.

  • ${\beta}-Cyclodextrin\;({\beta}-CD)$ polymers were prepared using epichlorohydrin as a cross linking agent. The polymers were separated into ${\beta}-CD$ soluble polymer $({\beta}-CD\;SP)$ and ${\beta}-CD$ insoluble polymer $({\beta}-CD\;ISP)$ on a 10,000 molecular weight cut-off membrane (YM 10). Optimum separation conditions in the YM 10 were: transmembrane pressure 51.7 kPa, separation temperature $35^{\circ}C$, and volume concentration ratio 10. The flux was $0.025\;mL/cm^{2}/min$ under the optimum conditions. Gel permeation chromatography indicated that ${\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$ had a degree of polymerization of $2{\sim}8$ and over 10, respectively. The formation of an inclusion complex with hydrophobic compounds such as 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene, methyl red, and naringin was compared among ${\beta}-CD,\;{\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$. The molar absorptivity for the two chromatic compounds was increased and the absorption peak was shifted in the presence of ${\beta}-CD$ polymers. Naringin, the principal flavonoid bitter tasting component of citrus fruit, had a low water solubility. The solubility of naringin was increased through the formation of an inclusion complex with ${\beta}-CD$ polymers. There was no significant difference in the formation of an inclusion complex between ${\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$. Reduction of the bitter components from citrus products was shown to be possible when employing ${\beta}-CD\;SP$, while the usage of ${\beta}-CD$ monomer has been limited due to the low water solubility.

3-Dimensional Dosimetry of Small Field Photon Beam (광자선의 소조사면에서의 3차원적 선량 측정)

  • A polymer gel dosimeter was fabricated. A 3-dimensional dosimetry experiment was performed in the small field of the photon of the cyberknife. The dosimeter was installed in a head and neck phantom. It was manufactured from the acrylic and it was used in dosimetry. By using the head and neck CT protocol of the CyberKnife system, CT images of the head and neck phantom were obtained and delivered to the treatment planning system. The irradiation to the dosimeter in the treatment planning was performed, and then, the image was obtained by using 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after 24 hours. The dose distribution of the phantom was analyzed by using MATLAB. The results of this measurement were compared to the results of calculation in the treatment planning. In the isodose curve on the axial direction, the dose distribution coincided with the high dose area, 0.76mm difference on 80%, rather than the low dose area, 1.29 mm difference on 40%. In this research, the fact that the polymer gel dosimeter and MRI can be applied for analyzing a small field in a 3 dimensional dosimetry was confirmed. Moreover, the feasibility of using these for the therapeutic radiation quality control was also confirmed.

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted poly γ-benzyl L-glutamate (PBLG) were prepared from esterification or substitution reaction of PBLG with PEG having hydroxyl group at one end or primary amino groups at both ends. The viscosity of these polymer solution was decreased with decrease of polymer concentration. But in more dilute solution the viscosity was increased with decrease of polymer concentration. PEG-grafted PBLG polymers showed smaller water contact angles than PBLG homopolymer, and the water contact angles of the surface of PEG-grafted PBLG polymers were largely dropped by reacting with aminoethanol, resulting in hydrogel surfaces.
