  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of distance of light tip to resin surfaces and exposure time on the polymerization of surface and 2 mm subsurface of composite resins cured with two light sources; conventional halogen light (XL 3000, 3M, U.S.A.) and plasma arc light (Flipo, LOKKI, France) and compare the uniformity of polymerization from the center to the periphery of resin surfaces according to polymerization diameter cure with two light sources. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Difference of relative light intensity decrease in plasma arc light smaller than that of conventional halogen light(p<0.05). 2. In all groups, microhardness of top surfaces was decreased when distance of the light tip to resin surfaces is more than 2mm and increased according to increase of exposure time(p<0.05). 3. Difference of microhardness of the 2mm subsurface was rapidly decreased when distance of light tip to resin surfaces is more than 4mm(except, plasma arc light exposure time of 3 seconds). and the distance of light tip to resin surfaces and exposure time more affected 2mm subsurface rather than top surface(p<0.05). 4. Although exposure time was increased, difference of microhardness of the 2mm subsurface with the distance of light tip to resin surfaces was relatively high in groups between below 4mm and 6 mm(p<0.05). 5. Plasma arc light exposure time of 6 to 9 seconds produced microhardness values and microhardness change according to various distance similar to those produced with 40 to 80 second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 6. In all groups, microhardness was decreased gradually from the center to the periphery of resin surfaces(p<0.05).

  • The polymerization shrinkage behavior of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was measured using digital image correlation method. The stress distribution on the surface of specimen was calculated by finite element analysis with equivalent elastic modulus and was compared with the measured shrinkage distribution. Camera images were monitored by a CCD camera during and after the irradiation of light. As a result of the DIC analysis, a non-uniform shrinkage distribution was observed in both composite resins, and the resin core inside the ring specimen had free flowability, leading to in greater shrinkage strain than the resin/ring interfacial region. It was observed that as the distance from the center of the resin increased, the radial average shrinkage strain decreased. The radial average shrinkage strain during light irradiation occurred to be 33% for P90 and 57% for AP-X of the entire strain at the end of the test. The shrinkage behavior of P90 and AP-X was measured to be significantly different from each other during light irradiation. In the resin near the resin/ring interface, it was confirmed that the tensile strain rapidly formed to increase after light irradiation, causing a tensile stressed, interface weak.

  • Polymerization shrinkage stress analysis of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was performed using strain-gage measurement and FEM analysis. A theoretical equation based on Young's modulus and polymerization shrinkage of the composite resin was proposed to predict the polymerization shrinkage stress. Experimental results showed that the maximum shrinkage stress of Clearfil AP-X was about 2.8 times higher than Filtek P90. FEM analysis agreed with such experimental stress behaviours and showed that the maximum Von-Mises stress appeared near the margin of the filled resin adhered with PMMA ring. The stress concentration at the interface on the specimen surface was higher than that in the interior. The maximum error of shrinkage stress by the theoretical equation was reasonable within 5% in comparison to FEM results under plane stress.

  • The cationic polymerization of oxolane high explosives which have pendant explosive groups such as azido, nitrato and hydrazino is investigated theoretically using the semiempirical MINDO/3, MNDO and AM1 methods. The nucleophilicity and basicity of oxolane high explosives can be explained by the negative charge on oxygen atom of oxolane. The reactivity of propagation in the polymerization of oxolane can be represented by the positive charge on carbon atom and the low LUMO energy of active species of oxolane. The reaction of the oxolane high explosives in oxonium ion form to the open chain carbenium ion form is expected by computational stability energy (17.950~30.197 kcal/mol) of the oxonium ion and carbenium ion favoring the carbenium ion. The relative equilibrium concentration of cyclic oxonium ion and carbenium ion is found to be a major determinant of mechanism, owing to the rapid equilibrium of these catoinic forms. Based on calculation, in the prepolymer propagation step, $S_N1$ mechanism will be at least as fast as that for $S_N2$ mechanism.

  • Monomers of oxetane high explosives were theoretically examined in terms of reactivity, reaction mechanism and process of polymerization substituted by azido $(-CH_2N_3)$, nitrato $(-CH_2ONO_2)$ and hydrazino $(-CH_2N_2H_3)$ which belong to the 5th class hazardous materials and have explosiveness under acid catalyst using MINDO/3, MNDO, and AMI methods for formal charge, heat of formation, and energy level. Nucleophilicity and base of oxetane high explosives could be explained by negative charge size of oxetane oxygen atom and reactivity of oxetane in the growth stage of polymerization under acid catalyzer could be expected to be governed by positive charge size of axial carbon atom and low LUMO energy of electrophile. It could be estimated that carbenium ion was more beneficial in the conversion process of oxetane high explosives than that of stabilization energy (13.90~31.02 kcal/mole) of oxonium ion. In addition, concentration of oxonium ion and carbenium ion in equilibrium state influenced mechanism and it was also estimated that $S_N1$ mechanism reacts faster than that of $S_N2$ in prepolymer growth stage considering quick equilibrium based on form and calculation of polymerization under acid catalyzer.

  • To estimate the shear-velocity ($v_s$) structure beneath the WIZ station on White Island in New Zealand, we applied receiver function (RF) inversion and H-${\kappa}$ stacking methods to 362 teleseismic events (Mw > 5.5) recorded during April 20, 2007 to September 6, 2013. Using 71 RFs with errors less than 20% after 200 iterative computations, we determined that the depth to Moho of $v_s$ = 4.35 km/s is $24{\pm}1km$ within a 15 km radius of the station. In an 1-d $v_s$ model derived by RF inversions, a 4-km thick low-velocity layer (LVL) at depths of 18 ~ 22 km was identified in the lower crust. This LVL, which is 0.15 km/s slower than the rocks above and below it, may indicate the presence of a deep magma reservoir. The H-${\kappa}$ stacking method yielded an estimate of the depth to the Moho of 24.5 km, which agrees well with the depth determined by RF inversions. The low $v_p/v_s$ ratio of 1.64 may be due to the presence of gas-filled rock or hot crystallizing magma.

  • This study selected the worst-case scenario for fireball and vapor cloud explosion (VCE) of a styrene monomer storage tank installed in a petrochemical production plant and performed damage prediction and accident impact analysis. The range of influence of radiant heat and overpressure due to fireball and vapor VCE during the abnormal polymerization reaction of styrene monomer, the main component of the mixed residue oil storage tank, was quantitatively analyzed by applying the e-CA accident damage prediction program. The damage impact areas of radiant heat and explosion overpressure are analyzed to have a maximum radius of 1,150m and 626m, respectively. People within 1,150m of radiant heat of 4kW/m2 may have their skin swell when exposed to it for 20 seconds. In buildings within 626m, where an explosion overpressure of 21kPa is applied, steel structures may be damaged and separated from the foundation, and people may suffer physical injuries. In the event of a fire, explosion or leak, determine the risk standards such as the degree of risk and acceptability to workers in the work place, nearby residents, or surrounding facilities due to radiant heat or overpressure, identify the hazards and risks of the materials handled, and establish an emergency response system. It is expected that it will be helpful in establishing measures to minimize damage to workplaces through improvement and investment activities.

  • Horizontal-axes on the seismic section have been represented in a distance unit by applying horizontal-distance correction transformation on a 2-D seismic section of single channel marine seismic data. By drawing horizontal-axes in a distance unit, distortion of horizontal distances shown on the seismic section when the ship speed varies during a survey can be diminished considerably. Position information obtained by GPS and stored in each trace of seismic data as well as data collection windows were used for horizontal distance correction. The minimum window length was decided by considering ship speed and shot interval, and the maximum window length wat determined by reflecting radius of the 1st Fresnel zone. In choosing an optimum window length, horizontal resolution and stacking effect were considered simultaneously. By applying horizontal distance correction we could get a 2-D seismic section which is considered at reflecting the real subsurface structure analogously.
