A review about the application of response surface methodology in the optimization of food technology is presented. The theoretical principles of response surface methodology and steps for its application are described. The response surface methodologies : three-level full factorial, central composite, Box-Behnken, and Doehlert designs are compared in terms of characteristics and efficiency. Furthermore, recent references of their uses in food technology are presented. A comparison between the response surface designs (three-level full factorial, central composite, Box-Behnken and Doehlert design) has demonstrated that the Box-Behnken and Doehlert designs are slightly more efficient than the central composite design but much more efficient than the three-level full factorial designs.

In this paper, the effect of various regression models is investigated on structural optimization using the central composite method. Three bar truss and the upper platform of a satellite are optimized using various regression models that are polynomial, exponential and log functions. Response surface method is non-gradient, semi-global, discrete and fast converging in optimization problem. Sampling points are extracted by the design of experiments using the central composite method. Response surface is generated using the various regression functions. Structural analysis for calculating constraints is executed to find static and dynamic responses. From this study, it is verified that the response surface method has advantage in optimum value and computation time in comparison to other optimization methods.

In this study, an approximate multi-objective optimization of a wall-mounted monitor bracket arm was performed. The rotation angle of the bracket arm was determined considering the inplane degree of freedom. We then formulated an optimization problem on maximum stress and deflection. Analyses of mean and design parameters were conducted for sensitivity regarding performance with orthogonal array and response surface method (RSM). RSM models of objective and constraint functions were generated using central composite (CCD) and D-optimal design. The accuracy of approximate models was evaluated through $R^2$ value. The obtained optimal solutions by non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) were validated through the finite element analysis and we compared the obtained optimal solution by CCD and D-optimal design.
A sequential design of experiments was employed to optimize MOF-235 synthesis for acetylene adsorption process. Two experimental designs were applied: a two-level factorial design for screening and a central composite design, one of response surface methodologies (RSM). In this study, 23 factorial design of experiment was used to evaluate the effect of parameters of synthesis temperature and time, and also mixing speed on crystallinity of MOF-235. Experiments were conducted 16 times follwing MINITAB 19 design software for MOF-235 synthesis. Half-normal, pareto, residual, main and interaction effects were drawn based on the XRD results. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of test results depicts that the synthesis temperature and time have significant effects on the crystallinity of MOF-235 (response variable). After screening, a central composite design was performed to optimize the acetylene adsorption capacity of MOF-235 based on synthesis conditions. From nine runs designed by MINITAB 19, the result was calculated using the second order model equation. It was estimated that the maximum adsorption capacity (18.7 mmol/g) was observed for MOF-235 synthesized at optimum conditions of 86.3 ℃ and 28.7 h.
A sequential design of experiments was used to optimize MOF-801 synthesis process. For the initial screening, a general 2k factorial design was selected followed by the central composition design, one of the response surface methods. A 23 factorial design based on the molar ratio of fumaric acid, dimethylformamide (DMF), and formic acid was performed to select the more suitable response variable for the design of experimental method among the crystallinity and BET specific surface area of MOF-801. After performing 8 synthesis experiments designed by MINITAB 19 software, the characteristic analysis was performed using XRD analysis and nitrogen adsorption method. The crystallinity with R2 = 0.999 was found to be more suitable for the experimental method than that of BET specific surface area. Based on analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was confirmed that the molar ratio of fumaric acid and formic acid was a major factor in determining the crystallinity of MOF-801. Through the response optimization and contour plot of two factors, the optimal molar ratio of ZrOCl2·8H2O : fumaric acid : DMF : formic acid was 1 : 1 : 39 : 35. In order to optimize the synthesis process, the central composition design on synthesis time and temperature was performed under the identical molar ratio of precursors. The results derived through the designed 9 synthesis experiments were calculated using the quadratic model equation. Thus, the maximum crystallinity of MOF-801 predicted under the synthesis time and temperature of 7.8 h and 123 ℃, respectively.

The calibration of microscopic traffic simulation models has received much attention in the simulation field. Although no standard has been established for it, a genetic algorithm (GA) has been widely employed in recent literature because of its high efficiency to find solutions in such optimization problems. However, the performance still falls short in simulation analyses to support fast decision making. This paper proposes a new calibration procedure using a dual GA and central composite design (CCD) in order to improve the efficiency. The calibration exercise goes through three major sequential steps: (1) experimental design using CCD for a quadratic response surface model (RSM) estimation, (2) 1st GA procedure using the RSM with CCD to find a near-optimal initial population for a next step, and (3) 2nd GA procedure to find a final solution. The proposed method was applied in calibrating the Gipps car-following model with respect to maximizing the likelihood of a spacing distribution between a lead and following vehicle. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a conventional calibration approach using a single GA was compared under both simulated and real vehicle trajectory data. It was found that the proposed approach enhances the optimization speed by starting to search from an initial population that is closer to the optimum than that of the other approach. This result implies the proposed approach has benefits for a large-scale traffic network simulation analysis. This method can be extended to other optimization tasks using GA in transportation studies.

Box-Wilson experimental design method, known as central composite design, is the design of any information-gathering exercises where variation is present. This method was devised to gather as much data as possible in spite of the low design cost. This method was employed to model the effect of mixing factors on several performances of 60 MPa high strength self compacting concrete and to numerically calculate the optimal mix proportion. The nonlinear relations between factors and responses of HSSCC were approximated in the form of second order polynomial equation. In order to characterize five performances like compressive strength, passing ability, segregation resistance, manufacturing cost and density depending on five factors like water-binder ratio, cement content, fine aggregate percentage, fly ash content and superplasticizer content, the experiments were made at the total 52 experimental points composed of 32 factorial points, 10 axial points and 10 center points. The study results showed that Box-Wilson experimental design was really effective in designing the experiments and analyzing the relation between factor and response.
In this study, the optimization process was carried out by using the central composite model of the response surface methodology in waste cooking oil based biodiesel production process. The acid value, reaction time, reaction temperature, methanol/oil molar ratio, and catalyst amount were selected process variables. The response was evaluated by measuring the FAME content (more than 96.5%) and kinematic viscosity (1.9~5.5 cSt). Through basic experiments, the range of optimum operation variables for the central composite model, such as reaction time, reaction temperature and methanol/oil molar ratio, were set as between 45 and 60 min, between 50 and $60^{\circ}C$, and between 8 and 12, respectively. The optimum operation variables, such as biodiesel production reaction time, temperature, and methanol/oil molar ratio deduced from the central composite model were 55.2 min, $57.5^{\circ}C$, and 10, respectively. With those conditions the results deduced from modeling were as followings: the predicted FAME content of the biodiesel and the kinematic viscosity of 97.5% and 2.40 cSt, respectively. We obtained experimental results with deduced operating variables mentioned above as followings: the FAME content and kinematic viscosity of 97.7% and 2.41 cSt, respectively. Error rates for the FAME content and kinematic viscosity were 0.23 and 0.29%, respectively. Therefore, the low error rate could be obtained when the central composite model among surface reaction methods was applied to the optimized production process of waste cooking oil raw material biodiesel.

To meet demand of big capacity and high speed rotation for washing machine, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Shaft and flange connected by inserting shaft serration into flange on the process of die casting. When the system is operating, the gap is formed between serration and flange. But, Serration has various design factors and the optimal values can't be easily determined. Using a design of experiment (DOE) based on the FEM (Finite Element Method), this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between the various design factors as well as the main effect of the each design factor under bending, twist and vibration and proposed optimum design using box-behnken method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.
