  • A chrome absorbent that is useful in rapid magnetic recovery and recycling was developed though a synthesis of Multi-Terminalized Magnetic-core Dendrimer (MTMD). Divergence through coprecipitation and rotation growth was used for synthesis. The dendrimer was multi-terminilized through methyl propionate and glutaric acid. The property analysis of the synthesized sample was performed through XRD, FT-IR, TEM, EDS, TGA and zeta potential analyzer. A magnetic-core of MTMD had a magnetite crystal and the size of 4th generation dendrimer was identified to be from 15 nm to 20 nm. Through the analysis of the TGA, the rate of the dendrimer branch for the first generation dendrimer was about 7% and 3% of diminished weight occurred as the generation grows. Also, the potential of the dendrimer when multi-terminalized, had variation from 25.26 mV to -6.53 mV. As a result of MTMD adsorption experiment, it absorbed more than 80% within 5 minutes and indicated absorptivity of 6.308 mg/g. When it was compared with COOH Dendrimer (COOH-D) after magnetic recovery, the recovery time was rapidly reduced by more than half and it could recover 100% within 30 minutes. In case of the regeneration experiment that used chrome, it was identified to maintain the same adsorptivity for four runs.

  • This study investigated the mineralogical characteristics of lime mortars used in pointing of Namhansanseon Yeojang from Joseon dynasty. Polarization microscopy revealed quartz, feldspar, mica, pyroxene and opaque minerals in the lime mortars. XRD analysis also confirmed clay minerals chlorite and kaolin. As a result of particle size analysis of lime mortars, the particle size distribution was wide and size was not uniform. 60% of samples were corresponded to the sand area. The chemical components detected from XRF analysis, 8.71-11.18 % of Ca as the main component of lime and $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Fe_2O_3$ in soil minerals were main components. The lime mortars showed an endothermic peak due to decarbonization reaction of $CaCO_3$ at $750^{\circ}C$ and weight reduction rate of 10%. The microstructures were agglomerated amorphous and observed rhombohedral calcite crystals by scanning electron microscope. It is considered that the pointing of Yeojang is a mortar mixed with lime and soil. In addition the Hanbongseong Yeojang was constructed using the same materials and construction technique because the minerals composition is not different according to the Yeojang location and use.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of various soft steam treatments, namely, forced convection-boiler, forced convection-fan, and natural convection, on the pretreatment characteristics of potatoes. In this study, potatoes were exposed to various cooking conditions, including steaming method, treatment time (0-60 min), and temperature (60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$). Then, changes in temperature, cook value, ascorbic acid content, moisture content, and weight loss in the fresh and steam-treated samples were measured and evaluated. The results clearly showed that natural convective steaming was superior to other treatments in terms of heating characteristics, cook value (FC-b: $46.4{\pm}1.7$, FC-f: $21.8{\pm}1.1$, NC: $52.1{\pm}1.9min$ at $80^{\circ}C$), ascorbic acid content (FC-b: $36.5{\pm}2.7$, FC-f: $28.5{\pm}2.9$, NC: $48.2%{\pm}2.5%$ at $80^{\circ}C$), moisture retention (FCb: $74.6{\pm}0.8$, FC-f: $71.5{\pm}0.5$, NC: $77.6%{\pm}0.4%$ for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$), and weight loss (FC-b: $13.9{\pm}0.8$, FC-f: $15.6{\pm}0.6$, NC: $10.6%{\pm}0.7%$ for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$) for thermally processed potatoes.

  • In order to utilize effectively sea mustard(Undaria pinnatifida) which is excellent in nutrition and medical action, powdered sea mustard juice was prepared and then its chemical composition and the stability of pigments were examined. Powdered sea mustard was made by washing fresh sea mustard with tap water to remove clay and sand, blanching at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 sec in mixing solution(3% salt+1% $MgCO_3$), hot air drying($50-55^{\circ}C$, 3 hrs) after draining and pulverizing dried sea mustard to 200mesh. And then powdered sea mustard mixtures for juice type beverage was made by adding 0.75% of salt, 1.25% of sugar, 0.2% of ascorbic acid, 0.25% of flour of roasted barley and 0.8% of pulverized sea mustard to 100ml of water. Chemical composition of product was not scarcely changed during processing while amino-nitrogen content was increased and alginic acid and ash contents were decreased. The retention of chlorophyll and total carotenoid pigments of product against fresh sea mustard were 91.6% and 89.5% respectively. Judging from sensory evaluation, color, flavor, taste and dispersibility of powdered sea mustard juice were excellent and undesirable flavor of product was masked by addition of flour of roasted barley.

  • Earthquakes over 5.0 on the Richter scale have recently occurred in Korea, which has led to interest in the seismic safety of structures. If a water storage facility is damaged by an earthquake, the water could leak, and the insufficient water would make fire suppression difficult. Therefore, a water storage facility should satisfy safety requirements for earthquakes. In this study, the seismic performance of a water tank was improved by installing a lead rubber bearing between the foundation and the tank. It designed the lead rubber bearing available to the existed concrete foundation. ANSYS was used for modeling to consider the interaction between the fluid and structure of the tank and the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure using four seismic waves. In the case of hydrostatic pressure at 2.5 water level, full level, the same stress appeared irrespective of whether the seismic isolation was installed. When hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressures are applied at the same time, the seismic-isolated water tank showed less seismic force, and the damping ratio was lower than that of general seismic isolation. This occurred because the weight of the water tank is much smaller than the stiffness of the seismic isolation. The result is expected to be used for further research on seismic capacity evaluation for water tanks.

  • Leaf burning due to nitrofenapplication was characterized as brown color spot appearing on the leaf sheath and blade. The spots predominantly appeared around 5-7 cm high above soil surface regardless of different particle size, formulation, application method, or water level. Magnitude and frequency of burn spots increased somewhat as the granular size gets finer, by higher water level, or in transplanted rice compared to directly sown rice when applied at 7 leaf-stage, but there was no indication of increase in leaf burning due to clinging of floating dust to rice plant. When collections from local distributor's stock of TOK 7G, a granular formulation of nitrofen, were analyzed for particle size composition, 98.9% by weight ranged between 9 to 35 meshes, and only about 0.08% by weight was of particles finer than 100 mesh.

  • In order to determine the optimum digestible energy to protein (DE/P) ratio in diets for Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, $45\%$ and $40\%$ protein diets with graded levels of DE/P ratio were fed to average 36g and 80g fish, respectively. The DE/P ratios in the $45\%$ protein diets ranged from 7.4 to 10.0 kcal/g protein, while those in the $40\%$ protein diets varied between 7.5 and 8.9 kcal/g protein. Both in the $45\%$ and $40\%$ protein diets, the changes in the DE/P ratios did not affect either the daily weight gain or the feed efficiency. However daily protein retention, daily energy retention, nutrient utilization and chemical composition in carcass varied depending on the DE/P ratios. Thus based on these parameters as criteria, the optimum DE/P ratio for both the $40\%$ and $45\%$ protein diets, estimated to be about 8 kcal/g protein. DE/P ratios more than 8 kcal/g protein, led to the deposition of a large amount of body fat, especially in the viscera. Any protein-sparing effect was not observed with the increase of the energy content in the diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients determined by the indirect method, using $Cr_2O_3$ as an indicator, were around $90,\;98\%\;and\;70\%$, for protein, lipid and digestible carbohydrate respectively, without any distinct differences between the diets.

  • A green microalga, Chlorella vulgaris UTX 259, was cultivated in a bench-scale raceway pond. During the culture, 15%(v/v) $CO_2$ was supplied and industrial wastewater discharged from a steel-making plant was used as a culture medium. In a small scale culture bottle, the microalga grew up to 1.8 g $dm^{-3}$ of cell concentration and ammonia was completely removed from the wastewater with an yield coefficient of 25.7 g dry cell weight $g^{-1}\;NH_3-N$. During the bottle-culture, microalga was dominant over heterotrophic microorganisms in the culture medium. Therefore, the amount of carbon dioxide fixation could be estimated from the change of dry cell weight. In a semi-continuous operation of raceway pond with intermittent lighting (12 h light and 12 h dark), increase of dilution rate resulted in increase of the ammonia removal rate as well as the $CO_2$ fixation rate but the ammonia removal efficiency decreased. Ammonia was not completely removed from the medium (wastewater) of raceway pond which was operated in a batch mode under a light intensity up to 20 klux. The incomplete removal of ammonia was believed due to insufficient light supply. A mathematical model, capable of predicting experimental data, was developed in order to simulate the performance of the raceway pond under the light intensity of sun during a bright daytime. Simulation results showed that the rates of $CO_2$ fixation and ammonia removal could be enhanced by increasing light intensity. According to the simulation, 80 mg $dm^{-3}$ of ammonia in the medium could be completely removed if the light intensity was over 60 klux with a continuous lighting. Under the optimal operating condition determined by the simulation, the rates of carbon dioxide fixation and ammonia removal in the outdoor operation of raceway pond were estimated as high as $24.7 g m^{-2} day^{-1}$ and $0.52 g NH_3-N m^{-2} day^{-1}$, respectively.

  • To investigate the preservability of Tongil, three types(rough, brown and milled rice) of Tongil and the common variety (being composed of typical varieties) in Korea were stored at a ambient and a low temperature $(15^{\circ}C)$ warehouse from April to October of each year for three years (1972-1974). The results obtained are described as follows; 1) Temperatures of atmosphere and the natural temperature warehouse changed in the same way. 2) Similar changes of relative humidity were observed in atmosphere and both warehouses. 3) Equilibrium moisture content of Tongil at $25^{\circ}C$ was 0.55 % lower in rough and brown rice. 0.33% lower in milled rice than each type of the common variety. 4) Weight loss rate in the natural temperature storage and in the low temperature storage was 1.35% and 0.74% after 6 month storage. 5) The change of fat acidity in browe rice was greater than any others (rough and milled rice). 6) Hardness of Tongil was 1.64kg higher than that of the common variety. 7) Germination rate was about the same during the low temperature storage, but that of brown of the natural temperature storage was abruptly decreased to $23%{\sim}37%$ after August. As a result, it is possible Tongil is applicable to the long-term storage of rice due to Tongil's superior preservability.

  • This study was carried out to examine seed germination, seedling growth, and biomass production of Eucommia ulmoides. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Cold moist stratification at a refrigerator showed 60.3% of seed germination, which is the most effective among pretreatment methods. 2. In case of 1-0 seedlings, sixty seedlings per $1m^2$ was the most appropriate density, and the growth quality of seedlings differed significantly among densities. 3. Height growth showed continuous growth pattern and the maximum growth was shown during the period 21 June to 20 July, which corresponds 32.7% of total annual growth. 4. As tree age and DBH increased, the production of bark and leaf increased, however, its increment rate remarkably dropped down after ten years. 5. When tree age was ten years, the rate of bark volume showed the maximum value, 12.42%. 6. Dry weight of barks and leaves and bark volume were positively related to the growth of DBH and height. 7. As tree age increased, leaf area decreased, but the number of leaves increased.
