  • Recently, it is increased the use of High-Strength Light-Weight Concrete(HLC) in the high-rise buildings and mega-structures. But there are a few research on the bond behavior of HLC, so it need to study about that. The present study was performed to investigate the bond characteristics of HLC. Major test variables include concrete compressive strength(f'c), concrete cover(c), bond length (${\ell}_{db}$), and bar diameter($d_b$). Test results indicate that the bond stress of HLC is increased with the increment of $\sqrt{f'_c}$ and concrete cover, bond stress is decreased with increment of bond length and bar diameter. And the final failure mode such as splitting or pullout failure is significantly affected by the concrete cover to bar diameter ratios(C/$d_b$). Test results were compared with ACI code and other proposed equations. The bond stress of HLC is higher than that of normal-strength normal-weight concrete, but lower than that of high-strength normal-weight concrte. Considering the present test results, modification factor(${\lambda}$= 1.3) of bond length in ACI 318-95 code for light-weight concrete is may have to be reviewed to apply to HLC.

  • Philippine bananas were ripened at various temperatures(18$^{\circ}C$, 21$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$) for 5 days and stored at 13$^{\circ}C$ and ambient temperature(13-20$^{\circ}C$) for 16 days. Their quality changes were evaluated during the storage. The color chart number and soluble solids of bananas before storage showed 4.2-5.2 and 18.7-18.8$^{\circ}$ Bx at 18$^{\circ}C$ and 21$^{\circ}C$ ripening and 5.5 and 20.1 $^{\circ}$Bx at 25$^{\circ}C$ ripening, respectively. Weight losses reached about 1% around 10 days in all storage conditions. Soluble solids increased initially for 4-6 days and then decreased slightly. Color chart number changed from 4.2-5.5 after ripening to 7 after 2-4 days storage. Blackening of 18$^{\circ}C$ and 21$^{\circ}C$ ripened bananas occurred after 4 days storage at 13$^{\circ}C$ and after 2 days storage at ambient temperature. Decay of 18$^{\circ}C$ and 21$^{\circ}C$ ripening bananas increased from 2.1% after 6 days at 13$^{\circ}C$ storage and 4.2% after 4 days at ambient temperature storage to 75-100% within 2-4 days after that times. The decay of 25$^{\circ}C$ ripened bananas rapidly increased after 2 days at 13$^{\circ}C$ storage and at the initial at ambient temperature storage.

  • This study was conducted to improve the storability of onion bulbs by loading method under room temperature and to reduce the rot caused by field open storage. Allium cepa cv. Changnyungdeago, late strain, was used for the test at the storage condition of 1-row-6-stairs, 2-rows-6-stairs, 4-rows-6-stairs, 1-rows-8-stairs, 2-rows-8-stairs, and 4-rows-8-stairs. The results obtained art as follows: The mean temperature was maintained lowly 1.6∼3.2$\^{C}$ in 1-row-6-stairs and 1.3∼2.6$\^{C}$ in 2-rows-6-stairs in contrast to 4-rows-8-stairs and the relative humidity was high when loading rows increased. The rotting rates in 1-row-6-stairs, 2-rows-6-stairs, 4-rows-6-stairs, 1-rows-8-stairs, 2-rows-8-stairs, and 4-rows-8-stairs were 11.4%, 11.6%, 12.4%, 14.6%, 13.9% and 16.6%, respectively, and became higher with increased rows and stairs of loading. Total weight loss of onion bulbs were l2.2%, 12.7%, 13.8%, 15.5%, 15.2% and 18.0% in 1-row-6-stairs, 2-rows-6-stairs, 4-rows-6-stairs, 1-row-8-stairs, 2-rows-8-stairs, and 4-rows-8-stairs, respectively. The rot of onion bulbs was caused mainly by Fusarium sp., Aspergilus sp., Botrytis sp., and bacteria.

  • This study was conducted to compare development of browning in minimally processed mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus Sing.) by picking season and postharvest holding time of the raw material. 'White' type of the mushrooms were harvested and minimally processed immediately after harvest or holding at 2$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days after picking in 4 seasons. The processed mushrooms were kept at 5$^{\circ}C$, and changes in surface color and content of total phenolic compounds of the mushrooms were measured. Respiration rate of the whole mushrooms was ranged from 9.55 to 17.93 mL C0$_{2}$/kg$\cdot$ hr, and the rate was low in mushrooms harvested in summer and autumn compared with those picked in spring and winter. Hunter L value of the mushrooms decreased rapidly just after slicing, especially in summer-harvest mushrooms. The mushrooms processed with the raw materials stored at 2$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days after harvest showed the lowest 'L' value among the sliced mushrooms prepared at different holding time. Consequently, summer-harvest mushrooms and the mushrooms kept at 2$^{\circ}C$ for more than 7 days after harvest would be unsuitable for minimally processing due to rapid browning.

  • The effects of single cells of carrot or radish on the fecal excretion, mineral absorption rate and structure of small intestine and colon were investigated in rats fed 5% single cell diet for 4 weeks. Carrot contained 28.76% of total dietary fiber and 21.45% of insoluble dietary fiber, and radish contained 23.14% of total dietary fiber and 16.77% of insoluble dietary fiber on a dry weight basis. Total dietary fiber contents of the single cell were 44.68% for carrot, 48.0% for radish. Absorption rates of magnesium were higher in the carrot and radish single cell groups than the other groups. Cellulose significantly increased fecal weight and weight of small intestine. The consumption of cellulose and single cells decreased digestibility of lipid. The length of colon were longer in the carrot and the radish group than the other groups. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that small intestine microvilli with leaf-shaped were seen in cellulose and single cell fed groups. These results suggest that the diet containing 5% single cells of carrot or radish increases the digestibility of dietary fiber, weight gain, and fecal output and shorten the gastrointestinal transit time.

  • The effects of $SO_2$ treated pads ($SO_2$ 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg) on the quality of dried persimmons slices were investigated. The $SO_2$ treated pads for storage did not affect to weight, moisture loss rate, and soluble solid contents of dried persimmons slices. The color change after storage for 12 weeks was the highest (value = 3.5) in control ($SO_2$ 0 g/kg), whereas that was the lowest (value = 2.0) under $SO_2$ 2 g/kg condition. When we measured the browning degree after 12 weeks, they showed O.D. 0.24, 0.22, 0.20, and 1.7 in serial dilution treated pads with $SO_2$ 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg, respectively. The decaying rate was the highest (7.0%) in control after 12 weeks storage, whereas it did not show any spoilage in $SO_2$ 1 g/kg and 2 g/kg treated condition for whole storage period. The concentration of residual $SO_2$ in dried persimmons slices was detected within a safe range of 20.3~40.3 ppm. Therefore, the shelf-life of dried persimmons slices was lengthened in $SO_2$ treated pads (especially in $SO_2$ 2 g/kg) for inhibiting of browning and decaying.

  • Si/C/CNF composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were examined to improve the capacity and cycle performance. Si/C/CNF composites were prepared by the fabrication process including the synthesis and magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling and the carbonization of phenol resin with CNF and HCl etching. Prepared Si/C/CNF composites were then analysed by BET, XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. Among SBA-15 samples synthesized at reaction temperatures between 50 and $70^{\circ}C$, the SBA-15 at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the largest specific surface area. Also the electrochemical performances of Si/C/CNF composites as an anode electrode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The coin cell using Si/C/CNF composites (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) showed better capacity (1,947 mAh/g) than that of other composition coin cells. The capacity retention ratio decreased from 84% (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) to 77% (Si : CNF = 89 : 11 in weight). It was found that the Si/C/CNF composite electrode shows an improved cycling performance and electric conductivity.

  • Yellow-hearted pine (YHP; Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki) is one of the Red pine species and has extremely narrow growth ring and high ratio of heartwood growing in Korea. It has been used for valuable wooden constructions as palace and temple for royal family since the Joseon Dynasty period. However, scientific information on the wood properties of YHP is still very lacking. This study was carried out to investigate natural durability of YHP to fungi and termites attack. Examination of anti-fungal and anti-termite properties of YHP was performed at indoor condition using brown-rot fungi (Fomitopsis palustris), white-rot fungi (Trametes versicolor), and termite (Reticulitermes speratus). The results showed that weight loss of the heartwood in YHP after fungi and termite test was much lower than those of the sapwood in YHP. Furthermore, the highest mortality of termite was obtained from the heartwood of YHP. Consequently, it is clearly revealed that the heartwood of YHP has excellent durability against brown- and white-rot fungi and termite.

  • Fluosilicic acid ($H_2SiF_6$) is recovered as aqueous solution which absorbs $SiF_4$ produced from the manufacturing of industrial-graded $H_3PO_4$ or HF. Generally, fluosilicate salts prepared by the reaction between $H_2SiF_6$ and metal salts. Addition of fluosilicate salts to cement endows odd properties through unique chemical reaction with the fresh and hardened cement. In this study, two-component fluosilicate salt based chemical admixtures (MZ) of $4\%,\;6\%$, and $8\%$ concentration were prepared by the reaction of $H_2SiF_6$ ($25\pm2\%$) and metal salts. The effect of concentration of MZ at a constant adding ratio on the hydration and watertightness of cement were investigated respectively. In a cement containing MZ, metal fluorides such as $CaF_2$ and soluble silica by hydrolysis were newly formed during hydration. The total porosity of the hardened cement was lower in the presence of U because of packing role of metal fluoride and pozzolanic reaction of soluble $SiO_2$. Consequently, the watertightness of the hardened paste containing MZ was more improved than non-added (plain) due to an odd hydration between cement and MZ.

  • The study was conducted to obtain some basic information to establish the system of performance-tests and selection of honeybee queens(Apis mellifera) under Korean circumstances, Colony performances were tested with thirty colonies of Apis mellifera at two apiaries in Taegu, Korea from September, 1988 to August 1989. The results of performance-testing on the colonies are summarized as follows : The colony weight measured before wintering was averaged $23.6{\pm}1.90kg$ and the colony weight was decreased by $2.9{\pm}0.82kg$ in average during winter season. Thirteen colonies were entered in two story hive from thirty single box colonies from April 17 to May 5, 1989 with increase of bee population and, consequently, the ability of enter-supers of the colonies apperared to be low. The ability of collecting pollen was measured to be $14.8{\pm}2.15gr$ per colony during 24 hours in April, and the number of swarm cells was counted $12.5{\pm}3.43$ cells per colony in aveage. Tendency to use propolis appeared to be moderate, and the number of returning foragers for a minute per colony was counted $108.7{\pm}18.31$ bees in average. Brood area was measured $2,464{\pm}628,67cm^2$ per colony in the post nectar flow season of acasia, and 30.8 percent of the colonies appeared to be infected with chalkbrood disease, The amount of honey production was $14.9{\pm}8.49kg$ per colony, which was harvested two times during the main nectar flow season of acasia.
