  • This study is a qualitative case study of 5 substance abusers recovered from drug addiction. It is useful socially and practically to understand about the rehabilitation and its process of recovering from drug addiction. Since this study deals with very private and sensitive issues, qualitative research approach is suitable. Data were collected through one to one in-depth interviews, and were analyzed by using analysis within/cross cases suggested by Creswell(2007). 5 individual cases were presented including substance addicts experiences and recovery process through within-cases analysis. Based on the within-cases analysis, common themes were presented through cross-cases analysis. Total 19 themes, related with recovery from substance addicts, were derived from the five individual cases, and 4 common themes were classified. These 4 common themes were first, recovery of sense of reality, second, taking self-existing pattern, third, self reconstruction in the context of social network, fourth, self-love. Based on the study results and discussions, practical implications were suggested to help persons claiming recovery from substance addicts for their recovery and rehabilitation.

  • This study investigates the relationships between smartphone addiction, stress and resilience in university students. A total of 241 students attending a four-year university in South Jeolla Province participated in this research. Data was collected from July 6 until August 31, 2017. The results of this study showed a positive correlation between smartphone addiction and stress (r=.37, p<.001), as well as a negative correlation between smartphone addiction and resilience (r=-.32, p<.001) and a negative correlation between smartphone addiction and the ability of interpersonal relations (r=.-21, p=.001). The variables for smartphone addiction where "academic problems" (${\beta}=.15$, p=.047) and "the ability of interpersonal relations" (${\beta}=-.21$, p=.007), with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 22.1%. Therefore, there is a need to develop a systematic approach to prevent smartphone addiction in university students.

  • The purpose of this study is to specifically investigate the factors that affect maintenance, relapse, and recovery after the abstinence of female drug addicts. For such purpose, ten females who repeated drug addiction and are currently in recovery were selected as the study participants to carry out in-depth interviews. The original materials were analyzed using descriptive phenomenological methods of Giorgi. The results of the analysis showed that most participants experienced discrimination and inhospitable treatment in their childhood. They began taking drugs as an escape from their difficult realities or out of curiosity and worked at adult entertainment establishments, living as a drug addict for a long time. Drugs gave them extreme sexual pleasure and it was difficult for them to recover as their body became dependent on drugs. However, as they experienced religious awakening or existential existence, they gained an opportunity for newly understanding themselves. Social support was an essential resource for their recovery. However, various kinds of trauma that they experienced in their lives acted as a factor to worsen drug addiction. Based on the study results, this study proposes spirituality, actual programs, and trauma treatment approaches that can contribute to the restructuring of life.

  • This study is to examine how a person's sense is changing in the process of gambling addiction and recovery. For this purpose, the ten of gambling abstinences were purposefully selected for intensive depth interviews. The data collected by thess interviews were analysed by Giorgi's(1970; 1985) phenomenological method. Meaningful units were categorized into 18 'emerging themes', and integrated by the total of 6 'essential themes' considering the interrelations of the emerging themes. Major findings of the study are as follows. Firstly, participants of this study lost their general senses in the addiction process by focusing on specific senses such as seeing and hearing. Secondly, participants have begun to regain the lost senses in the process of recovery, even though going through the 'pains of withdrawal'. Thirdly, the participants' experiences of recovery could be summarized as 'a recovery process of the general senses lost by gambling'. Based upon these findings, some suggestions for helping practice were proposed such as 'provision of informations about senses', 'program development of sense stimulation', and 'application of sense recovery training'.
